New Log, Same Stick

Post by Pinky » Thu Aug 22, 2013 3:40 pm

For the past month or so I've been doing a mix of the heavy bag work described in my previous log and Furman-inspired body-weight work, working out 2 or 3 times per week. On top of that, there's the usual walking and makiwara training.

I'm going to switch things up a little now due to my teaching schedule. I plan on lifting at the gym once during the week, and working out at home during the weekend.

8/22
Squat: 3x95, 7x3x135.
Floor Press: 5x95, (10, 6, 4, 3)x125.
Pull-ups: 5, 5, 5, 4, 3. (These were more difficult than they are after hitting the heavy bag.)

I plan on adding incline DB BP and DB rows to this next week.

8/29
I did a lot less today than I had planned due to both fatigue and a reluctance to wait around for equipment. (Schools back in session.)

Squat: 5x95, 5x3x135.
Pull-ups: 3x5, 2x4.
Then I did push-ups in my office later in the day.

Last week was a mess on multiple levels and I never got to the gym.

On Saturday, my wife and I went hiking for a few hours in the afternoon.

Yesterday, I did the following basement workout:
-2 minutes beating the big heavy bag, followed by 2 minutes of a mae geri (front kick) drill*. I repeated this 4 times. (The kicking drill involves starting w/ the knee of the kicking leg on the ground and driving up w/ the support leg. I did this wearing a 35-40 lbs weight vest.)
-3 sets of 5 pull-ups, stretching in between.
-C&P w/ 24 kg KB: (5/5, 4/4, 3/3, 2/2, 1/1).

NICE!

That makes sense and can make a real sold front kick supported by a good standing leg (and drive?). So many do a kick in real fights and get knocked on their ass because they don't build structure.

This is a variant of a Sugiyama drill that teaches you to drive your hips with the supporting leg.

I finished teaching an MBA course last week that crammed a semester of material into 5 weeks of evening classes. As week five of this fucked up schedule rolled around, I came down with an early cold. I'm feeling better now, but still a little congested.

I went out and ran a couple of miles yesterday instead of working out in the dungeon. I thought the fresh air would be better for my head.

Get to training! <<<<q

I'll come over there next year and we'l find a place with mats and we will throw each other around and kicks and punch things. I can bring an Uke or two as well! :axe:

No, I teach people who are going for MBAs.

That sounds fun. Even if we can't find mats, there are plenty of parks near me.

And I do need to get back to more regular training than my (almost) nightly stick beating.

For the past few months, I've been doing a mix of body-weight exercises, heavy-bag work and kettlebells 2-3 times per week. I'm going to add one trip to the gym per week to that mix now.

3/6
Warmed up with 2 x (20 DARC swings with 40 lbs KB and 5 pull-ups).
Squat: 3x(95, 135, 135, 135, 135).
5 pull-ups.
Floor press: 5x95, (10, 7, 4)x115.
5 pull-ups.
Incline DB BP: (9, 6, 5)x40.
5 pull-ups.
DB Rows: (8/8, 5/5, 4/4)x70. (Presses and rows were done with 30-45 seconds between sets.)
Swiss ball crunches: 3x10 with 25 lbs plate behind my head.

I decided to start going to gym again at a terrible time. I was teaching an MBA class, scrambling to pull a paper together for a conference, and dealing with my dog's terminal cancer diagnosis. That's all been over for a couple of weeks. I made sure my old friend, Rufus, enjoyed his final day with me. (Many of my students were less happy about their final.)

Anyway, I've actually gone to the gym two weeks in a row now.

I spent a little time traveling with family and then forgot to log a couple of workouts after returning.

On 5/9, I did a workout very similar to those above (squat, floor press, etc.)

5/16, I did DL, DB MP, Incline BP, rows, etc.

It's been two or three weeks since I was cleared to lift anything heavier than my two-year-old. I started going back to the gym this week. I rearranged my family's schedule to make it easier to get to the gym in the morning. So far, it looks like it's going to work well except for days, like this coming Monday, when I have a meeting in the morning.

Monday, 8/11
Warmup with 2 x (20 DARC swings & 5 pull-ups).
Squat: 5x95, 4x3x135.
Floor Press: 5x95, (10, 5, 4)x125.
DB Rows: (8/8, 6/6, 4/4)x70.

Wednesday, 8/13
Same warm-up as above.
DL: 3x(135, 185) 1x(205, 225, 245, 245).
more pull-ups.
DB MP: (8, 5, 4)x35.
Cable Scarecrows: I didn't write this down.

Friday, 8/15
Warm up as above.
Squat: 5x95, 7x3x135.
More pull-ups.
Incline DB BP: (8, 5, 3)x40.
