Re: Mr. Money Moustache/Early Retirement
This is a subject that is fast becoming near and dear to my heart. I am in my early to mid 30s and made the mistake of buying into the hype of a four-year degree, despite the need to take out loans to do so. I made it out with less than some, but still with enough that it will certainly hang over my...

Z-pak, meh. But that is so simple to get that it's pointless to do so. Anything else, screw that.

Re: How to spot when your life has decayed
I buy Community brand coffee, pre-ground, pour it into the reusable plastic k cup, pop that fucker into the Keurig, and BOOM, about a minute later I have a cup of relatively good tasting coffee. Best part is, it's impossible for me to fuck it up at five o'clock in the morning when I get out of bed....

Re: 2015-16 Chevy Colorado/GMC Canyon - anyone got one?
New Nissan Titan will be sized btwn a half ton and a 3/4 ton. That's all I know about them, but Titans altogether haven't been stellar trucks. I'm happy with my Ford F-150, but it is a beast. Also, it'll do 0 to 60 in 6 seconds with the dual turbo 6. Really? I've heard good things about them. Gas m...

I like the design, but you will be surprised how fast you run out of room. Mine is a lot older so Things have changed. That being said, I have a 2004 Colorado with 150k miles and it is doing well, apart from so horrid electrical issues including the dreaded Chevy passlock design. My biggest issue is...

Re: Not too early to call it....
As a current firefighter/paramedic, if you break down my salary to hourly I make a paltry $10/hr straight time for 120 hrs in 2 weeks. If you break it so it represents OT, the hourly wage goes down further. I am in the south so wages aren't great, but I am in the 2nd largest metro area in the state...

Re: Not too early to call it....
Fuckers can manage a McDonald's in less than 4 years without any formal education and make more money than most cops or firefighters with triple that level of experience. Average salary, according to BLS, for a patrol officer is $53,000. And, as a former Police yourself, you know that is before the...

So far I'm digging it. The choreography is pretty great and the story line is getting better. Characterization is slow, but happening. Also just to clarify, the reason for no guns isn't that they didn't know how, but that they were outlawed a long time ago.

Re: Decided to try for PA or NP program--in the military
No doubt that good opportunities are on the horizon. Here's hoping. Coming back from active duty status to the fire department was definitely a kick in the jimmy, both in terms of money and peace of mind. I had half a mind to say fuck it and shoot for an active slot or make an attempt to swap civie...

Re: It's Swim season again
Just listened to an interesting podcast with Raph Ruiz about working S&C stuff with the US Olympic Swim team. "Infantile" is what he called the current state of swimming S&C in the US. While my own views are a bit limited, I think that describes a lot of S&C for various sports...

I admire your assertive drive and hope this all works out. Using your brain and not your back is just plain smart. Use your back for stupid human tricks like martial arts, GS, etc. ;-) Thanks Tom. Believe me, I would love to stop reaching and just work and come home but with what we make at the FD,...

Re: Decided to try for PA program--in the military
Update for those who care: Made it through basic and tech school. Still working at the FD, though I'm currently waiting to hear back from the ER on a possible FT position. I've also tossed my resume in for a flight medic spot in north Atlanta, though I doubt I will get that. If I can get my unit and...

Re: Anybody hear about the school shooting in Oregon yesterday?
This level of violence is a pretty big deal and more so if it comes out of nowhere vs. say, responding to a 911 call as a trained cop with a partner or back up on the way. Bingo. I've tried to illustrate this point to some of the guys in my varied circles and they seem to think it's gonna be like t...

Re: Building a cabin from scratch
Dunn, I know you're a woodworker and I admire that like crazy. My kids are nine and six and when I taught them to simply whittle this past summer, they totally ate it up and still do it. I can't and won't fight Mindcraft, Pokiemon, et al, because it's simply unfair to them. What I can do, however, ...

Re: Building a cabin from scratch
This stuff, primitive skills, are a fun hobby. This becomes abundantly more true when you have a kid to help and teach. Back when I was much more a gypsy than I am now, I spent about 8 months living in primitive shelters and occasionally my truck, albeit nothing this grand. It was an interesting tim...

Doctor Who Season 9: Spoilers
I hear a lot of folks disliked the first episode. Lots of shit happened. I don't buy that the girls are dead, despite Clara leaving the show soon. Digging how they just jumped right in with this season. The wife isn't digging Capaldi as the Doc. I think that while there has been a sense of "oth...

As some of you know, we are expecting our son in October. While I am strangely not nervous about it, I am curious as to what nugget worthy stuff you wish you had known when you were in my shoes. It can pertain to the kid or to my wife and I. Hey, congrats. Mine is almost 8 weeks old, and my brother...
