I always smile when I see this stuff. Someday, he'll be telling his grandkids about how great his dad was and the epic adventures that were had.

Thank you Kaz, that is a really nice thing to say.

2014.03.07PM; Jiu-Jitsu…taught the second half of the GJJ headlock escape curriculum. Followed that with a three-man round robin format sparring session, as typical these days, playing mostly from guard which devolves into a mixture of sitting guard, closed guard, and the classic feet on the hips guard.

After sparring I noticed that the scheduled professor still hadn’t arrived, so I taught the class on transitioning from closed to open guard, and simple attacks and sweeps in the transition.

2014.03.08AM; Jiu-Jitsu...helped teach the children's Saturday morning class. It's gratifying to see that my son is getting more comfortable with the roughness and contact nature of Jiu-Jitsu.

Later in the day I did this workout:

1. Back Squats 5 x 5 (135, 185, 235, 235, 235 lbs.)
2. Bench Press 5 x 5 (135, 160, 185, 185, 185 lbs.)
3. Ring Chins x 1, 2, 2, 2, 2
4. DB Wrist Curls 2 x 10 @ 25 lbs.
5. Calf Raises 2 x 15 @ 110 lbs.

2014.03.10PM; Jiu-Jitsu...walked to the academy, worked the heavy bag until some guys showed up, then rolled until class started. I was odd man out so I just helped oversee the class.

2014.03.12PM; Jiu-Jitsu...walked to the academy, and luckily our best brown belt showed up at the same time.

We rolled for a good twenty minute death match. I took him down and after a spell passed his guard, but as I was setting into a choke from side control he bucked me around a bit and in the scramble he returned to guard. I tried to resist and made an error of stopping him from closing his guard by dropping an elbow to the mat, he immediately changed and stuffed my arm across and took my back. I escaped to bottom half, but rolled him when he went for a sleeve choke. On top I survived an arm lock attack, opened his guard and passed to half and then to mount, and finally to his back.

At that point class was starting, so we broke it off there. Finished up with an hour of drills, attacks from guard and top side control.

Aloha!

2014.03.14PM; Jiu-Jitsu...taught a small Friday self defense class, the first four of the blunt instrument defenses.

Afterward I sparred a bit with one of the brown belts; the first round I quickly finished him from the back, but the second round I let him set the pace and tried to accommodate him, looking for opportunities rather than trying to create them. Ultimately I did take his back again, but as I tried to bring my hand around his face to set a choke, the corner of my thumbnail sliced open the bridge of his nose. I felt like an absolute dick, so we called it there and I ran to go get him some gauze.

Note to self: don't fuck up your students' faces.

2014.03.15AM & PM; Jiu-Jitsu...morning class with the young guns. We are in full contest preparation mode, so it was all drilling escapes from the bottom and sparring. Even my son did pretty well; he avoided getting submitted against a much older and more experienced kid. He definitely doesn't seem to have my aggression, but he did seem to be relaxing and enjoying contact sport.

Later in the afternoon, I did the following workout:

1. Press
65 x 10
100 x 5
110 x 5
120 x 5
130 x 5
135 x 3
140 x 3
145 x 3
150 x 2
155 x 2
160 x 1

2. Squats
45 x 25
135 x 20 Superset w/DB Pullovers x 15 @ 2 x 15 lbs.
175 x 15 Superset w/DB Pullovers x 15 @ 2 x 15 lbs.
205 x 10 Superset w/DB Flyes x 15 @ 2 x 15 lbs.
235 x 5 Superset w/DB Flyes x 15 @ 2 x 15 lbs.

Aloha!

2014.03.16AM; went for a nice hike on a blustery day, just to get some sunshine and fresh air. It wasn't more than an hour and a quarter, so not very long, but the effect of these is more psychological than physical.

As always,.. great journal, my friend. Keep it up. Oddly, Vernon Rieta has been responding to some posts of mine. He's a jewel in our martial journey.

2014.03.17PM; our Jiu-Jitsu academy is right above the Royal Saloon on the old waterfront, and the entire neighborhood is shut down for a huge street part on Saint Patrick's Day. We have a huge bash at the academy, but since I neither drink nor party much, I elected to stay home and do this:

1. KB Power Cleans 1 x 10 @ 2 x 54 lbs.
2. BB Curls 2 x 8 @ 90 lbs.
3. DB Reverse Curls 2 x 8 @ 20 lbs.
4. DB Concentration Curls 2 x 8 @ 20 lbs.
5. DB French Press 2 x 8 @ 2 x 20 lbs.
6. Squats x 25, 20, 15, 10, 5 @ 45, 135, 175, 205, 235, superset w/
7. DB Pullovers & DB Lateral Raises 2 x 15 each @ 2 x 15 lbs.
8. BB Press 2 x 8 @ 120 lbs.
9. KB Row 2 x 8 @ 54 lbs.
10. KB Shrugs 2 x 8 @ 2 x 54 lbs.
11. KB Side Bends 2 x 8 @ 54 lbs.

That can have you feeling like real shit.

My worst moment on the mats s right after making black belt I went down to the old Ryu's southern Dojo.

A Nidan pulled me over to work with a weak, old white belt and it pissed me off big time as I did not drive down to another county to work with weaklings I went down there to work with the other Yudansha and brown belts, so I had real attitude going. So I threw the guy and went to simulate a stomp to the face. Problem is my mood must of effected my contol and I put my heel to the corner of his glasses wearing eye and it cut him.

The remorse and shame were a motherfucker, I felt about an inch fucking tall for doing that.

Yeah, it definitely was not one of my better moments on the mat. He's a good guy and understood it was an accident, but still.

2014.03.19PM; Jiu-Jitsu…assisted with an hour’s class: half was passing drills, the other half was devoted to the flower sweep and a back-take if he posts his free arm to resist the sweep. Finished the evening with 8 minute rounds, I was happy as I got to roll with a third degree black belt. :)

2014.03.22AM; Jiu-Jitsu…taught the Saturday children’s class. They have a tournament coming up next weekend, so mostly today was their last hard sparring day. We reviewed three escapes from bottom position we have been working on all month, then just had them do round after round of sparring to get them mentally ready.

After class I rolled for half an hour with one big and one small blue belt. With the little guy I just worked from open guard, but the big guy got swarmed from top for kimuras and cross collar chokes from knee on belly.

2014.03.24PM; Jiu-Jitsu...Started out with some light training with a little Mexican, throwing him for a yuko with sumi-gaeshi and ippon with a sharp osoto-gari when he didn’t watch his feet. I love it when you throw them so well they do a little breakdancing back spin when they hit, straight into knee on belly.

He’s a little guy so I didn’t hold him down on the mat, but I appreciated his aggression and fighting spirit; many people I train with have a tendency to mentally break and go to their happy place but he kept fighting no matter what.

After that, an hour of arm bars from closed guard: basic set-up, then if he posts up the near leg, then the far leg. Each situation has a simple way to continue the arm bar, but they are counterintuitive so they need to be drilled thoroughly. I believe a lot in simple submissions with refined setups.

Finished up with 6 minute rounds, I got the full range from crappy white belt to grizzled black belt, so it was a good day of training.

Aloha!

Tom, it's just common sense. Rare submissions are rare for a reason, the basics like arm bars, rear naked choke, guillotines, etc. win far more fights.

2014.03.25PM; Jiu-Jitsu...rolled with a blue belt for 25 minutes and then assisted the class, which was very basic arm bars from gwaaard.

Aloha!
