1/29/14-Update for my slackitude
Around mid-October I developed a right inguinal hernia and even chin ups made it uncomfortable. It's not always prominent, my family doc saw it but surgeons on two visits have not after trying to push out my eyeballs via my ball sac. I didn't know I could be that light on my feet. He sends me for a contrast ct scan to verify the location.
Last week they called to ask me to come in Monday instead of Thursday for my follow up. Turns out I have large mass at the base of my right lung likely malignant(actual words on report). by large I'm talking 10 x 11.6 cm., my engr. brain reading the report upside down quickly converted that to inches and I just muttered shit under my breath. I saw it on scan pic and it's quite large in relation to my right lung. Both surgeons cannot figure out why I have no breathing problems or shortness of breath. I told them, I've done quite of bit of aerobic types of lifting and shoveling snow(lately) and no problems whatsoever.
Getting an upper Ct scan and biopsy Tuesday morning to see what's what. I see the thoracic guy the following Tuesday to get the results. I've never seen medical prof's move so quickly to get things set up, you need to see a specialist, no problem they call me same day with appointment, need a 2nd ct scan, we'll set it up, here's your paperwork, they'll call you, done.
On the flip side, nobody gives a shit about my hernia any more, at least for now. Oh the ct also showed I have diverticulitis which has caused me some abdom. problems last couple years, but again, my diet sucked in relation to what I should have been eating, had I known. This is for the guy who's been considered by family and some friends as one of the healthiest people they know. I've never been on prescription meds, even refused to take my pain killers after my shoulder surgery a few years back. I've joked with people that I self medicate when needed with Jack Daniels or Bushmills.
Didn't want to clutter up the FSF with my crap so I'll make this my blog to update my progress for anyone who happens to read it. I actually have a strange sense of calm about the whole thing which has always kind of unnerved my wife and family, they think I don't care, but it's just my make up. Thanks for reading my novella.

Damn Dick, sorry to hear about the possible diagnosis of the lung mass. Keep the blog updated as much as you can.

Good luck. Your IGx brethren are here if you need to vent.

Tues. 2/4/14
Just got home from 2nd Ct scan and biopsy at hospital. Nurses, techs and Dr. Kim were great. He told , me he was aggressive and took 8 samples. Wife and daughter went along, said I have a large bruise on my back, only low to moderate pain if I take a deep breath, note to self, stop deep breathes.

After care nurse gave me a no snow shoveling pass for next few days and we have two snow storms headed our way, the one on Saturday is supposed to be a ball buster. My SIL has been begging me to use his new snow blower on my driveway so now's his chance. I feel guilty since many days he's walking 5-6 miles in bad weather delivering mail. He's an ex-crew chief on Apaches, this time my daughter got it right.
Follow up on biopsy is Monday and Tuesday(if roads are passable)

2/11/14 Update-Good news and not so good news.
2/10- my biopsy results are benign. said it's fibrous, spongy mass. So in the meantime, they've scheduled my hernia repair for 3/18.
2/11-thoracic surgeon wants to cut out mass, said it's not a big deal. It's a big deal to me. He thinks from two ct scans it's sitting at base of lung, and not inside the lung, but depending if it's invaded the lung or how it's attached I could lose part of lung, or worse. and maybe have to repair my diaphragm. Said he's not seen many like it.(if any). Needless to say I'm talking to family doc and getting a 2nd opinion.
Thanks to all for the good wishes.

2/16-Sunday
Walked almost 2 miles on the frozen tundra.
Shoveled snow on three separate days this week alone, one day about 18-19 inches, but did it three separate installments. Feeling good, another doc visit tomorrow morning.

3/4/14-Penn State Univ. Med. Ctr. the wife and I saw a team of doctors and according to them I definitely don't have cancer. I have an extremely rare condition called Pulmonary Sequestration. It's congenital and been growing since them. Unfortunately it's now the size of a large grapefruit and sitting next to my aorta and on top of my liver. Next to my liver is no biggie but it's problematic to the aorta down the road. Probably gonna lose one of my lobes, which shouldn't be a Major problem. So after my Mar 18 hernia repair, am looking to get this thing done after 4-6 weeks, no date yet. Will set a date in next few days.

3/6-Thurs. In the meantime here's what I've been doing for the last week.
McGill's big 4(back stuff)
Pushups 2 x 10-15
Bwt Sq 2 x 15-20
Asst. Pullups 1-2 sets of 10(full wt. hurts hernia)
Steel Cable curls(3 strands) x 10
Rev. Cable curls x 8-10
Kb swings 16kg. 10/10(being careful with these).
I forgot how therapeutic exercise was to my mental outlook.
Note, I got these cables in my late teens or early 20's. and they're beat to hell, but still work. Would love to get a new set just like these. And I've tried the rubber kinds and wear them out or they tear for me. Probably due to my wingspan which is like 78".

3/26-Wed.
Had my hernia surgery last Tuesday, healing nicely. A little sore but pretty satisfied with results so far. Follow up with surgeon next Wed. Starting a new job tomorrow which hopefully lasts till end of my career. They made me give them a presentation for my 2nd interview which was a first for me, but nothing I couldn't handle. they told me it was down to two final candidates and after my presentation, they stopped pursuing the other candidate. New company health insurance should help with the next planned surgery, looking at later this year.

Congratulations on the new position. You'll kick this lung thing in the ass.

I infer from Wiki that this is usually diagnosed and treated early if not prenataly. I guess they didn't even look for this kinda thing when we were kids.

Update. Been delinquent here. Had a grapefruit size mass removed from btm of r. Lung on Friday the 10th. Home monday..
Nights are challenging pain wise w/o narcotics.they scripted them but I dont get them filled. Bef surg I was mostly doing swings goblet sq pullups and 4-5 sets of vert lifts w 35 lb dumbbells(edit) 10 rep Dl's too. Really liked that workout. Miraculasly I kept all my lungs. My surgeon told me I'm in great shape. He doesn't get many lung tumors this size of non smokers. Now it's short walks and sucking on an inhaler contraption that resembles ringing the bell at a carnival. Thanks for reading.

Nov 3-first follow up w surgeon tomorrow at Penn state medical center. My 15 " incision is healing nicely. Ribs still ache 24/7 but getting better. Walking about half mile daily. Reading the logs on igx making me anxious to get back at it. Except for naproxen and Tylenol I refused the narcotics for pain. Was challeng some days and especially nights. I weighed myself the other day and was down 16 pounds.
