My guess is he didn't really want extra waves, he just wanted to be recognized as a good surfer.
He never got that feeling when I shouted at him, or ignored him, or let him have every wave.
But he did when I genuinely told him things like, "That was a killer turn!"

Alzheimer's protection Dr. Peter Attia
After going through it yourself, you chose not to hit your kids. That’s admirable you broke the cycle! That behavior might have gone back thousands of years. And you taught them to exercise and meditate. I’d imagine they were the first generation to learn that in your family tree from their parents....

Lenny, What a cool video your son made! And you have a lot to be proud of as a parent. Thank you for sharing! I think parents do the best they can. My grandfather beat my dad, stole all his money, and forced my grandma to have a number of abortions. My dad made his own mistakes, but he never repeate...

You wonder if that's where "so and so is a pain in the neck" etc. comes from. 100%. Haha, hope I don't know anyone who's a literal "pain in the ass." I don't have anything earth-shattering. It was just acknowledging times where I wanted distance from a person who might have been...

Gene, It’s hard to switch off my “friendly” setting. Because of that, I end up being a safe haven for a variety of good and bad energies. But you bring up a good point in mentioning focusing on what actual positives we can bring to the situation. Being friendly, then allowing ourselves to get trappe...

On the physical side of things that Luke brought up…. There’s someone in my social circle who’s an “endless complaint” energy vampire. When they get going, I get this intense neck pain. It’s like someone’s digging a rod in between my vertebrae and moving it around. I mentioned it to someone who know...

Never heard of that!
Anything worth sharing on boundaries you’ve set?

And I love the idea of unreachable goals. Haven’t heard it worded that way before.

Turd,
If someone is genuinely enthusiastic to see me, I don’t go to that place. Which is ironic because it’s a repellant behavior. And I could see disinterest being a trigger for the vampires I know too.

I honestly think Bram is posting a lot of threads that are only about how enlightened Bram is. You dumb, flabby, gangrenous vagina, I literally pointed out how I suck at being a person in this thread and that I’m struggling with not being that way. Admitting it isn’t some sort of demented humble-br...

MJ&S,
This isn’t the first time you’ve acted rude when unprovoked, and I’m not the only person you’ve acted this way towards. This is how life works:
Act unpleasant, especially for no good reason.
And people don’t want to be around you.

Luke, I’ve noticed a correlation between my self-esteem and looking the other way with this stuff. At work and with family, my self-esteem is currently healthy and I set boundaries. In romantic relationships, with friends, and with strangers, it’s not as healthy and I’m much more likely to tolerate ...

Dealing with them…. Been avoiding spending time with them. Setting boundaries when I can’t avoid them. And focusing on standing tall (literally and figuratively) when those things don’t work. Dealing with myself…. My form is in rattling off shit I’m proud of. Shutting the fuck up more is as far as I...

Great documentary! This is about the death of the famed mountaineer Alex Lowe and his best friend coming along, a few months after his passing, marrying his wife, and raising his three kids. Heavy story, but well told. The director is the eldest son of Alex, the one with the strongest memories and c...

My point was that people are selective about who they criticize. If you were Republican-leaning I'd have said Trump or Bush. Same kind of evil perpetuated by them, same kind of selective blindness on the part of those who agree with them, or their speeches anyway. Libs are always calling out someon...

Let’s say me and someone are hanging out and they say “Look at those [insert discriminatory term].” I know from experience that if I don’t say anything, that poison seeps into my head. And that poison makes my life worse. Instead of being generally friendly towards that group (which is how I prefer ...

Small Mercies , by Dennis Lehane. It’s 1974 and Mary Pat Fennessy, who “looks like she came off a conveyor belt of tough Irish broads” is looking at forced desegregation for her one remaining child’s senior year. It’s set in South Boston — poor, tribal, racist, violent— and that culture plays a hug...

What were some of the things your kids learned that you were proud of? Teaching them about meditation and exercise is awesome :) Forgiveness is a weird one. It’s not about right or wrong or justice or fairness. It’s more like returning a library book you don’t want any more. “Nope, not gonna waste t...

Lenny, thanks for your honesty and openness! Yesterday, I listened to a podcast with Kai Lenny and he was saying he does an ice bath before bed due to the sleep benefits. You’ve probably tried something similar, but it’s a novel idea for me. Will give it a go (or at least a cold shower) this week. T...
