2013.12.07AM; took my son to jiu-jitsu and helped coach the kids’ class. After them a blue belt wanted to roll so I gave him a half an hour of my time; playing a heavy pressure game. He has a bit of a frantic style, so I just let him exhaust himself.

Later in the day I did the following workout (19/40):

1. Two Hand Kettlebell Swing 1 x 30 @ 36 lbs.
2. Two Hand Press x 4, 4, 2 (135, 145, 150 lbs.)
3. Dead Lift 2 x 5 (225, 275 lbs.)
4. Strict Barbell Curl 2 x 10 @ 85 lbs.
5. One Arm KB Row 3 x 10 @ 36 lbs.

Finally, at the end of the day my son and I went toe-to-toe, long sword versus sword and buckler. It’s pretty cool to see how much subtle offensive and defensive movement he has absorbed since we started playing with these swords. Recovery was Kaiserschnitzel and a bottle of Saint Emilion.

Aloha!

2013.12.09PM; jiu-jitsu...warmed up sparring with my strongest sparring partner. He is the one that put me away with a bow-and-arrow choke after I flubbed a toehold after a 25 minute death match a couple weeks back.

My mistake last time was falling into playing his game, instead of imposing mine. I even know why I did it--to be pleasant--but it cost me. This time I played my A game and passed his guard, pinned him in side control, and put him away with a Billy Robinson headlock. It was basically effortless. Second round I passed him again; he went for a berimbolo roll and I dove into a Xande-style crossface counter to half guard pass that worked like a charm.

Spent the next hour drilling passes for the first half and north-south attacks (paper cutter choke and snapping his lapels up to take the back), then a little more sparring from deep half and called it a night.

Aloha!

It's a head and arm choke using your body from side control; I am looking for a picture and will post one if I find it. You can do it as a choke, a neck crank, or just a hold.

He got in a brawl with a taxi driver a couple of weeks back, his hand is still fucked up and he had teeth marks all over his forearm and leg. He was elbowing the guy in the face from mount and when he stood up to get off him, the guy grabbed his hair and bit his leg. Drake ended up stomping him out and fleeing the scene like a murderer.

2013.12.15PM; an hour of backyard battles with my son: sword and buckler, longsword, and now battle axes have been added to the training mix. My son is becoming more proficient in "grippes" to stifle my weapon hand while laying to with his sword.

2013.12.16PM; jiu-jitsu...45 minutes of relatively intense sparring for openers. My training partner had a good showing at the last NAGA tournament and now has a fire under him to train, so we get some good rolls in. I mostly was playing closed and old school open guard, with feet on the hips, but I did also get a good osoto-gari that left him spinning on the mat like a top.

Followed that with an hour of drilling side control escapes and reverse arm bars, then finished the night with more rounds of sparring, with levels ranging from blue belt to multi-degree black belt. I played almost entirely from closed guard with the arm wrapped, working the collar choke and arm bar combination. Grips, hips, and breathing.

2013.12.17PM; Jiu-Jitsu...rolled for an hour with a decent blue belt. I wasn't really performing very well, I felt kind of stiff and uninspired, but tried to make a good show of it.

2013.12.18PM; Jiu-Jitsu…just an hour of pre-WWII judo O:) Kidding, but only sort of. All matches start from the feet, but even a clean ippon does not stop the action once it hits the mat. I threw my opponent with sumi-gaeshi and a drop seoi-nage, got reversed when I dropped in on a tomoe-nage and swept with kosoto-gake, and hit a huge hikikomi-gaeshi counter when my opponent went for a single leg.

"When I was 17 I was in a bar with Relson in California. An argument broke out with Rolker Gracie and this other guy. Rolker just was saying you don't want to do this man. I turned around and Relson had his hand wrapped with a bar towel already. Back then all the doormen were either Gracie or Machado. And when a fight broke out everyone was one team. The door guys kicked the guy out there. Relson kicked down a t-shirt and everything was cool." -"Little" Tony Pacenski

2013.12.21AM; no jiu-jitsu for the kids because of the holiday, so I just lifted at home. I made it through 21 workouts of a proposed 40 workout plan, but I am just burnt out on what I have been doing and need a change. I will just do a typical barbell course to make it through the holidays and cook up a new plan for the new year.

1. Press 3 x 8
2. Curl 3 x 8
3. Bench Press 3 x 8
4. Bent Row 3 x 8
5. Squats 3 x 12
6. Pullovers 3 x 15
7. Calf Raises 3 x 15
8. Abs 2 x 20

More swordplay in the afternoon for light recovery.
