Teaching my oldest for the last year formally.

It's a learning experience, especially with teaching your own and not being the Ju Jutsu version of Football Dad and what not.

I see myself phasing from his primary instructor to overseeing his broader martial arts training and having others teach him, i.e. our other Yudansha, other schools when/if he crosstrains in Judo and Karate in the future.

As that happens his learning from me will be much the way many Japanese teach their sons, they play with them when little but when they get a bit bigger and make them their Uke, letting other Sensei teach them the details until an age when the kid is or has the maturaty of an adult, then the father starts to teach again

Seeing him in Fencing class reinforced this for me

So you know where to find me if you want to compare notes.

Congrats!

Thanks for all the good wishes guys.

DARHT, thanks for outlining the process you are in with your boys. I appreciate it. As a parent I am generally pretty laid back, but when it comes to jiu-jitsu I am...not. That being the case, I mostly let the other instructors personally oversee my son and I help other kids. Eventually that will have to change, but it's difficult for me.

2013.09.03PM; jiu-jitsu…half an hour of sparring, mostly playing closed guard. I tried to play a game reliant on structure, angles, and subtle movement.

After that an hour of drilling takedowns and armbar defenses.

2013.09.05PM; jiu-jitsu…I took a long lunch for two and a half hours with Grand Master Relson Gracie and eight of his other professors. Something like 250 years worth of Jiu-Jitsu experience on the mat. Topic of the course was working against the club and knife.

2013.09.13PM; jiu-jitsu…no-gi rolling. Started out rolling with a smaller brown belt, me working mostly half guard and he passing. If he would pass or I would reverse the situation, we would reset. That went on for a short while before he needed a rest.

By the time that was through, a more serious challenge had arrived. He’s about 190 lbs. and an undefeated MMA fighter, incredibly strong. I did a lot of things right: I took him down repeatedly, passed his guard repeatedly, was dominating positions but he was incredibly explosive and would scramble back to half if I let up the pressure for a second. It was a also an incredibly humid day, so I was struggling to control the positions with so much sweat streaming. That, and everything he does he does with total abandon whereas I usually roll with less experienced guys and thus, with less intensity.

Ultimately, after about 15 minutes, he exploded into a ten-finger guillotine that I could not escape. This happened TWICE (AARRGH!!!). My mind wants to make excuses, but really, I just lost because I don’t normally deal with people who can challenge me physically and technically, and he did both. In particular, my guillotine defense sucked, and so that must become something that I work a lot harder on….and I HATE losing.

2013.09.16PM; I am fighting a cold since Sunday and skipped jiu-jitsu so as not to share the bug. Instead I reached into my library and pulled out a random barbell routine; I did it at very light weights so I didn't bother to record them. This is actually an intermediate program by Steve Reeves, from the May, 1951 issue of Joe Weider's Your Physique (Ref No. SR.51). All work was done with just a 45 second break between sets and exercises.

1. Dumbbell Swings 3 x 15
2. Upright Rowing 3 x 8
3. Bench Press 3 x 8
4. One-Arm Dumbbell Rows 3 x 8
5. Dumbbell Flyes 3 x 8
6. Incline Press 3 x 8
7. Dumbbell Triceps Extension 3 x 8
8. Barbell Curls 3 x 8
9. Seated Dumbbell Curls 3 x 8
10. Regular Squats 3 x 8 (superset with following exercise)
11. Light Barbell Pullovers 3 x 8
12. Breathing Squats 1 x 20 (superset with following exercise)
14. Breathing Pullovers 1 x 20
15. Deadlifts 2 x 8
16. Good Mornings 2 x 8

I may use this workout again, which is why I bothered to right it out. Unfortunately, my right shoulder is pretty jacked up right now, so I may not be doing any lifting for a while.

Aloha!
