Red Meat = Back

Post by Fat Cat » Wed Oct 02, 2019 10:12 pm

Is red meat back on the menu?

A controversial study says cutting down on sausages, mince, steak and all other forms of red or processed meat is a waste of time for most people.

The report - which disagrees with most major organisations on the planet - says the evidence is weak and any risk to people's health is small.

"We're not saying there is no risk, we're saying there is only low-certainty evidence of a very small reduction of cancer and other adverse health consequences of reducing red meat consumption."

I'd say most of the time red meat consumption is associated with poor health, it comes in the form of fast food cheeseburgers.

It's an important point, one that this meta-analysis makes, that many of the previous studies have relied on very weak correlations with many, many, many confounds. The same Standard American Diet (SAD!) that may include a relatively large portion of red meat also includes the french fries, soda, and other garbage which muddy the analytical waters.

Same story with sodium and links to high blood pressure. Most new data is showing no correlation. The issue all along was probably the food all that salt was covering, not the sodium content.

In one of the studies consumption of red meat correlated with many poor outcomes. Among them increased risk of accidental death and risk of violent death. What bewildered me at the time is this connection - which clearly implies that red meat is a confounder in itself - was not even touched upon in the discussion.

Health is complicated, especially when we talk about food consumed by generations of humans since dawn of time. Literally. BTW, is mammoth red meat, like a cow, or white, like pork?

While I believe, based on no evidence, that meat has magical powers, it's probably the crap that often accompanies it that gives it a bad name. That and lefties hating anything to do with strength, health or vitality.

Only partly related, but I find the more crap I eat (cookies, donuts, trail mix) the more I crave it, but these cravings go away entirely unless I'm suddenly faced with cookies or donuts at some gathering, or I'm I'm super stressed in the grocery store, which is why they make the store so hellish in the first place. I don't think it's just the sugar roller coaster. I'm that way with other poisons like TV, online games and pron. I was on the natch for 8 years but then started blazing again and craved hard when I ran out. Been away from it for 3 years and have almost no desire for it either.

mj&s:
It's the dopamine hit from the stuff you mentioned. It's crazy easy to get hooked on all that shit because it's all designed to deliver just enough of the feel goodz without the feels being long lasting. I read an article one time where a soft drink maker's chemists specifically designed the flavor to be really intense for a brief time, but be totally unsatisfying after the taste went away. That way you have to come back on the regular to get your next hit. But when the ability to get the fix isn't there for a bit, the craving goes away pretty quickly (unless you have a serious addiction to the thing). I'm the worst with coffee. I'll search out the next caffein fix like a fiend until I make myself go through the headaches to reset myself.

Several years Michael Mosley did a documentary that infuriated the fuck out of me, Should I Eat Meat? As part of it he doubled his meat intake to see what effect it would have on his health. Mind you, along with that he started gobbling up large servings of French fries, onion rings and hamburger buns. Wanker gained some weight and his biochemistry went off the rails, so at the end of the "movie" he raved how long it will take to get back to his normal self after eating extra meat for only a month! Motherfucker, eating two Big Macs instead of one doesn't constitute "doubling meat intake".

Meat is quite filling and therefore harder to overeat than many foods with sharper taste, sweet stuff, for example. Everybody has been in a situation when you are full to the gills but will still have a piece of cake because you want it in your mouth.
