beet juice--endurance benefit?

Post by dead man walking » Fri May 05, 2017 5:18 pm

studies say nitrates are converted to nitrites who means you need less oxygen for the same amount of work (something like that). a 2-3% improvement in performance is possible.

has anyone tried this magic juice?

(no need to report on blood-colored stool that results, but hey, don't let me wreck your fun.)

Anecdotal, but just about every fast rider and decent triathlete that came into the bike shop was sporting a jar of beets a couple of years ago. They all swore by it. Only way I'll eat beets is grilled, so I don't know from personal experience.

Probably worth a couple minutes in a 10k just from placebo alone.

Hard to go for a long run if you're in danger of shitting your pants. At least that's what I've heard.

I had no GI issues using powder beets in a kind of preworkout drink.

I used Bulk Supplements beet powder and would take 2 tablespoons in water. There was a noticeable difference in stamina for cardio and circuit training type work.

thanks shaf

beet powder may be the way to address the sometimes-laxative action of real juice.

Shaf,
What sort of dosing protocols on the powdered stuff? Sam's Club had some when I was there last week. Never considered it, but I've got a very hard endurance wise event coming up in two weeks; I'm game for anything at this stage.

Thanks for your thoughts.

I heard about using beet juice for endurance benefits a couple of years ago but never used it long enough to tell. I think powdered may be the way to go as Shaf mentioned.

Yes, I would like to know of the dosing protocols, timing, etc., Shaf.

runners world had a basic article a few years back

http://www.runnersworld.com/sweat-scien ... h-and-when

one producer of powder (or crystals) is beet elite. i heard about them when i read about some crazed obstacle course racer they sponsor.

https://www.humann.com/products/beetelite/

i wouldn't be surprised if their stuff is expensive, but i have looked at or compared prices.

So, I used powdered beets, you commonly see beet juice crystals (in Beet Elite, etc). I used 2 tablespoons of powdered beet in a drink to get an effect. I am not sure on the dosage for products like Beet Elite..which I think is combined with cherry concentrate as well.

It is hard to find a definitive answer for how much nitrate is in powdered beet per unit.

RBSG...in your case I would probably go with a commercial preparation like Beet Elite, or whatever they have avalable at Sams, and try it 3-4 times before your competition to avoid any surprises...I know you are meticulous about this stuff. A guy your size may need to experiment with dosing as well.

1 cup of beet juice (sorry, I don't know the concentration) every day, starting 5-7 days before a big race (source: college runner I know)

My folks have an Amish run produce auction nearby- any reason you couldn't just slice dehydrate and blend? They're incredibly cheap. Superbeets, apparently a favorite of conservative talk radio hosts like Herman Cain, has a few other things in it. But if you want beets, buy beets I'd think.

Don't what effect dehydration has on fiber, though. Could get messy.

apparently cooking reduces the effectiveness of beets. (reduces nitrates, as i recall). don't know how dehydration might effect things.

Or maybe you run that much faster.

I eat my share of beets. However, I doubt I work hard enough to notice a difference.
