UFC 229: Conor McGregor X Khabib Nurmagomedov

Post by Fat Cat » Thu Oct 04, 2018 11:49 pm

OK, the latest numbers from Vegas are Khabib Nurmagomedov (-160) to Conor McGregor (+150). I do not gamble so I post that purely as a reflection of what the betting public thinks. What are your thoughts about this match up?

I think that Khabib has a solid chance of smashing McGregor. No doubt, Conor's an amazing athlete but his two weaknesses: conditioning and grappling are Khabib's strengths, and he hasn't fought an MMA fight in 2 years. Khabib has some of the best takedowns in MMA, and that's got the potential to stifle McGregor's wide open, lightning fast style.

I should also add that I hate that pikey motherfucker with a passion and it is no doubt clouding my judgment. Not really interested in the rest of the fights, but I'm curious if some of you are. I haven't followed most of these fighters (except Pettis x Ferguson) and I'm sort of under the impression that the UFC is banking on the star power of McGregor to gloss over a shitty card.

UFC needs McGregor so bad and I'd like to seem he lose badly. Unfortunately, it is startling scrolling down Conor's record and seeing all the KO/TKO over and over. Hype aside he is a murderer. Rooting hard against him.
One of the downsides of the Internet is that it allows like-minded people to form communities, and sometimes those communities are stupid.

Although Diaz finished McGregor on the ground, he beat him on his feet. I want N-word to win but I don't know if he has the standup chops to do so.

On your first point, McGregor just signed a 8-fight contract with the UFC; he's not going anywhere and he could drop a fight, bounce back, and still finish on a high note and the pull for some big-money boxing matches like a redux with Money Mayweather.

On your second point, agree. He's not a joke, and in some respects, his antics help to mask that simple fact. But, he's very much a standup fighter; his three losses are all by sub.

Watching that bogtrotter get his ears boxed up was one of my happier moments in MMA. That and when Hendo lobotomized Bisping.

I am very hyped for this match-up.

Conor is a sniper and he hits like a hammer. I've been watching a number of videos on his footwork and range manipulation. His being obnoxious all plays into his game of getting people to rush in so he can counter strike.

Khabib is taller and the reach is almost identical (Conor with a slight lead), so that will stifle Conor's abilities somewhat.

I think Conor wins in the first two rounds. I do think Khabib's ground control is the best in MMA, and he chains takedowns very well, but he will shoot wide and fights a bit sloppy with his hands down as he wings punches. I think he eats some hard strikes and goes to sleep.

I wouldn't bet much money, just my hunch.

Well I think if Conor wins, it will be exactly the way you predict. He's best fighting from the outside, which is Khabib's worst phase of the fight. If he tries sloppy outside takedowns or tries to stand with Conor it will be a short night for our terrorist friend.

I sometimes wonder is Mcgregor's demeanour is part of his contract with UFC. In any case, if it is a role he is playing it well enough to be hated even by the Irish. Obviously, you cannot dismiss his striking talent, and his KOs are simply poetry. The only specialist of similar sort for me is/was Rhonda Rousey with her armbar, surgical precision with which she executed it.

And in spite of my theatrical suspicions I join the majority and dislike McGregor, and want to see Nurmagomedov to wipe the floor with him for all five rounds. Similar to what he did with Johnson and others: take down and maul. What Miosic did to Nganu. There is a saying in Russian: порвал как Тузик грелку, tore him up like puppy tears a hot water bottle. That's what I want to see.

They stop him when he just started to choke Mcgregor, so Khabib was a bit disapointed.

Earlier fights were as good as the main one. Lewis vs. Volkov - probably the best steal of the year. Fergusson vs. Pettis - textbook crazy.

I would be curios to know what exactly triggered Khabib's outbreak.

UFC seems pretty meh now besides the Connor spectacle.

The current champs seem inferior to the champs and top contenders a few years ago.
Take Khabib. A stud for sure but I couldn't see him beating a prime BJ Penn or other former champs. His grappling looks great, but he's been having to take down a bunch of BJJ guys and kickboxers. The division has been devoid of elite American wrestlers so long he hasn't had to face any. I couldn't see him scoring a takedown on Sean Sherk or even Frankie Edgar. Against Sherk he would be fighting off his back the whole fight. Against a young Edgar he'd be getting peppered on the feet, taken down, let up, repeat for 5 rounds.

Woodley? GSP would jab him until his left eye fell out.
185? Prime Anderson and Prime Weidman would pee on everyone now
205? That division peaked 10 years ago, then came Jon Jones who was arguably better than all those killers, and he's already old news.
HW? The current champ is a small old dude(who's also the 205 champ lol)
