Returning with an update.....

I started a formal Keto diet roughly one month ago. Have lost a dozen pounds, mostly water with some fat.

Some caveats.....

Before you EVEN start buy Phinney and Volek's "The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Living".

http://www.amazon.com/Art-Science-Low-C ... +and+volek

Phinney and Volek also offer a work for Athletes called "The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Performance".

http://www.amazon.com/The-Art-Science-C ... pd_sim_b_1

If you are a physical trainer I urge you to study this books before coaching anyone through a Keto program.

It is ESSENTIAL that you send your client to a Physician who knows how to work with Ketogenic diets. AKa Atkins diet.

Personal Experience

Phinney and Volek state that humans in Ketosis will "dump sodium". They call this the source of "Atkin's Flu". I was a fucking mess for a week until Phinney and Volek arrived in the mail. I followed their advice to use broth. Today I just drink salt water.

Another effect is excruciating muscle cramps. Regular doses of Magnesium will help. Caution - some dickheads in the supplement industry have packaged Magnesium Oxide as their supplement. Can you say "Milk of Magnesia"? Get the chelated Magnesium so you don't shit yourselves.

Oils - I grew up on Olive oil. Pretty much any monosaturated fats or saturated fats will do. At first I did peanut butter out of the jar but it would knock down the ketones in my piss. I love drinking olive oil out of the bottle, it's tastier than whiskey.

Coconut oil is great too.

I ended up buying a Glucometer. The Abbot "Precision Extra" is good but the Ketone strips are five bucks a piece. The other one that Phinney and Volek recommend, the Nova Max plus, has cheaper Ketone strips. They aren't very reliable, I was seeing one in three fail to work.

You get what you pay for - I've purchased from Amazon and from reputable Medical supply places. The medical places are better. Get the "calibration solution". If the strips don't work phone up Abbott or Nova Max. Abbott replaced my meter, which I guess was not using the latest SW.

Neither of these meters requires "coding". If you get one that requires coding, maybe it's "old"?

Free advice - practice with glucose strips first. They're a fraction of the cost of ketone tests. Also, the instructions say to heat up your hands in hot water, dry them and then "rub them". DO IT! Otherwise you'll be turning your fingers into pin cushions.

To my amazement I had blood sugar. It fluctuates between 60 mg/ml to 95 mg/ml. I figured that "ketone bodies" supply all energy. Nope.

The Keto strips measure a different ketone body than what's in your blood. They're useful but the blood measurement according Phinney and Volek, are better.

What I eat - Olive Oil. Coconut oil, canned spinach, fermented sauerkraut, fermented pickles, canned Tongol tuna covered in olive oil, sometimes steamed chinese food. I want to add other stuff that is ok.

No carbs. No grains. No cheat days. No fucking slack. Cheat days work for some of us. For others of us it's just a trip down the shitter.

I do not intend to do this for the rest of my life. I do intend to avoid refined sugar like the fucking plague. I wish I'd never heard of sucrose or high fucktose corn syrup. Yeah, I miss them, sometimes, but not very much. Food that is sweet smells cloying. I also have learned to associate sugar with lower back pain, mental fog, mood swings and other maladies.

A cookie doesn't taste as good a clear head. Nor does candy taste as good as smelling a woman's breath up close.

Hell, I might stick with a high fat diet. It's damn convenient to drink a couple of shot glasses of olive oil and feel "fully fed" for several hours.

Mental effects - after the Atkin's flu passed I get a bit sharper and a bit more mellow. I can concentrate reasonably well IF I watch the sodium intake. If I skip the sodium I get an odd sort of fatigue and "oddness". It's not much but it makes dealing with others tricky.

Physical effects - I am definitely losing body fat. Most of us lose fat in different places as we go. Mine came out of my face and extremities first and now my waist is shrinking. I'm almost at the BMI 30 point.

First thing to go were those normal "aches" I'd had for years. Lower back and so on. They vanished in a few days. If I ad fish oil I feel like I'm in my twenties.

My athletes foot disappeared. I no longer have chronic acne.

Strength - I did not test it "before". I seem to still be able to do a bottoms up press with a 16kg KB for reps. Most of my Amosovs are just as easy or hard as before.

Endurance - if I watch the sodium I have better wind and endurance. I did a four mile walk today. I have no DOMS, no aches of any sort. I feel pretty good actually!

Personal Note - I still think that Dr. Ellis is an opinionated jerk. I want to apologize for any bad shit I ever said about Dr. Robert Atkins. I paid for my stubborn head many times over.

One of the dudes at my gym bought me a copy of Phinney and Volek. Good stuff. Glad you are having luck with this!

Thanks, Koko!

April 28 2013 - 13 Amosovs (All of the movements, done for 13 reps)

Two mile walk Up and down hills. Barely winded me.

Today Blood Glucose hit 100 mg/DL about an hour after doing Raw Max protein powder (which I use for when I cannot afford the time to make and eat real food).

Gene, how tall are you? I did Atkins, somewhat modified for a couple years and never experienced all the things you're going through. Maybe I was just lucky, but Atkins diet was the shit for me. Good luck going forward.

I'm 5' 10.5".

April 27 2013 - Amosovs 13

April 28 2013 - Amosovs 13

April 29 2013 - Amosovs 13

April 30 2013 - Amosovs 13

May 1 2013 - Amosovs 10

May 2 2013 - Missed.

May 3 2013 - Amosovs 13

May 4 2013 - Amosovs 13

Ate an hour ago.

Glucose 90 mg/DL
Ketones 0.8 mMol/L

Weight - approx 208 pounds. No longer Obese.

Foods - meat (mainly chicken), olive oil, coconut oil, pork rinds, naturally fermented pickles and sauerkraut, Chinese veggies, peanut butter and nuts. Nuts are bugging me so I may cut ém out. Still adding multivitamin, some E and D and a small amount of fish oil at night.

No fruits, sugars, grains, bread or anything like it. I'd very much like at times to eat a cookie or two but I think of feeling fat, feeling pain and like how I"m treated by ladies now. I won't trade this for a cookie.

I"m checking out high oleic acid safflower oil and canola oils for the long term. They're cheap compared to olive oil.

I take samples of olive oil and refrigerate them. They harden up nicely. If they were contaminated they wouldn't solidify.

There has been a nasty cold going around work. One guy got pneumonia. I cranked up the coconut oil. No illnesses. Athlete's foot appeared very briefly than went away. Naturally fermented foods help very much.

I have a lot more energy. "Ants in the pants". I have trouble sitting still for long periods of time now. People have noticed that I "zone out" while I'm working. One said, "Are you in a trance?" I was hearing him but was working. If people would knock on my desk I can come to very fast and talk with them. Otherwise they're not really there.

I can visualize things much better. Odd - I can still get pissed off at stupid stuff but it isn't persistent. I don't seem to hold grudges very well these days. People bug me and it passes me by.

May 8 2013 - Amosovs(13) Eighteen hour day at work. Slept on site for five hours, continued work. Focus is quite good now.
May 9 2013 - Skipped Nine hour day at work. Finished project on time and under budget.
May 10 2013 - Amosovs(15)

Sample - (today, ate two hours ago)

89 mg/Dl
0.8 mMol/L

I have not weighed myself recently. Pants two inches in waistline less than when I began are increasingly comfortable.

Best of luck with this, Gene. I went full-Keto a while back and loved it. I took some getting used to, but it wasn't bad at all.

Carb cycling, refeeds, cheat days, etc., never work with me: as you said for some of us it's a trip down the shitter.

Thanks, Testiclaw. We all have to learn our limitations and work with them. I would like to know why but the time could be better spent on training and work.

Been offline lately... May 11 2013 through May 20 2013 Amosovs 10 to 15 movements per day.

Tried adding beef jerky. Suspect that it's interfering with Ketosis. Quit using it.

Mental clarity continues to increase. Unclear why but am not fighting it much.
