Re: Back to KBs

I *loved* yesterday's "swings then a low-rep barbell lift" set-up, and I was all psyched up to do swings + heavy-ish squats today. But when I woke, I could feel a little stiffness returning to that spot on my back after yesterday's 40kg swings, so I changed plan and did the Cosgrove-via-DJ "complexe...

Re: Back to KBs

Back felt ready to go back to swings today, but I'm too bored with S&S to go right back to that right away. So for today here's what I did: SW 40kg, 10/10 alternating with BP 205, 123/3 My grip was better today, but I hate the thick handles. My form can change over the course of a set as my fingers ...

Re: Back to KBs

Yesterday my back felt ready for light work, so I did this complex with an empty bar: whip snatch x8 back squat x8 press/push-press x8 good morning x8 bent row x8 --Six complexes, about 15 seconds between That was fine. Fatigued my shoulders but nothing else. This morning I did the following Javorek...

Re: Back to KBs

My T spine area has been stiff the last few days, right about where a line drawn between the lower part of the lats crosses the spine. And then today's swings were going great (all with the 40kg this time), but on rep 99 that spot in my back said, "Yow." So I cut it off there, skipped the get-ups an...

Re: Back to KBs

Fat loss is on the move again. Maybe it's returning to daily S&S, without the confounding factor of last week's random bodybuilding. Or maybe it's the minor dietary tweaks: I reduced lunch from low-carb to no-carb and, at dinner, replaced the fresh and dried fruit with about a quarter pound of meat ...

Re: Back to KBs

On Monday did DL (5-3-2 topping out at easy 355 double) and medium-grip BP (3x10, topping out at lame 175x10, x7). Rested a day and then got back into S&S. Knowing it wasn't a great idea, I jumped into using the 40kg for all sets. And that's how I tore a callous and ended up sore enough to take anot...

Re: Back to KBs

Yesterday I started that little Dan John break with simple barbell work: full SQ, no belt: 135, 10; 165, 10; 195, 10 MP 65, 10; 85, 10; 90, 8 chins 4, 6, 7, 7 plate rows, 2 sets Today, more Simple & Sinister. When I finished reading Intervention today, I felt really bummed that it was over, like wat...

Re: Back to KBs

I am Simple. I had a 1:1 work:rest ratio in 32kg swings today (one set of swings takes me 20 seconds), and of course I got there with 32kg TGUs weeks ago. I'll settle in for a few days before I add in 40kg swings. The grip issue will be formidable at first. Whereas my other bells are competition siz...

Re: Back to KBs

Sunday progress check: -S&S swings are down to one inhale between sets today. That took effort. I'll note the time next session. I guestimate 06:30. -40kg in the TGU is breaking in fine. -Willingness to train (well, to train S&S) medium. My sleep hasn't been perfect and my lats have worked real hard...

Re: Back to KBs

Back to normal today. Swings with 32kg and TGUs with 40kg. On the swings, I'm down to just one inhale between sets until the 8th set. After that I need two inhales. (Mind you, just one breath cycle can easily take 20 seconds, even when my heart is racing. Going from that one inhale down to 15 second...

Re: Back to KBs

After a month of waiting, the 40kg came today. So to celebrate, and because I may decide to do the TSC in a couple weeks, I did something different and Dan John-ly in place of swings. Five series: semi-sumo DL 225*5 + SW 40kg*5 + pullups*3+rest 30sec. TGUs: 40kg, 36kg, 36, 36, 36 The series gave me ...

Simple & Sinister: Loving KBs again

Background: I did KBs consistently from 2000 to 2008. Then I moved into a house, bought a rack, and started PLing for five and a half years: Faleev, 5/3/1 (which made me huge but not stronger), RTS (worked great but demanded more than I was willing to keep giving), and Rogozhnikov. In that last year...

Cast Iron KBs vs. competition-sized bells

I'm looking for a 40kg bell. Since I won't use it for GS, I'm tempted to cheap out and get a "Cast Iron" one instead of the competition size. Can anyone with experience weigh in? (E.g. is the handle of the Cast Iron unmanageable thick?)

Gold. http://www.strongfirst.com/topic/smolov-cycle-with-ss/

Dude: "I just started Smolov. I am going to add 130# to my squat in six weeks. And I'm going to add S&S. But don't worry, just twice a week. You know, for recovery."

Pavel: "Um, maybe just take a walk instead."

Re: Kettlebell Simple & Sinister

You'll run into issues far before you get into the 48s, what issues? I don't know, but something gay will pop up, it always does with these 'too simple' routines. It typically has to do with pattern overload and boredom If it happens, it will be elbow bursitis from the TGU for me. But if Allah will...

Re: Kettlebell Simple & Sinister

I needed to de-fat, and for me that means KBs. I agree that S&S is well worth $10 even if you've been doing cattleballs since the pre-RKC days. I can understand why some people are comparing it to ETK (which I hated), but this is a much more appealing book. First, the price. Second, I always liked t...

Re: The Rogozhnikov Experiment

Today was heavy squat/pull day. I've been weaning myself off caffeine and this is a low-energy day.

Low box SQ in powerpants with all the chain I have (which is only 30# or 35# total): 275, [email protected]+; 325, [email protected]; 315, [email protected]

Conv. DL from below knee, no belt 315, [email protected], [email protected]

'Nuff said.

Re: The Rogozhnikov Experiment

On to the second cycle. Because of my travel schedule, this will have to be a H-L-M-L cycle. Today was heavy bench day. I did board presses (3.5") in a loose, open-backed single-ply Inzer denim shirt. It's so loose that at that board height it may not give me anything at all. Today's numbers were: 2...

The Rogozhnikov Experiment

Now that I’ve figured out how Konstantin Rogozhnikov’s “WPC Russia” system is really supposed to work, I’m starting a fresh log. In mid-March my meet lifts were 200kg, 135kg, 205kg at 79kg bodyweight. It was my maiden voyage in gear. My competition cycle was rough because I followed the one given in...

End of road for foot wraps in Russian military

In the original (and awesome) RKC book, Pavel mentioned these things. http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/shortcuts/2013/jan/16/russian-soldiers-replacing-foot-wraps-socks They've seen service in the Seven Years war, the Napoleonic wars, the Crimean war and two world wars – in fact, in every war the Rus...

Mar. 6: Heavy bench This was an incredible goat-fuck. I held up this last heavy workout til the shirt finally came today: an Inzer basic denim (one ply). I've heard of people not even getting to their raw max their first time in a shirt, but I got stapled by 245. Using Tuscherer's technique I got t...

Re: Geared and Confused

Feb. 23: Heavy SQ/DL Rogozhnikov tells you to do a gym max in the squat and go pretty easy on the deads today (60% for 6/3). Bwt today is 175, inadvertently down three and a half pounds from five weeks ago, through a combination of cleaner eating and (I'd guess) the reduced volume. suited SQ 335, 1...
