Yo Pink. What's up with the affection for tekki?
One of the downsides of the Internet is that it allows like-minded people to form communities, and sometimes those communities are stupid.

Naihanchi! It's the best kata and the essence of karate.

What FC said. It's the one kata that Sugiyama taught out of the traditional JKA order because of it's emphasis on short-range power development, and it's become increasingly clear to me that it's about both pulling and striking power.

My wife and I were in the Great Smokey Mountains this past weekend.

Saturday, we went for a 5 mile hike on slushy, snow-covered trails.

The weather sucked on Sunday so we spent about 15-20 minutes swimming. Then I ran half mile on a treadmill, rowed for 5 minutes, and repeated 2 more times.

DB BP: 5 x 6 x 35, supersetted with
DB Row: 5 x 6/6 x 55.

Judo, 6:30-8:30. Class involved a lot of work on grip fighting and kuzushi.

An intense feeling of nausea kept me from karate on Saturday. I think I've narrowed the culprit down to Muscle Milk that's close to its expiration. I'm going to look for a protein powder that has less fat in it to go rancid.

This morning,
BP: 5x115, 3x125, 2x135.
DB MP: 3x5x35, 5x3x35, supersetted with
chin-ups: 3x5, 5x3, with various grips. I was feeling some pain on the inside of my right elbow.
Incline sit-ups: 3x8.

Training with you guys definitely helped. The difficult thing is adjusting to the randori focus. Timing and kuzushi are different when you're squaring off than when you're trying to throw a guy who's swinging a club at your head. I think your approach is much more practical, but I still like Judo a lot. I'm learning a lot, getting my ass kicked on a regular basis, and I think the instructor is very good.

I'll be back at karate this weekend, and I'm hoping to start going to Judo twice a week. When I get a break from corrupting the youth and doing research, I'll remove some plants from my backyard and replace them with a makiwara.

Based on your log, it sounds like your crew is doing well. That's good to read.

A little snowfall got in the way of karate class today. Instead, I did a little aerobic Tekki-love circuit in the basement.

Repeated 8 times w/ no rest:
1 minute jumping rope,
Tekki shodan,
8 Hindu push-ups,
4 chin-ups.

Then I shoveled snow.

DB BP: 6 x 5 x 40.

Judo, 6:30-8:30. Most of the focus was again on foot techniques.

Woodchops: 3 x 10/10 x 80.

I'm scaling back a little today and tomorrow because I'm supposed to go to a 7-hour karate clinic on Saturday.

Karate clinic: 2 hours of kihon, followed by a break. 2 hours of partner drills that worked up to sparring, and another brief break. Then 1.5-2 hours of kata and bunkai. My short time in aiki-jujitsu came in handy during this last segment, as I seemed to be the sensei's favorite uke.

Thanks to snow and some logistical issues, I've done little for the past few day other than clear sidewalks and walk in the snow between my house and office.

This morning,
Warmed up with Tekki shodan and Kanku dai.
BP: 5x115, 3x125, 3x135.
DB MP: 8x3x40.
Chin-ups, 8x3. I used a different grip almost every set b/c I'm still having pain in my right elbow.
Incline sit-ups: 8x3.

Went for a 3.5 mile run with my wife in the snow. I had to walk the last half mile because my left knee wasn't liking the snow.

Judo is canceled tonight because it's Ash Wednesday, so I made up for not going to the gym yesterday because of snow.

DL: 3x(185, 225), 1 x 255.
Side Bends: 3 x 8/8 x 80, supersetted with
BSS: 3x 8/8 x 40.
