Confessions of Chest-greasy Lie-man

Post by beefheart » Wed May 09, 2007 9:21 pm

Yesterday I went to the doctor. I'd made the appointment because of vision problems which had persisted for the last three to four weeks. I had done a little research on the internets, and what I had found, I hadn't liked.

At the doctor's office my corrected vision was 20-70. My glucose was 426.
I had no other symptons except for the intermittent fatigue which has made my workouts inconsistent. But I thought-- shit-- every fat old guy gets tired.

The doctor ordered me up an insulin shot. She gave me a prescription for actoplusmet: 15mg pioglitazone HCL and 850mg metformin. I was also given a prescription for a glucose meter. The doctor told me it could take a bout six weeks of medication to get my blood sugar down and for my vision to clear up. I am scheduled to go back Friday 5/11 for further evaluation and further information on diabetes classes.

After the doctor left the nurse told me it could be as quick as two weeks for my eyes and stable blood sugar since I'm otherwise pretty healthy. She said the doctor probably didn't want to be over optimistic but she said I was in a lot better shape than most people my age that find out they have diabetes. She said if I lost a little weight I could probably control everything with diet and exercise. She said I should resume my weight work.

So I'll see what happens Friday; I'll ask the doc about going back on the Mahlersexual program.

According to the American Diabetes Association these are the typical symptoms:
Frequent urination
Excessive thirst
Extreme hunger
Unusual weight loss
Increased fatigue
Irritability
Blurry vision

Any increase in fatigue I migh of had was unquantifiable. The only one I can say I had for sure is blurry vision.

Tuesday 5-8-07, 10:00pm glucose 469 mg/dl

Wednesday 5-9-07, 6:00am, glucose 390
4:00pm 25:00 hilly walk w/ Mrs Beef

Good luck Beefie, I'm pulling for ya. Read up on low carb diets and their results with diabetes, if you haven't already done that. Keep us posted.

Oh beefy....sorry to hear that. Sounds like you got the right strategy mapped out. Drop that weight and there's a good chance the symptoms will subside. Take care.

Sorry to hear, that fucking sucks. See Garm's "Reversing Diabetes" posts.
One of the downsides of the Internet is that it allows like-minded people to form communities, and sometimes those communities are stupid.

Sounds like you caught it early enough in the game, which is of course, the upside, to a shitty turn for you.

Thankfully, you have the base and knowledge to get the exercise benefits far more quickly than many. The same is true with the diet. Best wishes for quick results.

Best of luck; glad to hear that you're catching it early and are committed to fixing it.

At least you know what you are fighting before any more damage is done.
Check that book : http://www.diabetes-normalsugars.com/. Even if you won't follow it 100% it's still a good read

That sucks man, I'm sorry to hear that. I had two uncles who got type II late in life. It made me take note and make some changes in my diet. Best of luck and we are pulling for you.

Even though Fatty threatened to clawhammer anybody that said it: "Thank you, gentlemen"

Not much news:

Wednesday 05/09 9:00 pm glucose 407

Thursday 05/10 5:30 am 312, 9:30 pm 210

Friday 05/11 5:40 am 225, 2:15 pm 241, 9:45 pm 244. I saw the doctor, she was not as pleased with my progress as I was. Added 10mg glipizde to the pharmacoupia. Weighed 250 by the way.

Saturday 05/12 8:15 am 210, 10:00 pm 177

Sunday 05/13 6:40 am 185, 11:30 am 30:00 hilly walk w/ Mrs.

I haven't been scheduled for diabetes management classes yet. There is a lot of conflicting information out there. For example, two booke w/ nearly Identical tiles---

http://www.amazon.com/Neal-Barnards-Pro ... 959&sr=8-1

http://www.amazon.com/Reversing-Diabete ... 018&sr=1-1

--take diametric approaches.

I'm presently go through the Atkins diabetes book--

http://www.amazon.com/Atkins-Diabetes-R ... 148&sr=8-1

--since it was available at my library. I like it.

I think Furman's suggestion of a Zone diet may ultimately be the best solution. I plan to review that soon. My ex gave my copy to one of her fat-fuck friends years ago, so I won't see it again. I have a feeling that Half Price Books will have all of Sears stuff.

I'm going back to Mahler's Fat Loss/ Mental Toughness routine tomorrow. I'm going to restart using the 24kgs for now.

I've been checking Craigslist and Play It Again Sports for a quality used rower. Last time I was under 200 I was using a rowing ergometer regularly (plus I want to be like my hero Gav).

Beefy, are you using the Atkins diet to attack this? If so, your comments would be useful.
