Skate or Die

Post by Fat Cat » Thu Nov 19, 2020 11:14 pm

I doubt we have many skaters on here, but you never know. Anyway, here's a video from 1986 with an iconic performance by Rodney Mullen. He is widely considered the most influential street skater in the history of the sport and is called the Godfather of Street Skating. He and a few others like Stacy Peralta were the big names when I was a kid.

I have sort of a contrarian opinion on Rodney Mullen. He is undeniably talented and definitely was influential, but non-skaters or surf kooks over emphasize his impact. Gonz is the real king!

This video illustrates it more clearly than I could.

Edit: Fuck man...I forgot how to embed YouTube videos. I took the “s” off of https and changed the “m.” to www.

Look up “the freestyle conspiracy” it’s one of Grosso’s (rip) Love Letters to Skateboarding

Basically it boils down to freestyle being LAME AS FUCK!

It’s the point karate tournament (or butt scoot BJJ if you prefer) of skateboarding. ZERO balls.

Fixed for you brah; if you look in your attempted link, you need to have spaces on both sides of the link from the [/youtube] brackets. I don't care enough about skating to argue anyone's case, I just think that the talent of some of the guys is amazing and worth appreciating, if only casually. I'll try to watch your video later.

I think Mullen's point was that the amped up stuff comes at a high cost in ankles, knees, and spines. Everybody knows a skater with a janky knee.

I like Jerry Gurney for the savagery and creativity:

And Curren Caples for the ultra-clean style, big airs, and flow:

Skateboarding is punishing, the extent of my involvement now is carving a semi-steep hill by my house when the surf’s flat.

I was skateboarder dude in that timeframe, but never heard of any of them. East coast kid. Mullen had insane skills.
Don’t believe everything you think.

Guys nowadays are so crazy! I can’t believe pros aren’t dying on a regular basis.

Milton Martinez is a perfect example.
