OK... back in theater, concert, touring rock shows.. there was roadbox of odds and ends called the, "Jizz Box" or "Gack Box". I didn't make it up. "Jizz" is like crap,.. excrement or by product. So the adaptation to years of pajama wrestling that gives aches and pains is "Jizz".
I'll call it compensations.

Yes compensations, but levels of compensations (and conflicts) that entangle deep into the physiology.

E.g. There's a fairly big BJJ comp here in Sydney on Saturday. My BJJ teacher (Gracie black belt from Brazil) came to my practice yesterday to get sorted out before he competes. Usual BJJ injury history with some other bits and pieces. He plays a fast game on the mats.

He just moved to competing in masters and likes it cause he gasses in adult (10 minute) comps. He is 'just' in masters age, super fit and strong by any usual metrics.

I ran him through some neuro tests and every time I loaded his proprioception, his breathing would change. Even when I added a pattern generater movement his system still crashed within 30 seconds.

This guy can do all the road work and training he wants, but until we disentangle the compensations and conflicts (maladaptation / jizz..), he will always gas in comps. Some peoples maladaptation might show as shoulder dyskinesia or weak legs or whatever. His was breathing, that's big, and he didn't even know it.

Back to original topic. I see how a balanced series of 'gymnastic' moves could help him. But I would view and apply the 'gymnastics' as 'ballistic yoga'.

That's Anthony Bourdain's wife in the videos. He did well for himself.

I think for the normal guy doing bjj/judo something like YRG, bioginestica/ginastica natural, or some of Maxwell's stuff will cover your strength based mobility, injury prevention, and the like. The idea of gymnastics and calisthenics training is very appealing, but I think it's like Shaf mentioned once, it's favors certain body types (and weights). I'm not saying you couldn't do some of this shit as a heavy or super-heavy, just that it wouldn't be an efficient path to strength training.

I think there is a huge difference training to actually be a gymnast and doing what most of us are talking about - which is simply the most basic of the attributes gymnasts enjoy. Strength is ways weights don't hit very well - greater shoulder stability - flexibility or mobility etc or what ever we want to call it. Being obviously a strength per pound thing - it may encourage a little weight loss along the way. If you don't go into it thinking you'll be doing an Iron Cross or the fancy stuff - it might be a good thing to play around with from time to time.

I used to Need the Foundation Training (not the Sommers GST Foundation, that other one) for my back - but doing the tuck levers and now following the basic GST Foundation Course 1 have eliminated that need.
Foe me it's been nice finding a strengthening practice the decreases rather than increases the need for rehab/prehab etc.

Gymnastics, like bicycling, has no place in an adult male's day.

Maybe stuff like this???

I have used exactly this movement as 'homework' for patients. Try googling "feldenkrais exercises" and play around with the ones that fit your goals. Feldenkrais, Alexander or Rolf, whatever, I always apply Bruce's "absorb what is useful..." rule.
It's less about throwing out bad apples and more about finding good ones and cutting worms out of them.
