old guy's nothing special training log
may 11
resting hr 52
wt 224
am erg 20 mins easy
pm erg 20 mins easy
begin nat cancer inst trial on tues with hormone and chemotherapy, pre-surgery.
hormone knocks down T to put cancer in remission. likely side effects are hot flashes. sounds like i'll be a menopausal woman thru the summer
chemo (docetaxel) is supposed to shrink tumor. i get one infusion of chemo every three weeks for 6 sessions. doc says i'm likely to lose my hair.
the hormone/chemo treatment has been used for later stage prostate cancer. the trial is to see if this regime before surgery, which i will have in the fall, improves survival.
because you guys are paying for my health care (medicare), i figured i do this study for you. a bunch of you are going to end up with prostate cancer, the most common cancer in men after skin cancer, affecting 1 in 6. perhaps this study will result in better care for you when the time comes.
i'm hoping to stay active thru all this and figure a log might help me focus. at the moment, i feel fine. the notion that i have a life-threatening disease doesn't compute.

I've had that metallic thing from a couple of medications. it sucks. Lost a ton of weight. Glad to see you're still alive and kicking.

Good luck DMW and thanks. Don't worry about the hair loss. I've been bald since my early 20s and chicks dig it.

Re: my life as a lesbian
thanks for all the support guys. truth is, so far the chemo isn't so bad, perhaps things will be different after a few more infusions.
i wouldn't know i had cancer if the biopsy hadn't revealed it. i've got to be one of the healthiest cancer patients in the world. so no complaints.
today i did a stress test (vo2 max) as part of another study the docs invited me to join. this one is easy. the purpose is to determine whether exercise reduces blood clotting among chemo patients. all i've got to do is get the initial text, do approx 40 min of exercise 3xweek, and do a final test. how hard is that? when i heard about the free testing, i jumped on it.
today was a treadmill test.
pace and elevation increase every 2 mins. (i think just pace, not elevation on my final interval.)
i lasted 12 min
final hr 162. i've seen 165 on the erg in the last year or so.
according to their data, it was successful test, that is, it was a "max" effort.
i was "anaerobic" for about 2 1/2 minutes. that doesn't seem that long to me, but anaerobic seems a vague term. i could see on the graph that "anaerobic" is the point where the value of co2 i was blowing out went higher than oxygen i was taking in. so not a sustainable state. i think i could have gutted out another 30 seconds if a gun were at my head. but there was no gun.
my fitness is 120% of the typical 67 year old. not sure that's a particularly high bar.
vo2 max was 35 ml/kg (i think), which is nothing special. i could change that number a bunch by dropping 20 lbs.
next test in about 12 weeks. naturally, i want to improve. i will be curious to see how this motivation holds, particularly as treatment continues.
take care of yourselves.
