JRR Tolkien: Lord of the Rings- all of them and everything else that goes along. David Foster Wallace: Infinite Jest- twice, but no more, too long Mark Helperin: Winter's Tale- twice and a third in the next couple of years. Re: Kurosawa
I'd say why bother. Its probably all lost on the vapid self absorbed little bastards anyway. Just show the Kardashian tv show and be done with it. I wished this weren't as true as it ended up being. Time wise, we only crammed in Hidden Fortress and Seven Samurai and the first half of Ran. It's only...

How Do You Cook Your Turkey?
I'm not cooking on the day this year, but my Friendsgiving (more of WorkFriends(ish)giving, was a dry brined, spatchcocked (butterflied), smoked 14-16 lb bird. Gravy was a mustard, white wine, giblet gravy, more a sauce, technically I guess, since it wasn't made from drippings. Last years I did the ...

Pretty easy to sit back and say it's all bullshit when you're not affected... People I know, students I know, family have been targeted - sure, maybe the uptick is just coincidental. Maybe my family members living in the same neighborhood for over a decade should expect assholes to leave racist gra...

Here's a link to a full performance of the full album they did on NPR music:

It's a good one.
Saw them and The Hold Steady on their Rock N' Roll Isn't Dead tour eight or nine years ago. A great night.

His refusal to accept the election results and therefore the will of the people... [-X Depends on the results. No it doesn't. If at the end of the day the election is certified, it is by definition the will of the people. It's worked for 240 years, through multiple wars and some pretty nasty electi...

My Red Wing Heritage Iron Rangers look great, but I still haven't gotten them broken in yet. The sole is incredibly stiff. These ugly things are crazy comfy, and I'm happily married, so, whatever.

I'd bumped into these somewhere and finally ordered a pair of the Nine2Fives. They're some of the most comfortable work (teacher, shirt, tie, no jacket) shoes I've ever worn. Zero drop and big toe box, but pretty normal looking. http://www.lemsshoes.com/assets/images/IMG_5842.jpg Jesus fuck...what ...

What class is this for? Film? English? Creative Writing? Not to take away from this discussion or get off topic, but I was briefly an English teacher. Some of you are probably laughing at my grammar and spelling... If you are set on Kurosawa, that's cool. Kurosawa is awesome, but I am not an expert...

Bedside table includes: Springsteen's 'Born to Run'- 30 pgs in. Interesting thus far and I'm a big fan. Simon Winchester's 'Atlantic: Great Sea Battles, Heroic Discoveries, Titanic Storms, and a Vast Ocean of a Million Stories'- engaging and part of that interesting, though possibly increasingly cli...

My school's got a new 'creative' period and I thought I'd like to show some Kurosawa movies and their descendants to the kids. Any ideas from this august body? I only know a little and haven't seen any (we're supposed to be learning too...), so I'm open to any advice on structure. I mean, I certainl...

'1491' and '1493' are both great histories. The first is a rewriting of pre-Colombian indigenous populations (more people and complexity and here for far longer than previously thought. The second is a massive history of the consequences of the Colombian Exchange. Charles C. Mann is the author.

That was a staggeringly simplistic article. Tying in Ali, Islam, the Nation of Islam, Vietnam, race, sports, spectators, Ted Williams, World War II and more in a few hundred words is an exercise in oversimplification. The Atlantic had a nice piece explaining why the folks at Breitbart might struggle...
