Nationals is out. Had a very uncool medical issue come up that's going to sideline me. I'll find out tomorrow if it will be for a short time, long time, or forever. In lighter news, I hurt my Achilles, not from box jumps but from landing a jump spinning rear kick (in the 30 seconds I was able to spar) in some guy's shoulder as he jammed me.

Thanks. Already been poked, prodded, stuck, and had everything collected that I have to give. Get the fun-cam treatment tomorrow and have already been advised that some dietary and lifestyle changes are in order.

Well, judo nationals were not to be. The short version is that I had a golf-ball sized tumor in my colon. They removed that and a foot of colon using a laparoscope. It was initially told that it was a certain type of tumor that one didn't want to have. A few days later, pathology determined (confirmed by Mayo Clinic) that the tumor was benign and would not require follow-up treatment. I won't be able to do much for the next 8-10 weeks, but, all things considered, I am very fortunate. I'm already down to 211 from 228 two weeks ago. Looks like I'm headed for the crippled division.

Thanks for the thoughts, prayers, and messages of encouragement.

Jeezus...benign is a relative term when they're extracting your tubing. Glad to hear it's working out best it can. It'll all be in the rear view mirror soon enough! So to speak.

Be kind of funny if they'd found an actual golfball in there.

Thanks, all. Expectations can change in a matter of hours. As the options dwindled, I was very pleased to hear the words benign tumor. The waiting room at an oncologist's office is a depressing place to me. I was one of the few that got good news that day.

FC, I don't get that foot of colon back. They want to get all of the lymph nodes and blood supply completely out.

Being strong and fit certainly helps the healing process. All of the nurses remarked how I got around better than the other patients they had. I reminded them that most of their other patients are in their 60s or 70s.

Glad to hear. I wouldn't ditch the diet and lifestyle changes just because it was benign though.

Certainly not. I have shown a talent for growing tumors, and I don't have a lot more colon to give.

Good news!
Big Numbers Expected at USA Judo’s Senior Nationals
This Weekend in Irving, TX.

Tournament Doubles As Trials
For Paralympics In London This Summer

Irving, TX – April 16, 2012 – The number of fighters pre-registered for USA Judo’s Senior National Championships in Irving, TX, April 21 - 22, has far exceeded the count at this time last year for this premier event, which this year doubles as the trials for the Paralympic Judo Team that will represent the United States in London this summer.

This is the second of three major tournaments that USA Judo slated for the Irving Convention Center, smack dab in the middle of the the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area, and that has proven to be ideal, said Corinne Shigemoto, Director of Events and Membership for USA Judo. Texas is a “huge judo state” and the location is easy to reach from around the country.

More than 320 judoka had pre-registered as of Sunday for this elite national tournament, a 30 percent increase over last year, she said. Fighters must be at least senior brown belts or black belts and at least 15 years old to enter this highly-competitive tournament for a shot at coveted national ranking points.
This should ensure that Texas will continue to get the biggest national tournament. 320 pre-registrations may sound like a small number, but these are all adult-division brown and black belts. There are just a handful of tournaments where "everybody" shows up, and it's nice to have one close by.

I'm not back to training, but I have been increasingly active.

I have taught four judo classes in the last week. I stood the whole time during the last one, so that's progress. I also realized how important being on the mat is to my personal happiness. I look forward to many more years.

Mowed part of the back yard yesterday. When I was finished I felt as if I had pushed a prowler.
