Might have broken my hand...

Post by Alfred_E._Neuman » Sun Jul 28, 2019 12:58 am

A few weeks ago I was trail running and took a pretty good fall - caught a root at fill gallop and body slammed myself into the ground. Posterior dislocation of my left shoulder and what I thought was a deep bruise on my right palm below my pinky and ring finders.
Shoulder went back in that day at the ER. Didn't think anything of the right palm other than it's been sore. Went out for an early bike ride last Sunday since we were going out of town for the week to a conference my wife was attending. On the bike ride my right palm got excruciating, much worse than it's hurt from the fall or up until that point.
Had to bear with it while we traveled and got an appointment to an orthopedist as soon as we got back. He suspects a Hook of Hamate fracture and is setting up a CT scan and a follow up with a hand specialist. :Hangman:

Just hope it's either not too serious or easily fixable. Best case is just a hard brace for ~6 weeks. Next worse would be cast. Worst case would be the fracture has been there since the original fall and now won't knit, which means surgery.
I don't have a lot of experience with vampires, but I have hunted werewolves. I shot one once, but by the time I got to it, it had turned back into my neighbor's dog.

Did you have the scan yet? What's the prognosis?

Hey Fats, thanks for checking in.

I had to go to sort of a chain orthopedic place here since they were the only ones that could get me in last week. Never heard back from them to schedule the CT, so when I called to bitch they said it would be another 5 business days. Reached out to some of my XFit friends and they recommended a hand specialist locally. I have an appointment with her next Wednesday morning. She can do a CT on the spot or at least really quickly, and I hope to at least have a firm diagnosis by Thursday at the latest. I'm tired of working around an hand I can't squeeze or press anything with.
If I put any pressure at all on the base of my palm at below the pinky/ring finger area it's on fire, and if I pull on anything with either of those fingers it hurts in the same spot. That's pretty much the definition of a Hook of Hamate fracture. Just ready to get this solved. What sucks about being a flat rate technician is that if I don't turn wrenches I don't get paid. Which means I'm working through it as best I can right now.
I don't have a lot of experience with vampires, but I have hunted werewolves. I shot one once, but by the time I got to it, it had turned back into my neighbor's dog.

Good luck man and let us know what she finds. I guess it's no surprise that XFiters know the go-to specialist to get an injury checked out pronto... :-"

Carpal fractures suck. CT scan is the only way to confirm/exclude it. Get well quick, man.

Hand is a very delicate organ, and we really only get it when it stops working properly. I used to work with a hand specialist in Jo'burg. Fascinating and more complicated than brain surgery.

So...
I broke the tip off the Hook of Hamate. Pretty much what she suspected. Since it's been 2 months and the bone hasn't healed, she said surgery is probably the best way to go. A Guyon's Canal release is the procedure, with removal of the broken tip of the Hamate hook, then grind the remainder smooth.
She said it would be under local plus a sedative. I watched the procedure on youtube done by a woman she recommended, and I'm pretty apprehensive about it. I have a pre-op meeting on the 4th of September. I'm taking it super easy at work and hoping this thing starts to heal in the next 3 weeks. Otherwise I'm getting cut.

Good luck with the healing! Surgery is always a bitch.

That would suck big time. Hope your surgery and rehab go the right way.

Thanks Bob. Surgery is this Thursday morning. Nervous as all hell, since I've never been under the knife (I did have a hernia fixed when I was an infant, but I don't remember any of it).
At least I'll be able to run while I heal. I'll live the life of a Kenyan for a few weeks and see if I can get some speed back. :supz:

Atlanta is a good place to run, but this endless Summer is no boon for aspiring Kenyans.

Might want to be careful. Some other IGx knucklehead posted this in a thread...

Thanks for all the well wishes.

Nafod, my new plan is to just face plant instead of trying to catch myself.

Me until next Wednesday. She ended up taking off 1/2 of the Hamate hook because she said the bone was spongy where it was broken.
This thing is going to stink before she takes it off :Hangman:

Hope the healing goes well. Any long term issues with losing that bone piece?

Thanks!
As far as I know, there shouldn't be any issues. I can't use my hand at all until next Wednesday when she takes the bandages off. After that, if all looks well I'll start PT to begin getting ROM and strength back.

AEM, since this is your "first" surgery, don't rush things. My old mentality when younger was pushing it to get back to normal. My newer mentality after several surgeries is take it slower, let things heal. Hard to do, I know. On that photo of your hand, is your thumb abnormally long? It looks like an index finger. Heal well.

The wifing unit is making sure I don't pull anything stupid while I heal. It's all I can do to sneak out for a run.
Regarding my thumb, it's a combo of long skinny hands, camera angle, and the way she wrapped my hand to the splint. But I do have gorilla limbs for sure.

DO the PT. Do all of it; and take it seriously.

If the doc starts to write you a scrip for a certain number of sessions, ask if she can write it for more, like half again as much. Take advantage. Do not half-ass the PT for a hand injury.
