2013.01.22PM; jiu-jitsu...just an hour of rolling. I was the odd man out when it came time for class, so I stuck around a bit to help the newer guys and then left on the early side, as I had no one to partner with.

2013.01.23PM; jiu-jitsu...rolled with a couple of beginners for my warm up for half an hour, and then class was an hour of ko-soto-gari, o-uchi-gari, and uchimata chained together in sequence and escaping back mount to a deep half waiter sweep. After that just a little more sparring and then bounced.

2013.01.26AM; jiu-jitsu...assisted with my sons class, an hour of double legs and then a half an hour of Gracie games. The kids were having fun, and my son is slowly getting past his shyness.

Next hour I taught the adults class on three variations of the mount upa escape striking, choking, and when they wrap their arm around the back of your head.

I was going to take my family for a barbecue at the beach but we are under flash flood warnings, it is dark and rainy, so am going to chill at home and cook up a pot of bœuf bourguignon, herbed dumplings, and drink a robust bottle of Burgundy wine.

2013.01.29PM; jiu-jitsu....bunch of guys are getting ready for WPJJC Abu Dhabi trials Saturday, so we went hard today, lots of throwing, lots of pressure. Tomorrow will be their last hard session.

I hit a beautiful tomoe-nage when a guy got wise to my sumi-gaeshi which left me smiling for the night. My throwing technique is making serious gains, and I already am able on the ground; next step is to improve my interface between the two, entering directly to submission.

2013.01.30PM; jiu-jitsu....a half an hour of sparring with a heavyweight blue belt for my warm up.

Class was an hour on countering an opponent jumping to guard and entering directly into a pass, to a rolling back take, to a bow and arrow choke. Much like an army, once you have the offensive momentum, it can be wise to attack decisively, particularly in timed tournament matches.

Followed by another half an hour of medium intensity sparring; we are already ratcheting down the intensity in advance of the weekend WPJJC tournament.

2013.01.31PM; jiu-jitsu....taught a no-gi jiu-jitsu private lesson. It was basically a class on principles, not techniques.

Also, our academy has finally had its first profitable month, after 13 months in business. We were not losing money before, but making money is nice.

2013.02.02PM; kettlebells....took my son to Jiu Jitsu this morning and assisted in that class, then did the following in the afternoon sunshine. I feel a little weak this past week, and this was grueling for me. In between rounds I pulled weeds in my herb garden.

1. Jump Rope x 10:00
2. One Hand Swing 2 x 15/15 @ 24 kg
3. Two Hand Clean & Jerk 2 x 15 @ 2 x 24 kg
4. One Hand Snatch 2 x 15/15 @ 24 kg

...Time was 41:05 minutes.

2013.02.04PM; jiu-jitsu...just assisted with a class on inversions and attacks off inversion when you have rapidly changed the complexion of your relative positions. We focused on trapping a leg in an almost drop single position and posting up into a single leg takedown, to a leg drag, to a back take.

2013.02.05PM; jiu-jitsu...started out with some sparring against a husky blue belt for my warm up; my focus was on playing a very soft game, always moving into my opponent's "dead point" where they had created an opportunity through imbalance or improper structure. As an example, in one sequence the guy tried to come up to his feet, but his center was out in front of his base and I threw him for ippon with osoto-gari so forcefully he did a little backspin when he hit. It's interesting to see that jiu-jitsu movements done in accordance with the principles of the art are actually far more powerful than the most "muscular" of moves. No matter how hard you muscle a throw, it can never equal the power of proper structure, movement, and relaxation.

For class we did half an hour of different arm bar and omoplata combinations, drilling it over and over, and then a pair of very simple deep half guard sweeps.

Class over, we did competitive 6 minute rounds. Most of it was unremarkable but I did hit a very nice hiza-guruma, which always makes me smile.

Thanks Shaf! I remember reading about Rudolph Nureyev and the way the old school Russian ballet people were, and one of their remarks went something like: we do one thing, we do it well, or we don't do it at all. That always stuck with me, and I try to emulate it.

2013.02.06PM; jiu-jitsu...2.5 hours with lots of hard sparring. An hour of leg drag passing drills against De La Riva hooks was in there somewhere too.

2013.02.07PM; jiu-jitsu…taught no-gi class to a bunch of beginners. We worked on learning the basic grips on the body without the gi, hand fighting, and pummeling for position as our warm up.

Once everybody was jumping, we worked on how to get a solid bodylock and achieve the side clinch, and then several options once the Gracie clinch was achieved: if he lifts the shoulder, sliding under to go behind, if he turns to face you hipping into him with an inside trip (or ouchi-gari, take your pick); finally, if he plants his feet wide and tries to pry you off, an outside trip.

2013.02.08PM; jiu-jitsu...use of jiu-jitsu to prevent an opponent from deploying his firearm, the first of sixteen firearm techniques, which I organize into four discrete lessons.

Finished with some sparring, but only about 20 minutes or so.
