Nice log. You play more tennis than I do, and I play a lot.

Thanks for reading. While I enjoy playing singles, I also get some great conditioning and movement/coordination benefits. I only took it up 7 years ago and wish I'd started playing when I was younger. I always assumed it was like golf and had no idea how athletic a sport it was.

Been to a Grand Slam or pro tourney?

The quickness/speed has to be seen up close to fully appreciate it.

We've gone to the Miami tournament the last couple of years. Fantastic experience, other than the traffic and the possibility of heat stroke (and miserable kids). The highlight was seeing Nadal take on Hewitt on a Saturday night with the match starting after 2100. For a few hundred dollars we were able to get tickets about eight rows up near mid-court. Unbelievable athleticism on both sides.
I was very impressed seeing the doubles specialists up close. Watching club-level doubles sours you on the game. Seeing the pros play, I changed my opinion quickly. And since they're often playing on satellite courts, you can sit only a couple of rows up while watching top 20 players go at it (on a $50 all day ticket/pass). Much closer than you can even get at a local HS football game.

The US Open main courts suck b/c it is designed to rape the wallet and make one as uncomfortable as possible... But you are right about the satellite courts. They are still one of the best deals in all sports...

I still remember when I saw Fed at his peak and he was soooooo fast but his sneakers made no sound when he changed direction...

I kick myself for not yet making it to the French Open.

As the kids slowly leave the house, we hope to eventually get to all four GS's and Indian Wells. It'll cost quite a bit, but should be more doable if you hit one of them annually (and do some associated sight-seeing).

Never to a slam, but many pro events and exos. You are right. They play a different game than us mere mortals.

The last one was in April when the Powershares boys had an event In Lincoln. Mac, Courier, Blake, and Roddick.

Mac still has the hands, but age gets the legs, lol.

I've been to Cincy a couple of times.

I saw Borg, Connors, Mac, Lendl, Martina, Chrissie, and Gaby all play in person a long time a go.

I love tennis, have played my whole life (some periods more than others). My training objective is to hang on to the ability to play tennis as long as I can. All my off court stuff these days is gentle and sustainable, designed to support tennis as long as I can fight off the inevitable. Cause getting old sucks.

I'm fortunate to have access to a good facility and a lot of good players of all ages to hit with.

In fact one of the guys I sometimes hit with is the best example of an adult taking tennis up and improving a ton. It helps that he is divorced and has the money, time, and the drive to make big leaps in playing level. Most people who start late never really get the strokes down. This guy, through lessons, ball machine work, and 10-12 hours a week of hitting with anyone and everyone has come so far it is unbelievable. He's the only person I ever saw who took it up so late and improved so much. From age 43 - 50.

Anyway, nice to see tennis in the log.

I, too, have altered my lifting/conditioning over the years to support playing tennis (with the goal of playing as long as possible). I've learned to be careful, such as by doing pullups on rings to avoid elbow tendinitis which has flared up at times with a bar. My anaerobic capacity has gotten much better by using short KB sets, which can correlate pretty well with a hard-played point with a brief rest before the next one.

I hadn't updated in a month because I had a hard drive crash and couldn't recover my password. I was locked out of the site and got no response to pw reset requests. Finally I got a message today about the new forum upgrade and immediately was able to reset my pw.
