Terry's 超級馬拉松ing Log

Post by Protobuilder » Mon Aug 13, 2012 3:18 am

I don't like intros.

Primarily a running log.

Ran sprints and jumped in college - post-collegiate mostly lifting.

Late last year, noticed the more frequently and longer I ran, the better I felt - went out on my 37th birthday in January and ran 37k, which was 20k or so longer than I had ever done in my life. Did my first ultra the next month, an ultra, full and half on back-to-back-to-back weeks a few months later and another half a few weeks ago, along with the normal scattering of shorter distances.

Did a really tough marathon/ultra this past weekend and bombed enough that I decided not to go out for another lap after completing 42k.

I was following traditional running programs but found them hard to schedule around the rest of my life. Thus, the bulk of my training is running or biking to work it the morning then doing the same to return home that night. On weekends, my running club does 2 longer runs and two tempo or time trials each month.

I need to toss in some longer runs and return to strength work of some kind - this log should serve as reference for when I ask questions.

Suppose that was an intro.

uUtra, er, 42k. tough course - 1.7k down and 1.7k up, repeated over 7 hour period. Not sure the elevation and such though some smaller motorcycles have problems making it up this road and a when I rode it on my bike a few weeks ago, was out of the saddle the entire time simply to get back up. Around half field was competing in 21k and most of the rest bailed at 42k. Initial 25k was fast then things came apart - stomach issues and my 3.5k loop time dropped from ~20 minutes to just over half an hour. Spent 25 minutes in rest station after 35k trying to piece things together and find something that didn't make me want to throw it back up but didn't really find anything - at 42k the rain started coming down and I decided to call it a day. Now, 24 hours later, I am pissed that I didn't decide to go out for another few laps but really wasn't thinking that clearly. Lost my GPS transmitter (it appears) as well so day was less than fun.

Nice log. I'll be following along as you do a lot of the stuff I like to do.

A good chunk of my exercise is also commuting to work by bike. I'd love to do the longer running stuff but I always end up with injuries to my right hip and knee when I get my mileage up.

The strength work is a good idea, but it needs to help your running goals, not hurt them. I'm trying to find the happy medium myself.
I don't have a lot of experience with vampires, but I have hunted werewolves. I shot one once, but by the time I got to it, it had turned back into my neighbor's dog.

That I liked reading from other people who did the same is the primary reason that I started this - will be sure to check out your log.

I lifted fairly regularly for years and though I have dropped a good deal of weight in the past year, retain some of that strength. I certainly don't want to gain any unnecessary weight although I rarely, if ever, step on a scale. Strength stuff for my current goals is something that I don't really have an idea about though the midsection is probably what I will start on.

- I did find my GPS device, saving me a good deal of cash and self-flagellation. Things felt fine - sort of tired in evening though likely from lack of rest recently rather than anything else - body felt fine from previous day. Probably won't run for another day. Back to normal following that as I want to work on some longer stuff.

Easy run: 3k
Hard: 5k
Easy: 4.5k

- Club time trial. The guys that I normally run with slept in and I was sort of left out to dry - one of the two or three guys with any kind of speed beat me by over 400 meters but I was ahead of everybody else.

YRG 20-minute routine

- Haven't done this in the longest time though probably should schedule it more frequently - felt good despite an otherwise relatively lazy day.

AM Run: 7.5k
PM Run 7.5k

- have been reading a lot of Stu Mittleman's stuff and decided to try the MAP, MEP, SAP kind of approach. I have, currently, probably more speed than endurance and need to do something to manage my state so that I don't get passed by half the field on the back half of longer events. That means that I am going to try to do a general 10-15 minute warm up and cool down and do the rest of the workout in a general range for HR - this felt really, really easy and I needed to slow down several times to keep in range. However, the latter run was no more difficult than the AM so perhaps could have something to it - will give it 2-3 months and see what happens.

- 12 minute warm up, MEP pace, bit of walking near turnaround - felt so, so easy - could have easily gone longer but ran into fellow running club members and needed to take care of a few things, then needed to get home. Stomach felt find despite temperature increasing in latter half of run - no shade.
