Re: Right now I'm reading

2/3rd's through Cormac McCarthy's "No Country for Old Men." I've seen the movie, which is so far a near-perfect translation of the book, and I hated the ending. But, this is a great book as far as I've gotten. Great characters, vivid descriptions. The story and writing feels tight, like nothing's wa...

Sangoma, here's a lengthy read on Knee Valgus (your knee collapsing inwards): https://bretcontreras.com/knee-valgus-valgus-collapse-glute-medius-strengthening-band-hip-abduction-exercises-and-ankle-dorsiflexion-drills/ From the link: Why is Knee Valgus Dangerous? Re: Of Pistols and BW Squats

Bram, your reference is completely off. Vagus misalignment they are talking about is an anatomical one, not "buckling in" during squat, let alone one legged. And it was on people from MOST study, those with knee osteoarthritis or at high risk of developing it, 50 - 79 years old. How about in the Br...

Friday, July 18th Rock Climbing 30 minutes Although climbing is not my cup of tea, I have a visiting 9 year old and my goal is to keep him somewhat tired. He probably climbed for an hour-and-a-half. Not too bad an experience, did one easy route up about 30/40 feet and some bouldering. Surfing 45 mi...

Stranger Things

For whatever reason, I've had no interest in this show, even as it's blown up in the media. I even struggled through the first episode a couple years ago and found it disposable. But, I watched it on Saturday of the past weekend and was immediately hooked. So far, knocked out the first 5 episodes. T...

Re: Of Pistols and BW Squats

In regards to the two rules above - I think BW squat as low as possible is beneficial. And the actual technique is not as important with BW as when loaded. Don't know if you read what I wrote correctly. The advice was only in regards to pistols - not 2-legged squats. Now the PT might treat the same...

Re: Of Pistols and BW Squats

The PT at my gym works with a number of NFL athletes and uses pistols as part of their knee rehab, and for knee rehab with the general population. He only has 2 rules from what I can tell: 1) Don't go below 90 degrees - he usually uses a plyo box, which they sit back and on to, then come back up fro...

Thursday, July 11th Busy day, and by the time I exited work the surf had gone away. Re: Working Out, Surfing and Meditating

Tuesday, July 9th Went for a surf on my lunch break. Surfed a spot about 1/2 mile to the South of me, my friend Bobby came to meet up, but balked due to the big number of surfers out. But me and my new co-worker's husband paddled out into the crowd. I got a couple waves right off the bat, but then ...

Re: Working Out, Surfing and Meditating

Bram, have you tried paddleboarding? It's such a change in perspective to go from laying or sitting on a board (or kayak) watching the waves roll in, and standing up watching them roll in. And fun to paddle out through the waves, or at least trying to. I'm jealous that you can hit the water every d...

Monday, July 8th Surfing 1.5 hours Looked okay, but it was way better once I made it out. Got some great waves! Shortened my surfing mantra (what I focus on) from 23 things down to 5. Felt like I surfed perhaps a bit better with less shit to think about. Super good time out there regardless. I don'...

Sunday, July 7th: Full-Body Figured if I'm still surfing like a goof after the insanely long workouts I've been doing (~50 sets), then I might as well not do them lol Looked through my log from 2010-2012, looking for patterns (thanks Irongarmx.net for storing all those workouts). Came up with about...

Re: 2019 Goals?

I know I posted no more drunk driving or video games (no dui's or crashes, no games for a couple months) in the other thread. We're at the half-way mark though, so maybe a couple more would work. I'd like to get my first tube surfing. I'm at 19 years of surfing and zero of them. That said I want to ...
