Winter is coming! Family, Duty, Honor

Post by DARTH » Sat Aug 25, 2012 10:13 pm

Sun- Stick drills in the park with Jager

We trained for an hour on basic patterns, movment and 4 walling with breaking in and breaking out.
We took a break and a State Trooper on his bike came along and " suggested "that it was a family park and us training martial arts with sticks and training knives might make some parent's nervous."

I respectfully asked him if there was some new Va. law against what I was doing and what I have been doing at the park for years. He gave me a little speech and left. Fuck you very much. I pretty much am certian it was the mother of the dude who's ass I beat 2 ytears ago using a cop buddy to try to intimidate me.

So after he left we went right bac to it.

Then a local cop came along and asked us what we were doing, ran our names and then said "Go back to what you are doing, sorry to bother you and thanks for being polite about it. I told him thank you and I am sorry some pisshead who does not know the law tried to waste his time and use him as a harasment tool.

Mon-
AM Did pull ups for 10 minutes.
Took boys to school playground and made them hit the climbing wall and monkey bars like little Sith apprentices. Did some pull ups while there.
PM On the Trampoline.
JM 5 minutes. Yoga, Sun Sals and Warrior 15 minutes. Jumps, Plyos and footwork 15 minutes. Stickwork 15 minutes. Yoga 20 minutes.

Tuesday-
GTG Pull ups 4 times through out the day.
PM- Taught Jujutsu/Combatives-

We started with Sassae Tsurikomi Ashi and Goshi and then worked Koshi Garuma froma fast and commited haymaker to prep for the night's main training.

Old school Kata, by the Japanease understanding of the practice. This means 2 or more participants responding to a set attack and responding with a particular technique.

The thing most dont get or practice is that once you both know what you are doing and have a feel for it Uke attacks with real intent and commitment. If it's an ovehead strike with a Bokken than Uke will crack Nage's skull open if he does not respond.

Nage does the technique at high speed and intensaty keeping in mind that he is training with someone he does not want to injure. That's a fine balance and at the heart of control. It must look real. It must feel as real as you can get it or it's just a stupid little MA dance.

We did 1. Kensetsu waza into Kotegiash to pin and dissarm against a knife thrust to the heart.
2. Irimi Nage into a throat crush against a overhand knife to the face/neck.

I balanced teaching, observing and correcting and getting in my own training. I'd get the guys going, grab Lord Stomp, go back and forth (I don't mind Ukeing for him or Crom, they have great control and I know them as well as myself Jujutsuwise, plus it's good for the students to see me take the same beating they are.) check the students and so on.

Weds
AM JM 5 minutes
One Leg Crossover DLs with 53#KB 3 sets by feel.
Alternating Clean and R. Mil press 53#KB x 3 sets by feel
Pull ups on the playground equip. singles and doubles for 5 minutes
Striking and footwork drills with heavy sticks 10 minutes.
Trampoline- Plyos and "Sho Koshugies" 15 minutes.
Yoga 10 minutes.

Thursday I did some Yoga at the begining and end of a session with a client.

Friday AM Kettle Bell play 53#, 36# and 26#KBs - Snatches, Jerks, Windmills, swings and KB juggling 30 minutes.
PM Private Self Defense session- Trained a client for 1 hour, mostly stick stuff.

Saturday- Jujutsu Class

No Blackbelts but me today I ran a class on gun defenses. Guns held at the face, chest and stomach.
Then I made the point that most of what we did was from when they allready had it pointed on target but that if you see them coming you dont need to and should not wait untill they have the thing pointed at you. So we worked on counter attacking as they deployed the pistol.

I had them go random and work on not getting dead when Murphey jumps into the fight (Murphey hangs out at fights, he loves the chaos.)

We finished with working against an asshole who trys to pistol whip you. I had a co worker at Domino's a few years back get pistol whipped in a hold up and I have seen the same in local police blotters from time to time as well as seen a good deal of that on CAUGHT ON VIDEO.

2 hours of drilling 4 wall defense and entry vs. combinations with single stick today in the park with Iron Dog Jager.

Was a pretty good session. Good and aggressive but still maintianing technique.

A good steamblower for some of the passive aggressive shit that's come my way.

Hah, I remember when I had a chance to learn a little Pa Kua from a visiting sifu, and he suggested walking the circle around a tree in a local park.

I tried that the next Sunday morning and within 10 minutes a police car pulled up and the officer asked me what the hell I was doing. Apparently unconventional antics in a park where the soccer moms can see you make them nervous.

We joked several times about if that same jackass State Trooper would swing by.

Today.

Crom's on vaccation, 4 others are out do to work or home stuff and 1 is sick.

I had two of the guys and the 2 boys. Astma flare up and Pizza belly but it turned out a good session for the students and I had fun.

THROWS

Everyone started out with Osoto Gari and O Uchi Gari, with the men transitionining to working combos of Osoto Gari, Sassae Tsurikomi Ashi, Ouchi Gari and Ko Uchi Gari.

The boys then learned Ko Uchi Gari after I had them watch the adults for a few minutes.

JOINT LOCKING/WEAPONS DEFENSE/TRADITIONAL JUJUTSU.
The guys worked 2 traditional knife defense 1 using tenkon, figure 4 envelopment and udegarmae takedown and 2 Using and inside figure 4 envelopment into a front kensetsu waza.

The boys added to the Ikyu-Kensetsu waza from the Wakizashi back hand strike kata practice by adding an Kote Giash based weapons strip when the Uke is secured in Kensetsu waza.

They also worked on Double hand Aiki Interception and entry into a throw similar to Ososto Gari from the Aiki hand formation.

AIKI JUJUTSU

The Guys finished with some practice of Compound Kote Giash from a same side wrist grab.

The Boys beat on the heavy bag with a jab palm and cross palm.

I Have been working the Osoto Gari- Sassae Tsurikomi-O Uchi Gari thing with the guys alot and these 2 were showing results for all the attention paid.

Hoping to hear back from the kid's school Monday if both or at least the oldest can get in the afterschool program Fencing class. It's only once a week and ends in mid December but I figured they'd get expossed to something different.

Small but good class last night.

We worked Front Kensetsu Waza from formal, mug 1 and a stiff punch.

We played with a technique I have not worked in years, Nikyu off of a strait stab, a bit of fun.

We focused on Ashi Waza (foot techniques) on throws, starting with Hiza Garuma and the familiar of late Sassae Tsurikomi Ashi before moving on to Okuri Ashi Harai.

We practiced out of a 3 step d...rill and then used it from the clinch.

Progress was made by all.

Man I cant shake this shit in my lungs! Cardio is a non starter right now, out the door in an hour to push some wood around, it will be agood workout seeing as I will be weezing and hacking so much my heart rate will be elevated.

Friday

30 minutes of DLing big fucking logs from the pile dumped in the driveway into the deluxe Radio Flyer and hauling it to the back yard.

30 minutes of splitting logs with the wedges, sledge and maul.

30 minutes of stacking split wood.

10 minutes of Pull up ladders.

20 minutes of Yoga.

Sunday
1 hour training a Self defense client in the park.
1 hour of Yoga.

Monday
Jack and Shit.

Today

Taught class, worked Daito Ryu wrist stuff. Easy class, energy levels of everyone was kind of low so easy was the way to go.

Iron and wood tomorrow!

splitting wood has got to be the most meditative workout of all time. how does it impact the hernia repair?

Before and a few months after the operation it was one of the few things that did not seem to bother it but I was real adherent to using good form and staying relaxed when coming down on the log. Having been training regularly for years, chopping wood , Yoga and Martial arts (with a few limitations) were the only things I could really do for a long time. Even KBs bothered it. Those aforementioned things kept me in reasonable shape before the operation.

When I was a weak, astmatic little shit one of the things that helped build me up and get my body to actually love hard work was the fact that we lived in Upstate NY and spent alot of time handling firewood with my step dad. Kind of feels like a full circle thing.

I dont ever not want to heat with wood again. Besides being cheaper I like the work involved and the honest workout that comes with it.

When I started reading your last post I wondered if you were going to put sex both as a strength and as cardio.
Don`t forget that it works as a great rest day activity for relaxation!

Thanks. Maybe it comes from having been a tool wearing drywall/metal framing/carpentry mech. Your allways pulling shit in and out your belt like Batman.

But I deserve a "You weak fucking, lazy bastard!" because I could not sleep worth a shit last night so I only trained 1 fitness client (So I just had to stand around, direct, count reps and motivate.) and 1 self defense client ( I did some stick and knife light contact controlled sparring, but at this point I can't call it a workout.)

When I was done I ate and went to sleep for a good part of the day.

I did spend 20 minutes splitting firewood and chased the youngest son around Chuck E Cheese for an hour and a half.

Point is I did not do the planned workout based on the program you like.

Jujutsu tomorrow. I'll just do more Yoga tomorrow then I would have and add pull ups at random while doing firewood duty on Sunday.

10am - 12noon Jujutsu/Combatives

I started the gang of with ukemi drills.

Then Gimli Von Ram-Man took over for 25 minutes of good ol' Boxing training. Shadow boxing for 3 minute rounds while he came around with the mitts and singled out individuals to work the mitts for a minute or so.

He had me work mitts with him for a whole round. Ha Ha Ha, get it while you can Gimli. Actually I appiciate it and seeing as I PT him twice a week it was good turn around. My cardio is getting better.

Then Crom led us through a mug drill where 1 Uke mugs you from behind and after you take him down andother comes at you. 15 minutes of it the 2nd attacker was unarmed, 15 minutes he had a knife.

Then Lord Stomp had us work against stabs to the stomach/heart.

We had my son and young Lu work on ukemi, Osoto Gari judo style, Osoto Gari against a puncher and worked against a standing rear choke.

Good training day!

Tuesday

AM = Teach and train client. Yoga, Pull ups, Alt C n RMPs Lunges, Chins. with client.

PM = Jujutsu class

Had 3 guys plus myself but everyone was seasond Jujutsuka.

One guy had a question based upon a video of a robbery/hostage situation.

Barnibus T. Badass (the assailant) had her left arm in his outstretched left hand, walking in a 3/4 left forward bladed position with a pistol held in his right, up by his chest .(kinda stupid, hip, stomach level would be better for point shooting and personal saeftybut still he keeps it out of easy reach.)

Dealing with firearms is not a subject one should be flipant about, and you bare a heavy responsability when teaching techniques or leading training drills that deal in engaging and elemenating the threat a firearm armed assailant presents and to keep things simple, efficient and realistic.

You also have a responsabilty to be honest when you do not have a stock, go to response for a given situation exactly.

You do see openings based on long learned principles, you sense holes and stall points.

For me that was the hold out at extension left, on left (and we tried left on right and right hold/left gun)hold and side forward.

Before I opend my mouth though, I wanted to use this as an oppertunity to let these guys make a little self discovery and test it for my own hypothisis.

So I told them to wargame it. The other black belt and I stood to the side for a few minutes while we watched them attack as perscribbed and the other try a response. We saw some good, some bad. SOme nice trys and some WTF?'s.

I then pointed out the direction I thought they had the best chance of reaching and not get shot as well as help them not get shot. (Offline leftward 177ish degreeish and orientating on his centerline from his 8 0'clock flank, tight but not smothered.)I did not as yet tell them what technique to use, just told them to keep track of the gun.

Then you saw to good green belts start doing some pretty sound, realistic stuff.

I then showed the, how to make Ikyu of the left arm into rear pendulem Kensetsuwaza into a violent facedown slam and pin work for you in this scenario.

We also worked against a commited but controled and balanced forehand attack with club/machette,street sword;-) tirearon ect. We worked from different distances with different entries and points of contact. Aiki intercept into "Aiki Osoto", The "bowl" 4 wall and feed into Sassae Tsurikomi Ashi (Suprised the hell out of the other black belt when I put it on him.) and Elbowsheild/helmet forward entry into a Thai clinch and headbut, tenkaning left and back and directing the head downward and into a kneedrop pin to face/neck/ribs and what not.

I also made it classy with a nice Tirey step angle trick into Seonage. We worked that for the last 15 minutes.

Great class and I got to train alot myself. I worked with Lord Stomp, so I could trust in his control, after I calmed him down. We were able to commincate different speeds and contact levels to really wargame seriously the gun counter and went on autopilot in many areas on the forehand work, so the smaller points could be touched.

Blending PT and MA with things you need to get done.

Running split green wood in a wheeel burrow up the hill and to the backyard and bringing big, cured logs down it to the woodsplitter.

Did that for an hour and 20 minutes with 4 short 5 minute breaks to swing the sticks and do pull ups.

Ran the boy and hid little friend through the jungle gym like Jedi recruits for 20 minutes.

If the boy... is going to do Fencing and Jujutsu he needs some strength & conditioning training. He needs to know that Nintendo 3DS ganes do not count.

Had something to eat.

Split wood for 2 and a half hours.

Taught the Lads yesterday, added another one.

We spent a good 25 minutes on basic Ukemi. Back and side fals from seated, squat and standing. Doing, coaching, teaching.

We broke down Osoto Gari for both the new kid but I also added some points for the other 2.

We worked stepping off line and entering on the opening of a cave man club swing to the head attempt and into Osoto Gari.

I then used this to introduce Juju Gatamae and had them work it in rotations.

We then had a talk about responsability and when they could and could not use these skills they are learning.

Teach big kids tonight.

More ChoreFit tomorrow.

Tuesday night

We started with some blocking and entering with sticks and using unbalancing techniques to fix the uke for the strike and slam.

Then Nage had to ditch the stick and receive a "Caveman" style club attack.
...
We engaged this with the same muscle movement as the last weapon v. weapon response in the first section of class and adding a Osoto without the Gari takedown and throat pin, and into a pin and arm break.

We also made adaptions and variations of entering strikes based on finding your self in different distances and personal skills.

We then worked with the same attack but with you not being able to use evassive footwork and higher skill movment do to suprisse and possably takena good hit.

From the caveman club attack you formed the elbow helmet and did your best to enter in so you did not get hit with the club or at least the power end of the club. Maybe you even get hit on the elbow helmet with the club?

As when someone does this attack, they tend to relly mean it and advance with the strike, so they have a good deal of energy coming forward on you. You let the collission happen and then blend with his force for an Uke waza into an Aiki Jujutsu version of the reverse crucifixtion but get there in a rather nasty way.

One guy put his arms up in something more resembling a Sheena Easton dance pose and I made the point that you want to burn in the proper postion as the elbow horns make a "sharp pointy thing" pointing at oncoming force.

So the next go he does it right and his uke smacks face first into his elbow.

"See if you have proper positioning, Murphey fights for you."

It was a good class and everyone performed well, accepted critique and made improvments.

Shugyo!

I want to be able to sleep well tonight.
8:30-9:10pm
