My tech money is going to Taiwan or South Korea. I have full buy in on this from the Mrs. as well, even if it costs extra.

Re: China is the Enemy

China claims they only have a few dozen cases a day now. I am extremely dubious. Curious that the news outlets are loathe to admit that the CCP might not be absolutely trustworthy.

Re: N-95 Masks from Dragon Door

Maybe not... the safe/lock culture is different these days. None of my older relatives ever locked up any gun but I and all the not-olds I know do. Plus cheap handgun lock boxes are are like $25, as well as all new guns ship with a lock anyway.

Re the end of Alfred's post: I have read that there is a massive gun buying spree going on right now. Shop owners are saying that it isn't hoarders but is fueled primarily by first-time buyers.

Thompson has said he views studio takes as "slightly dead" versions of songs. He's a fantastic live performer, I see him every few years when he hits Virginia.

Yeah, Trump is sending angry tweets to GM and Ford today when he could literally order them to make ventilators. He's fucking this up terribly. https://www.cnbc.com/2020/03/27/trump-orders-general-motors-to-make-ventilators-under-defense-production-act.html President Donald Trump has ordered Genera...

Classes are cancelled or online, but the university daycare is still running here, so I can still come into the lab some, but I really expect a closure soon. Preschoolers are just too effective a vector.

I am hitting the age where the musicians making music when I was a kid getting driven around by my mom are dying now. I swear it makes me feel older than birthdays do.

Wow, the NBA player take on china continues to dazzle. I never thought our sportsball players would piss away their credibility quite this fast. Next time Lebron protests a cop killing somebody send him $5 cause that appears to be his per capita rate to shut up about injustice.

Re: China is the Enemy

My wife and I dicussed China the other day. I was a bit surprised to see I did not have to spend any effort persuading her; she had already decided we will not use any app the Chinese govt touches and to avoid electronic devices made in china as much as possible. Her employer is very security consci...

Re: China is the Enemy

I'm starting to think punishing tariffs that cause our buying to shift to other than China might be worth the pain. China is not interested in joining the community of nations. It is interested in following the rules when it disadvantages you and breaking the rules when it advantages them.

It does illustrate one of the many ways in which electronic shit can never truly replace books. Nobody is going to leave little Dathan grandma's Chrome bookmarks in the will. The web is great at immortalizing things lots of people care about, but undependable if it matters to just a few. Like, it's...

They are useful, we do use the Milk Street Kitchen website (accessible with a magazine subscription) as it's about the only magazine I've seen that consistently has multiple recipes that look interesting every issue. Every Milk Street recipe I've tried has been RIDICULOUSLY over-seasoned and over-s...

Jacques Pepin has tons of great videos on YouTube for freeeeeeeee.
Yes, and he's very watchable. Those months I was pouring dinner into a tube in my stomach I would watch him every day on PBS and imagine eating food again one day.
But I still like to have books.

New Complete Techniques? You would not go wrong with that either, what i have is Essential Pepin. 700 recipes plus a DVD of demonstrated techniques. I will probably buy the other too, though i expect some duplication, just because they have been out long enough to be available quite cheaply now.

My claim to fame is I used to play capoeira in the park with Tulsi. I've actually kicked her ass several times.
I'll state with no shame that as a karateka, I respect the work ethic of anyone who really practices Capoeira. That shit is a workout.

Jaques Pepin has an encyclopedic book of techniques/dishes you might want to check out, as well multiple straight cookbooks. I very much like his approach to food.

Don't forget the movement to ban kitchen knives with points as well. Evildoers will just give up faced with the task of finding a file or a flat patch of concrete, or sandpaper. That's why there are no weapons in prisons.

I don't see trump agreeing to send any transcript this fast unless it's not going to help the Dems. One thing you have to admit is he usually has no problem just denying anything no matter what anyone else says.

Schlegal, you're absolutely right. My new knives arrived the other day. What a pleasure to dice onions, chop carrots etc. I used to avoid cooking dinners that involved a lot of knife skills. Funny you should mention Austro-Hungarians... I used to cook alongside a Hapsburg. The son of one of the ex patriate arch dukes. We went to college together and worked part-time in the same kitchen. That reminds me, I love a good goulash but have not made one in a while. When my dad was younger and ...
