Training with the Beast

Post by The Ginger Beard Man » Tue Oct 11, 2016 6:33 pm

About a month ago, I did a daylong seminar with Ed Hall. I'm looking over my notes, and I figured I'd post some of what I got that day.

General: First of all, he's a very cool guy. Humble, friendly, and funny. He started out as a swimmer at age 5, and at 13 was the top swimmer in his age group in England. By 15 he was burnt out and gave it up to lift.
His goal is to win the Worlds Strongest Man and retire. He figures he'll never have to work a regular job again, and he can get back down to a normal size. He knows he'll be dead in five to ten years at his current size.

Diet/Supplements: natural fats are the best way to fuel
- stay away from carbs and fruits
-he loves a full English and tea with coconut oil to start the day
-as long as you eat the good stuff, the bad stuff is ok
-when his wife makes a curry, she'll add an entire side of bacon
-he uses protein powder twice a day and BCAAs during a workout
-"obviously I can't get into the bad stuff"

Recovery: the most important aspect of training
-he's having a hyperbaric chamber built at his house
-R&R is very important for fucked up schedules, but never miss a session
-just keep kidding yourself

Training: trains six days a week, four barbell sessions, swims on Sunday's (sprints), and a "caveman" day of tire flips, carries, sleds, step ups etc
-"6 rep rule of thumb" for bench, squat, overhead press; pyramid up to a weight he can't get for six, then stay there til he gets it, then add 5-10%
-it takes two weeks to recover from a heavy deadlift session, so he alternates heavy and speed days
-if you don't feel right on heavy day, dospeed work instead
-log press on bench day, axle on shoulder day, yoke/squats, deadlift/atlas stones/farmers
-do events last, when you're tired
-on bench press: not benching is the most common mistake strongmen make
-hand width should be the same as on a press up
-on deadlift: "my sport allows straps, it would be stupid not to use them"
-pull double overhand until you can't, then use straps; never use a mixed grip "because biceps"
-the leg press is the most important deadlift accessory
-a deadlift is a leg press off the floor
-"a deadlift is a deadlift", he only pulls from the floor
-always leg press on squat day
-log press: if you can clean a log, you should be able to press it
- in theory you should log press 80% of incline press max
-attack atlas stones
-always use tacky; he likes to slap stones first, to get some tacky on them; in comp, he'll go down the line slapping all the stones before he lifts the first

Those are some interesting points, and some nice honesty too. Thanks for sharing!

This is great stuff. Been thinking about doing leg press on my dl day, actually.
In the mill, getting down.

I don't know shit about that sport except that it makes for great viewing at 3am on ESPN 8.

Is this a realistic expectation...what does the prize money, and endorsement revenue look like after winning this most anonymous of titles?

I don't know about WSM but Klokov has parlayed his 2008 Silver Medal into what appears to be a lucrative career travelling the world giving seminars where @fitters with a 52kg snatch pay $300 each to fill an @fit box shoulder-to-shoulder to watch him work out.

He said Laurence Shaleilei (spelling?) was the Englishman to win, 25 years ago. He hasn't had to hold a job since.

All those Anavar enhanced clits...I bet it's like getting stabbed in the pelvic bone with a Bic pen while you're trying not to look at her face.
