I will never buy a locked phone again. Ever. You usually have to buy the phone right up front, which can be pricey, but you will save money by not being locked into a multi-year contract that subsidizes the cost of the phone. Make sure you get an unlocked phone, though. I learned the hard way when I kicked Sprint to the curb. Gave my wife my iPhone 4S (I'm using vanilla android on a Google Samsung Nexus and loving every minute of it) and had to become my own personal IT guy to get around Sprint's refusal to unlock a phone I bought outright. Had to purchase an interposer to make the phone workable with something other than Sprint because they will only unlock for international use. The interposer bypasses the lock and allows my phone to use the GSM band instead of CDMA and it works great.

Like I said, whatever you do, just don't go with a locked phone or get tied down to a contract. You will have many more options and a much better general experience.

How's the coverage with this set up? My phone drops calls all the time and can't get a wifi signal to save my life. It's almost pointless to have a smartphone because it's so difficult to get a wifi signal.

Pre-smartphone, I used straight talk for a couple of years and the service was excellent. They actually use Verizon's network. I don't have any experience with their wifi though.
If you buy an ATT iPhone from the Apple store and just get the phone without a contract, ATT will unlock it for you. Apparently they do it all the time for Europeans who are in New York to shop.
