According to the Dept. of Education, 3.3 million students are expected to graduate high school in 2013-14.

The idea of mandatory public service is nice in theory, but seriously, good luck finding something useful for 3.3 million 18 year-olds to do. The last public works project on that scale (wars aside) was the WPA during the Second New Deal, and I seem to recall that many people on the Right side of the spectrum found that somewhat wasteful.

I don't agree with any sort of draft per se but mandatory Public service of some form is far from a bad Idea.

No draft about it. All is Voluntary. That is the point. you willingly take a step above or 10 from just paying taxes and obeying the law, you put yourself on the spot to serve your community, your state and your nation. I do not wish for Sparta, in fact all might be surised that I hate the idea of Sparta beyond admiration for ability and tougness, but their system sucked ass. Not everyone should be a soldier, that is actually what brought them low.

But it is common for an active soldier to be liable to some reserve status and liable to be called back up if things go to Hell and trained men are needed in a war that really matters for our survival, like WW2.

But that is why its the fastest way to get the right to vote and hold office. They put their lives on the line and can be called back.I would not use the Heinline definition of Civilian and Citizen just citizen and Franchised citizen, and yes I know that sounds redundant but even I will give in a little to perception is reality.

Emergency services are next because they too risk their lives. (And IMO a Firefighter is right there with a soldier. I wanted to risk my life in the act of fighting and killing our enemies, I never really considered being a Firefighter, and don;t think I would be suitable for the job. (And astma probably is a worse thing to have for a fire-fighter than a trigger puller.

Peace Corps I give it up for, occassionaly they die doing that and it IMO is a noble thing and this will help shut up many of the hippies and Libs we did not kill in the Revolution to get a system like I'm talking.. ;-)

Federally designed standardized testing is always a valid solution.

2 Years Active Military service, 2 years Reserve (Regular 1 weekend a month, 2 weeks a year shit for the first year and then just have them come in for a weekend every other month. There will still be enough people who join the reserves or stay on.)

2 Years Peace Corps, 2 years assisting and training and administration of Peace Corps.

4 Years Emergency Services and Medical Services- EMT/Firefighters, Police, Nurses, Orderlys, Nursing Homes, ect down to mopping puke.

6 Year Educational services- Teachers, Councillors, ect.


8 Years Community Services- Trash collecting, Sanitation, ect.


Your child can earn it for you if they join the military, as you have made someone who is willing to stand the line. By this time many are decent, productive, and somewhat informed members of society.

Make a national law that Civics has to be taught for 2 weeks in grades 4,5 and 6. 4 weeks in grades 7,8 and 9th and 6 weeks in 10th,11th and 12.

Western civ, American History, same emphasis as Language Arts, math and Sciences.

As much as the standardized test was a bad idea, this has merit. Obviously, implementation would be problematic and inevitably screwed up by the gov't but some kind of civic duty, alongside mandatory coursework throughout school would be beneficial for everybody but those who benefit from a fragmented, misinformed populace.

In China, it has been proposed that if Chinese want to live in Beijing, they should need to pass some kind of exam. They said that they would consider your education level, your knowledge of civic affairs and your work experience. If you have a college degree and a steady job, you can remain but if you don't understand how the gov't and law works, they would kick you out.
