Open mat- worked with a savvy brown belt for an hour of exercise. Let him take me wherever he wanted and then worked from there. My armbar defenses were spot on. Caught him with several sneaky submissions. Really frustrated him with my ability to escape his lapel entanglements by "turning in the direction of the skid". Professor's class was competition style drills with standup randori and back escapes. I hit a textbook sumi gaeshi on one guy and hit about 3 perfect de ashi barai on another guy. It was a good session.

2014.11.20

Got the early morning call that my grandmother passed away. My mom and my aunt have a very complicated relationship that this will further complicate. I was very close to her and this is a tough time for me. I spent the day with my folk who are a mess. But I did get to train.

Open mat- rolling for an hour with a variety of opponents including a new guy who would not listen to me about tapping and moving on to the next round, instead, he took a short nap until I revived him from the collar choke I applied. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz..........
Competition class in the gi was fun. Lots of grip fighting, stand up randori and grip fighting on the ground. Then some comp style sparring at the end.

Didn't sleep for shit- this marks the 3rd day of only a few hours of sleep. Grief stricken.

Sorry to hear this and I understand completely. Sometimes time is the only thing that helps. May she rest in peace and you find peace as well.

Yes I did. All two of them.

2014.12.04

BJJ- open mat - picked out a blue belt about 40# heavier than me and roughed him up for an hour> I gave him suggestions on tighter posture, using the 2 on 1 grip, avoiding the back take from half guard, defensive posturing from side mount and mount bottom, muscular versus mechanical escaping options, the correct way of back escapes to avoid the re-mount. It was great exercise and much needed. I think he really enjoyed himself.

Professor's class no gi- Russian tie version of tai otoshi; Passing the closed guard using a behind the back grip transition to a paper cutter choke, and a sneaky version of a double arms under pass. Sparring for several rounds after including a great round with a young blue belt who asked me at the end of the roll if I taught privates. I thought that was kinda cool.

Open mat rolling with Ryan brown belt- we covered the application of self-defense headlock escapes to escape hon-kesa-gatame, the application of angles to passing the guard, establishing the grips that you want and keeping him from getting the grips he wants, and the crisis that comes when we compare ourselves to others rather than with ourselves. It was good exercise. I also played with a leg-laced americana that was sneaky.
Professor's class- grip fighting in half-guard to either kimura, choke, or sweep
grip fighting in half guard to either sweep or back take
