2013.12.31; there is no time for peace in life, and all signs point to 2014 being a superb year of training. Here is the first of a 40-workout plan, which will be very similar to the previous one but with more effective programming. As I've stated elsewhere, my current training goals are:

1. To improve my ability as a teacher of Jiu-Jitsu, and in particular, to spend more time developing fundamentals with my son.
2. To achieve a body weight clean and press.
3. To achieve a 2 x body weight dead lift.

I would add that I am not eligible for any promotion for another 18 months, at which time I can become a first degree professor. At any rate, a new log, and a new year begins with the first workout.

1. Two Hand Kettlebell Swing 1 x 30 @ 36 lbs.
2. Two Hand Press 3 x 3 @ 135 lbs.
3. Dead Lift 3 x 3 (225, 255, 275 lbs.)

2014.01.01PM; one and a half hours hike. I needed some solitude; I had a wicked hangover and was woken up by a horrible tragedy. Our dear friends' in Sarajevo daughter drowned last night in her bath tub after passing out from a buildup of carbon monoxide. She was 13. Anyway, I needed some time to get a grip so I just went out walked in the mountains.

2014.01.03PM; Jiu-Jitsu...taught the self defense class, defense against reverse-grip knife attacks (aka "the icepick" grip). One student had a jacked knee, the other had stitches in his head, etc. so we called it with no sparring.

2014.01.04AM; Jiu-Jitsu...took my son to Jiu-Jitsu and taught the class; we're working on making them more aggressive on their feet so they don't just lock up and dance for five minutes. We had them work on a few ways to beat the lapel grip and then rounds of sumo wrestling, so they learn to get in their and attack aggressively.

After Jiu-Jitsu I took my son and father-in-law to lunch (Korean BBQ) and then did this at home (2/40):

1. Two Hand Kettlebell Swing 1 x 30 @ 36 lbs.
2. Two Hand Press 2 x 5 @ 135 lbs.
3. Dead Lift 2 x 5 (275, 300 lbs.)

Finally, I went for a short hike on the mountain, a little over an hour.

2014.01.06PM; Jiu-Jitsu…sretan badnjak! Rolled with an old blue belt just coming back after six months out for knee surgery; I mostly let him do what he wanted for a while, then worked him to open guard and submitted with triangles. When I am using triangles, you know I am being charitable as it is my least competent submission, but what the hell. After that I wanted to join class but was the odd man out, so I helped a different, older, injured guy to work on his knife defenses and then bounced.

2014.01.08PM; Jiu-Jitsu...rolled with a moderate blue belt as my warm up, just hanging back and letting him run for a while, then building position from half guard. After that I did the warm ups with the class, but I was odd man out so I had to find some recourse. I don't ever force a lower belt out of the class as the odd man because they pay, and I don't.

To my rescue came a 3rd-degree black belt who wanted to train, so we spent the better part of an hour rolling. He’s not old, but definitely middle age, so we played a measured game, with no spastic tendencies. I mostly played “old school” foot on the hips open guard and closed guard; I did manage to get a nice bicep slicer, a cross lapel choke, and came within a whisker of a good bow-and-arrow choke but I got a crazy cramp in my calf and had to stop and stretch it out. Was fun!

2014.01.09PM; no. 5 - I really didn't want to dead lift for a third time this week, so I loaded the bar light and did them dynamically trying to get maximum bar speed.

1. Two Hand Kettlebell Swing 1 x 30 @ 36 lbs.
2. Two Hand Press 3 x 3 @ 140 lbs.
3. Dead Lift 3 x 3 @ 225 lbs.

2014.01.10PM; Jiu-Jitsu…taught the Friday self-defense class, the final three knife defenses. I had a classic “non-compliant” student who was eager to challenge everything I said and tell me why it wouldn’t work. I would be demonstrating a technique and he would suddenly stab me and say, “see!” *sigh* Nonetheless, I tried to engage him and the other people in the class seemed to appreciate that, so perhaps it was a good learning opportunity for me. Not all students are eager to work with their instructor, and some people legitimately learn by challenging the material, so…yeah. Anyway, I did some sparring after that and called it a day.

2014.01.11AM; Jiu-Jitsu…taught the Saturday morning children’s class, about 14 kids if I recall correctly. We have been working on our stand up, the past couple weeks we did sumo games to build aggression and an attacking style. This week we built on it by going over grip breaks so the other child cannot stall out on the feet, and some simply takedowns: bodylock to a trip (kosoto-gake) and a simple harai-goshi. We finished up with some games and called it a day. If nothing else, I am improving at communicating with the children.

In the afternoon I did this:

1. Two Hand Kettlebell Swing 1 x 30 @ 36 lbs.
2. Two Hand Press x 4, 4, 2 @ 140 lbs.
3. Dead Lift x 4, 4, 2 (255, 275, 315 lbs.)

2014.01.12AM; went for a short hike, perhaps 4 miles, in the morning before dim sum with the family. In the afternoon I finally purchased a good dumbbell set; it cost me $300 but now I have a pair from 5 to 40 pounds in five pound increments. Got excited and did a couple of supersets:

A1. Alt. Dumbbell Curls 3 x 10 @ 30 lbs.
A2. Dumbbell French Press 3 x 10 @ 15 lbs.

B1. Dumbbell Lateral Raise 3 x 10 @ 15 lbs.
B2. Alt. Dumbbell Reverse Curls 3 x 10 @ 10 lbs.
