Another Reason Not to Skip Leg Day

Post by Fat Cat » Wed May 23, 2018 7:06 pm

Groundbreaking research shows that neurological health depends as much on signals sent by the body's large, leg muscles to the brain as it does on directives from the brain to the muscles. Published today in Frontiers in Neuroscience, the study fundamentally alters brain and nervous system medicine—giving doctors new clues as to why patients with motor neuron disease, multiple sclerosis, spinal muscular atrophy and other neurological diseases often rapidly decline when their movement becomes limited.

"Our study supports the notion that people who are unable to do load-bearing exercises—such as patients who are bed-ridden, or even astronauts on extended travel—not only lose muscle mass, but their body chemistry is altered at the cellular level and even their nervous system is adversely impacted," says Dr. Raffaella Adami from the Università degli Studi di Milano, Italy.

Do not like squats, don't know why.
I do capoeira by video lessons. It is also leg day of some sort.

You are in the 80% majority. That's why squatting racks at gyms are mostly used for biceps curls.

I have read a few theories about the evolution of neurological architecture and bipedalism. It seems their hypothesis probably has legs.

Hundreds of thousands years only small part of humanity doing loaded squats.
But still humanity exists.

Is this an argument for loaded carries?

I too hate squats. The most palatable option I've found are Hatfield squats with an SSB, and that's the one I've stuck with.

I don’t enjoy them, but I get the utility of them. My go to over the years has been bethaks with or without a gada shouldered. About once a year I will do a month or so of timed BB squats but that’s it.

I think a double-leg pressing motion is good, but squat/leg press/wall sit/whatever seems to transfer over to surfing about the same.

I also think a single-leg pressing motion is good, again step-up/1-leg press/lunge/whatever.

And yet it is hard to find more natural movement

I mean that weights are not necessary. Imho, 100+ air-squats will be adequate workout "for health".

Squats suck when you are not good at them. Then, as you pick some skill, they become addictive.
