VERMILLION, S.D. >> A student organization at the University of South Dakota has been told that holding a “Hawaiian Day” party violates the school’s policy on inclusiveness.

So, the Student Bar Association has renamed its winter social event “Beach Day.” And even though the group is encouraging members to wear floral shirts, it won’t be distributing lei at the party.

Law school administrators advised the students not to distribute lei because using items of cultural significance might be viewed as inappropriate, according to the Argus Leader newspaper in Sioux Falls.

The administration advised the association to change the Hawaiian theme of the event based on a complaint by a student who expressed concern about the use of indigenous cultural symbols, according to Michelle Cwach, the university’s director of marketing communications.

Anybody who uses the English language is guilty of the high crime of cultural appropriation. The world belongs to the squat pissing fembois now. BTW, Hawaiians love it when people show a respectful appreciation or interest in Hawaiian culture.

On the contrary, in the context of the stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid idea that is "cultural appropriation" it makes perfect sense.

What is (lol) cultural appropriation? Why...

cul·tur·al ap·pro·pri·a·tion
Dictionary result for cultural appropriation
noun
noun: cultural appropriation; plural noun: cultural appropriations

The unacknowledged or inappropriate adoption of the customs, practices, ideas, etc. of one people or society by members of another society.

Now, are you English? Is the plaintiff? Am I? If it's wrong to use Hawaiian lei, words, traditions etc. when you aren't Hawaiian, then why isn't it wrong to use the English language, Anglo customs, costume, etc. The bottom line about all this grievance culture is that it is a one way street where the same standards could never be applied in both directions.

Ah, I thought you meant that English is a language that borrows a lot of words from the French and Spanish and Italian and German and Latin. We are appropriating all those cultures. Ipso facto. I think, to be truly sensitive, we should absolument stop appropriating words from other cultures. Capice tipo? Leben and lernen.

For no particular reason, the etymology of "fuck" came to mind... Germans say fuck freely, appropriation gone full circle.
Quote:
The Oxford English Dictionary states that the ultimate etymology is uncertain, but that the word is "probably cognate" with a number of Germanic words with meanings involving striking, rubbing and having sex or is derivative of the Old French word that meant "to fuck."

Germanic cognates
The word has probable cognates in other Germanic languages, such as German ficken (to fuck); Dutch fokken (to breed, to beget); dialectal Norwegian fukka (to copulate), and dialectal Swedish focka (to strike, to copulate) and fock (penis).[7] This points to a possible etymology where Common Germanic fuk- comes from an Indo-European root meaning "to strike", cognate with non-Germanic words such as Latin pugno "I fight" or pugnus "fist".[7] By application of Grimm's law, this hypothetical root has the form *pug–. There is a theory that fuck is most likely derived from Flemish, German, or Dutch roots, and is probably not derived from an Old English root.[8]

Latin and Greek cognates
There may be a kinship with the Latin futuere (futuo), a verb with almost exactly the same meaning as the English verb "to fuck". From fūtuere came French foutre, Catalan fotre, Italian fottere, Romanian futere, vulgar peninsular Spanish joder, Portuguese foder, and the obscure English equivalent to futter, coined by Richard Francis Burton. However, there is no clear past lineage or derivation for the Latin word. These roots, even if cognates, are not the original Indo-European word for to copulate, but Wayland Young argues that they derive from the Indo-European *bhu– or *bhug– ("be", "become"), or as causative "create" [see Young, 1964]. A possible intermediate might be a Latin 4th-declension verbal noun *fūtus, with possible meanings including "act of (pro)creating".

However, the connection to futuere has been disputed‍—‌Anatoly Liberman calls it a "coincidence" and writes that it is not likely to have been borrowed from the Low German precursors to fuck.[9]

Greek phyō (φύω) has various meanings, including (of a man) "to beget", or (of a woman), "to give birth to".[10] Its perfect pephyka (πέφυκα) can be likened[citation needed] to "fuck" and its equivalents in other Germanic languages.

All of which illustrates the basic point that the concept of cultural appropriation is colossally, willfully ignorant. What's the alternative? That we learning nothing from our encounters with other people and societies? Here's a decent defense of cultural appropriation:

Of course, in reality, it's just another stick to beat white people with. Nobody calls it cultural appropriation when a Mexican has a hamburger, or a black person straightens their hair, nor should they, but the unidirectionality of the accusations are plain to see.
