Matters of small concern

Post by zak-zombie » Mon May 26, 2014 9:53 pm

Been a tough few months with family life between cancer scares, problems with my daugher continue unabated it makes me really sad to see what shes going through. Basically I have added 10-15kgs of fat through a combination of stress and shitty eating.

I have been training jiu jitsu but with half hearted approach, no stretching or strength work has left me stiff and deconditioned, I want to change this my lower back and knees are feeling fragile so what ever I do this area will have to be worked on.

The only bright side to all of this is that I have returned to sketching and painting.

Really sorry to hear about all of that - wondered where you'd been to. That sort of stuff puts our hobbies in perspective a bit. Hope things start to improve for you and your family mate.

Best wishes.

Sorry for the rough times, zak. I hope things get better for you and the family. I understand the stress of a teenage daughter although it sounds as if you are having a rougher time than me.

Thanks Odin and Mickey,

Things like this do help put hobbies etc into perspective, I have been spending a lot more time at home, where I should be. A lot of the changes in my training will reflect health and longevity trying to lead by example.

Tuesday,

20 minutes of various kettlebell swings, clean and snatches with the 20kg bell interspersed with some club mills and casts using 8kg club. This was followed by some Maxwell inspired mobility and yoga for 10 minutes

This was light on reps and intensity, its a start in the right direction, hopefully.

This sounds like a very tonic like routine. Nice.

Best wishes. My wife went tthrough breast cancer treatment last year, and any sort of close experience with cancer in the family isn't something I'd wish on anyone. But you're right: it does (or can) put a lot of other things in pperspective.

Thanks guys.

Wednesday,

1. Close squats 3 x 20
2. Pushups 3 x 20
3. Lunges 2 x 10/10
4. Full bridge 3 x 20' holds
5. Headstand 2 mins

BJJ,

Class warm up was on guard retrieval, then moved onto passing the DLR guard, 5 x5 min rounds to end with 30' rest inbetween was a gassed as I upped the tempo beyond my usual middle of the road speed.

Sorry to hear that. I had a couple of bumpy years. An old karate teacher told me something. "When you get to the end of your rope, hang on a little bit longer".
Well, it worked. Training helps and so does humor, believe it or not.

They definitely work better than wallowing, even when wallowing is tempting. As Tom said, hang in there a little bit longer.

Thanks again guys, spent the weekend at the beach walking and rock pooling.

Monday,

20 minutes stretching focusing on the hips and legs, a light day

Jiu jitsu. Warmed up with guard retrieval drills than moved to sweeps from modified X guard. Specific sparring first to points, spent 15 minutes before the first points were scored passing this one kids guard is becoming a nightmare - in a good way, even if I am not really a fan of berimbolo and worm guards its fun trying to figure out an answer to it.

Tuesday,

Freestyle KB work various cleans, press and windmills lots of h2h swings. Just dont have the focus to follow a routine so I am just freestyling for a while, hoping that some work is better than no work.

Jiu jitsu, open mat hard rolling for an hour with a blue belt whose guard is frustrating to pass, so I decided to work my own guard which is rusty and something I may focus on for a while as I have been busy developing to much of a liking passing.

Tomorrow my middle daughter is being sworn in as a police cadet should be a good evening, lookkng forward to seeing her marching about in uniform, than its time to focus on getting her ready for the duke of Edinburgh award.

Thursday,

Been thinking on routine vs no routine, and it may be best to have some structure if only to see some progression etc. Ive decided to give simple and sinister a run along with Tom's AOW twice a week, slow and steady progress is the goal, so the weights and progressions are going to be embarrassing for a while.

Today was kb day:

Warm up,

Swings 20kg 5 x 10/10
Tgu 20kg 5x 1/1

Fitting in mobility and flexibility work while watching tv, this may help me not pouch on crappy food, which I've been doing too much of.

Friday,

Jiu jitsu, class was on half guard path to the back and a sweep. Rolliing was solid caught a heel in the eye, I've a suspicion it was on purpose as I dont think the guy liked being dominated, gonna leave it there for now.

Kb work

Swings 5 x 10/10 with 20kg bell
Getup 5 x 1/1 with 20kg bell
Did some ring pull ups after

Nothing sexy, just trying to build some momentum.

Monday part 2

Went to jiu jitsu even though stress is high, it counts as fun and I need something to take my mind of things otherwise I would drink and drinking never solved anything. Was a good class on the half guard sweep and take the back 5 x5 min rounds to finish pace and pressure were the elements I played with tonight.

Jiu jitsu, passing drills for 45mins then specific guard sparring for 45mins, usjng a tactic/principal im working on a lot lately when passing basically it reveloves around making them work hard for sweeps and I just follow take space restrict there options to the position where I want to go then pass I also refuse to let them establish any guard If I can.

Good to see you logging again. Keep it up!

Maybe stretch the thumbs/hands out before class? Stretching spots that I jam helps my body awareness of them.
