w/u: hurdles and med ball work

1. power clean, 5x2 moderately heavy
90kg x 2 x 5
Worked up in singles. 90 was fast. 100 racked easily but was too slow.

2. press, 2 x 2/3/5 across
155# x 2/3/5 x 2
Steady progress. Second set was easier than first.

3. front squat, 5/3/2 ascending
135# x 5
185x3
225x2
It really sucks that 225 is mildly difficult right now.

4. deadlift, 3x3 ascending
140x3
150x3
170x3
Felt good.

5. finish
A) hammer curls 12 each @ 32#, 27#, 23#- continuous
B) 2 rounds of
* 10 cable rows
* 12 calf raises

Just sent this to a judo guy who wanted to add Oly lifts to 531. I'm going to keep it here because I'm due for a program switch in another ten minutes or so.

A:
1. Warm-up: power clean and press as many reps as possible for 3-5 minutes @ 65-75% of your max (density training)
2. power snatch ~10 reps (5x2; 6x2; 8x1; 3x2, 5x1; whatever)
3. squat 531
4. bench 531
5. finish: one set each: max pullups, Kroc rows (20-30 reps each side), max dips

B:
1. Warm-up: 5 min. of agility ladders or hurdles + slam ball/medicine ball slams and rotation work
2. power clean ~10 reps (same as above)
3. front squat 5/3/2 (good set of five; add weight, good set of three; add weight, heavy double)
4. press 531
5. deadlift 531
6. finish: 5 minutes of waiters walk (alternating arms) + chinups

Went swimming a couple times this week and played a bit of soccer. Judo and lifting felt a bit off. Then my belly button starting protruding like a pregnant woman's and making squishy sounds when I poked on it. Told my doctor I was beginning to look like Kuato and...hernia. I'll add that one to my rehab tab.

Damn dude, you can't catch a break this year. Oh well, only a few months out from Mayapocalypse 2012.

Well the last ten months were kinda shitty. After I developed a hernia I stopped lifting. I could either lift or do judo but not both. I did judo as long as I could. Going with lighter opponents was ok. Rolling with guys in my class was tough. It felt like I was slowly ripping my stomach apart every time I made a big move. Of course, that was exactly what was happening.

After hernia repair surgery at the end of last year I have been cleared for activity. I've been running with my kids' soccer teams the last two weeks, and it feels great. I got on the mat with the teens yesterday to demonstrate some shrimping drills, and it wore my ass out. Tumbling still feels weird, but I'm on the way back up.

First time under the bar this morning.

1) front squat
45# x 3
45x5
45x10

Fuckin' smashed it!

2) bench press
45#x10
55x10
65x10

Not quite a PR.

3) Back hyperextensions
3x10

4) 10 min row
2056m

I've never been so excited about such shitty numbers.

I scaled Fran. It was exactly the same but without any weight. And I didn't do any reps. P-fucking-R.

Thanks for the well wishes.

Stomach was sore after the first workout back, so I took a month off and got back. I've continued running and playing soccer. I've also been on the mat for some ne-waza but haven't done any explosive movement at all. Stomach still gets sore and feels stretched (from the mesh). But that's better than a ripping feeling like last summer.

Twice under the bar and feeling good. Working back slowly.

Tue
1. Back squat ladder
40kg x 1/2/3
50 x 1/2/3
60 x 1/2/3

Felt fine. Sore the next day but haven't done much with the trunk in some time. Shoulders aren't used to being under the bar so I kept it higher. May as well stay with that.

2. Density- 6 min
* 40kg bench x 5
* ring rows x 5
7 rounds

***
Fri
1. Front squat ladder
30kg x 1/2/3
40 x 1/2/3
50 x 1/2/3

2. Density- 6 min
* 30kg press x 5
* 20kg reverse curl x 5
8 rounds

Shoulders and low back were a bit tired at the end.

***

Weights are a good indication of rehab progress. If I had to give a qualitative assessment of where I am based on how I feel, I'd say everything was normal. The day to day stuff is fine. Kids' sports, running, work in the yard and garage, even light wrestling with the teens and lightweights all feels fine. This takes a bit of effort, though. Hopefully it comes back quickly.

Got about four sessions in the last couple weeks. I need to do better at logging.

Yesterday did some press (up to 145x3) and DL (up to 100kg x 5). This am started Power Bear to the People.

1. Press
120x5
110x5
100x5x4
Started to wear out on last couple sets.

2. DL
100kg x5
90x5
80x5x4
Touch and go. These felt fine.

Yesterday BJJ for 1.5 hrs. I'm starting to roll with one of Lovato's guys.

Today
1. Press
120x5
110x5
100x5x5
One more set than last time. Didn't wear down.

2. DL
100kg x5
90x5
80x5x6
Two more sets than last time. These felt good.

So high volume isn't ideal right off the bat. Hips were sore for a few days and I tweaked my elbow trying to get out of a whizzer.

Got back on the mat tonight for no-gi. Fun times.

Did a few more Press + DL workouts. That's not going to work, at least not for awhile. Stomach is way too sore and feels like it's being pulled. I'm not keen on another surgery.

So I jointed an indoor soccer, will continue to teach judo and roll a little bit. I'm also going to mix some Kenpo back in. Years ago, my school switched from Tracy to EPAK when I was six months away from shodan. I've been mildly pissed about it ever since. I found an old Tracy guy that I can work with and finish my stuff. I'll be away from the weights awhile longer.

Not a bad plan. Get healed up. The strength will come back fast but not if you have a ripped up gut.
