Diet: simple portion control. Less alcohol.

Exercise: Heavy Hands for the first few months. It really helps me shed pounds. Once I lose 20 pounds or so,I'll start training for a walking marathon. YRG once in a while, just 'cuz it feels good. Light weights, high reps for strength. I'm careful about injuries.

One Maybe: I have a job in California from the end of Jan through about May. If there's a pool nearby, I'll swim, and if it goes well, I might compete in some masters swimming events. If I don't like my speed, I would do a distance open water swim, like the one from Cancun to Isla Mujeres, about six miles.

My main problem with any diet/exercise plan is that I start fast, work hard --- it's actually fun --- then crap out halfway through the year. Burnt out mentally or physically.

I did one in 2005 in 6 hours 20 minutes. 14 and half minute miles for the 26.2 mile race. It was my first and I can do better. Also, I was 215 and would like to be 10 pounds lighter for the next one.

1/9 weight: 246, down 5.5 pounds. (the first flab goes quick.)

Exercise: (starting real slow)

1/1--- Heavy hands, my way, 25 minutes
1/2--- 2.5 mile walk in snow
1/3--- 2.5 mile walk in snow

1/5--- Shoveled snow, 20 minutes

1/7--- 25 minutes HH, my way
20 minutes YRG 50+

1/9--- 25 minutes HH
20 minutes YRG

Tim, good luck.

Sounds like you are all about sensible moderation, but just in case. I once jumped into HH too quickly and my elbows complained about it for months. (God I wish the Hebe from Toledo had a different username after reading that.)

HH is a good way to develop a repetitive stress injury. The key is vary the carry, I think. I shadow box, dance, walk, do doubling poling, isotonic exercise, some overhead stuff, and break off every once in a while for pushups, squats. In other words, I try to keep the repetitive motion from becoming too repetitive.

Unless you're on the treadmill, all the walking indicates you're probably still in CA. Good for you.

If you've found the correct portion control, which I'm discovering is a moving target as we age, the weight will keep going in the right direction.

Still in CA and my office is a little less than a mile away. If I take the scenic route around a park, it's 1.5 miles. So 3 miles to work and back 3 times a week. I'm eating a lot more fish because they have a lot more fish here. I think that's helping. Plus the oranges off the tree in my backyard are good.

And there are a lot of Vietnamese here, hence of lot of Vietnamese restaurants. I like the food, but it is pretty light on big bleeding slabs of rare meat.

March 1: weight 236.5 (Down 15 lbs since Jan. 1)

BF% 33.07

Week of Feb : 22 to 28

2/22: walk 4.25 mi

2/23: walk 3.1; YRG 50+ FB

2/24: walk 3.15; HH w/BWE 30 min

2/25: walk 7.25 mi

2/26: nothing

2/27: walk 5.8 mi; YRG Fat Burner (not the 50+, the harder one)

2/28: walk 4 miles

Feb. distance walked 105.35

Year to Date walking miles 150.85

I'm thinking about making it a 1000 mile year in walking. Barring injury (plantar facisiitis, for example) 1000 miles is the goal. 750 miles the "must do."

All strength work is currently body weight stuff: push ups, squats, standing crunch. Usually done in conjunction with a Heavy Hands workout with two 3 lb weights. YRG periodically for strength and flexibility.

Diet: Eat anything I want. Anything. Rules are "no seconds" and leave a little something on the plate when I'm done. That's been working for me.

Week of March 1 through 7

weight 236, BF% 31.5

3/1: walk 4.3 miles; Heavy Hands with BWE 35 minutes

3/2: walk 6 miles

3/3: walk 3.9

3/4 walk/sprint 4.75

3/5: walk 3.15 EZ

3/6: Hike 6 miles, 700 feet elevation

3/7: nuttin'

Total miles walked this week: 28.1

Pretty much on weight/BF goal.

Close to 1000 mile year goal. I'm at about 180 miles for the year. To make a thousand, I should be at 184.

Feel down on strength training somewhat, but spent some time playing with my new trx
