Thanks Bram and Shaf, I appreciate it. I don't feel very well focused right now but I feel like I am getting a handle on things moving forward.

2013.10.15PM; I finished work on the early side and didn't feel like fighting my way back downtown for jiu-jitsu. I came home, did this workout in half an hour, and then took my family for a swim for an hour.

(5/40)

1. Two Hand Kettlebell Swing 1 x 25 (36 lbs.)
2. Press 2 x 5 (125 lbs.)
3. Dead Lift 2 x 5 (235, 255 lbs.)
4. Strict Barbell Curl 3 x 10 (70 lbs.)
5. One Arm Row 3 x 10 (36 lbs.)

Finished up in the back yard with drinks and some sword and buckler fencing; he had water and I had brandy. My son's new gladius arrived, it suits his smaller hand better so he had some good attacks.

Aloha!

"The first asset to health is tranquility." -Bob Hoffman

2013.10.16PM; jiu-jitsu…an hour of rolling with a solid blue belt, visiting from Gracie Humaita in San Diego. He was a big Hawaiian guy with plenty of power, but I played it lightly and had a good time.

I have observed myself developing an unhealthy attitude about training recently, but I am aware of the problem and have made a commitment to myself to cultivate a better outlook. Part of it is just organizing my training so that it is fun and low pressure; it’s simply not wise to try to train like a white belt or a blue belt when you are not one.

It’s not easy to go into the gym day after day, knowing that people basically see me as the enemy, to be avoided or defeated. But at its root, I have created that perception by making people feel defeated when they train with me. I need to both learn to accept this aspect of human nature and also to try to play in a way that leaves people feeling like we had a game, not a fight, and not “beaten”. This is one of the inner riddles of jiu-jitsu, the lessons about the nature of self and others that require me to culture a spirit of lightness and playfulness. The secret, if there is one, to longevity in jiu-jitsu is to create good relationships with the people you train with!

Thanks guys, I'm not trying to get all "deep thoughts" but the reality of jiu-jitsu is that it is a social art. "L'enfer, c'est les autres."

2013.10.17PM; my son was all salty when I came home from jiu-jitsu too late for fencing last night, so I promised him I would skip it today. Came home early, did this (6/40):

1. Two Hand Kettlebell Swing 1 x 25 (36 lbs.)
2. Press 3 x 3 (125 lbs.)
3. Dead Lift 2 x 5 (235, 255 lbs.)
4. Strict Barbell Curl 3 x 10 (70 lbs.)
5. One Arm Row 3 x 10 (36 lbs.)

Finished up in the back yard with a half an hour of sword and buckler fencing and a couple glasses of wine.

Aloha!

2013.10.21PM; jiu-jitsu...an hour of rolling swapping back and forth between two big Hawaiians from Waimanalo. Only one had much technique, but both were very physical. They went hard, I tried to show them how a measured, softer approach can overcome pure physicality...hopefully they absorbed some of it.

2013.10.23PM; jiu-jitsu...light rolling with a big Indian from Mumbai, and then an hour of drilling guard retention. I hate doing inversions but played along to be a good sport.

Thanks DARHT! On an unrelated note, I actually used the quote from Bats (in your sig) in a conversation the other day.

2013.10.26AM; jiu-jitsu with the kids in the morning then "heavy" (lol...heavy for me dammit) day at home with the barbells.

I Hit 160 on a C&P that, while very modest, was done in very strict form and was a recent PR. (9/40)...

1. Two Hand Kettlebell Swing 1 x 25 @ 36 lbs.
2. Two Hand Press 6 x 1 (135, 140, 145, 150, 155, 160 lbs.)
3. 2–inch Deficit Dead Lift 2 x 5 (255, 275 lbs.)
4. Strict Barbell Curl 3 x 10 @ 75 lbs.
5. One Arm Kettlebell Bent Row 3 x 10 @ 36 lbs.

...finished up with an hour of fencing with my son in the back yard.

Aloha!

2013.10.28PM; jiu-jitsu...an hour of sparring against a decent purple belt from Japan. I played a very gentle sort of game, pulling guard and letting him try his way before sweeping him and submitting him.
