鬼ヶ島!!! DEMON ISLAND MUST BE DESTROYED!!! 鬼ヶ島!!!

2014.06.16PM; new log...long story short, I have been very sick. As I predicted, jiu-jitsu and lifting triggered my chronic sinus problems and I have been laid out with flue-like symptoms. This happened back in February, and before that in November. I have demanded, and received, referrals to a pulmonologist and allergist, so hopefully I will be able to get the bottom of my problems as they are incredibly disruptive to my work and play.

That said, I refuse to give up. Since I was only 2.5 weeks into 10 week cycle, I am just beginning again. In translating the Faleev book I have already discovered some things I have been doing wrong, so I hope to improve my performance over the previous attempt. My first jiu-jitsu training was last Friday.

Day 1, Day A:

1. Squats
45 x 15
135 x 8
185 x 6
205 x 4
235 x 5
235 x 5
235 x 5
235 x 5
235 x 5

2. Stretching

Aloha!

2014.06.17PM; jiu-jitsu...rolled with an old guy who I used to train with in the 90s, trying to get back into things for my warm up. I just let him present me with a position and then worked it, resetting a lot to get him back into the game. It was fun, I think he had fun too.

After that I rolled with a big Indian guy who tries to force everything, but he liked working with me too I guess because he asked me to do two private lessons a week with him. I told him I thought that this is excessive, you can't absorb concepts beyond a certain rate, but I am going to do one a week with him to start.

Assisted a bit with the class and called it.

Aloha!

P.S. 3 miles round-trip walking to the academy.

2014.06.19PM; Faleev Week 1, Day B...first interesting tweak is that all of the online articles I can find related to Faleev state that the light day is 80 percent for five sets of four. But in his book Secrets of Strength Training, he says that the light day should be 60 percent, for four sets of four. Does anyone have any insight? Why the discrepancy?

1. Bench Press
45 x 15
115 x 8
140 x 6
165 x 5
185 x 5
185 x 5
185 x 5
185 x 5
185 x 5

1. Squats (Light Day = 0.6 volume and intensity, 4 x 4)
45 x 15
105 x 8
115 x 6
140 x 4
140 x 4
140 x 4
140 x 4

Finished with hard stretching.

2014.06.20PM; Jiu-Jitsu...taught the Friday self defense class.

It was a difficult mix, from first lesson to black belt, but I think I made it work. Finished with about 15 minutes of rolling with my black belt student.

2016.06.21AM; Faleev, Week 1, Day C.

I watched world cup matches between sets. I purposely dropped the last rep of the deadlift so that I could return to this weight next week; light though it is I don't want to get out ahead of myself. I am still waffling about whether the light day is supposed to be 60% @ 4 x 4, or 80% @ 5 x 4. Any thoughts? I went with 80% on the bench today because 60% seemed pointlessly light.

1. Deadlift
15 x 45
135 x 8
185 x 6
225 x 5
225 x 5
225 x 5
225 x 5
225 x 4

2. Light Bench
45 x 15
105 x 8
115 x 6
145 x 4
145 x 4
145 x 4
145 x 4

3. Stretch

2014.06.22AM; since my son is away, I needed some “little kid time” so I took my nephew for a hike. It’s amazing what you can bribe a kid to do with Toblerone. We did the Manoa Cliffs hike in a light, misty rain and then he had snacks and I had water.

Later in the day I did pull ups on the rings: 1, 1, 2, 2, 3

Unfortunately, my right knee is fucked up.

So...do we want to know how you hurt your knee?

I hope you're not being gross.

I fucked it up a couple of months back kicking the heavy bag, and I think that the combination of jiu-jitsu and squatting has not helped. It actually flared up just getting out of chair this past week, and now everything is bothering it, including the hiking and deadlifting I did this weekend.

I'd think that 4 sets of 4 at 60% is way too light, probably 80%.

You should be able to do around 20 reps in a single set at a 60% resistance.

Yeah, that's sounds right to me. Unfortunately, our little conversation about squatting may be coming back to haunt me. :)

Ah crap, sorry to hear that.

I like squats for BJJ, but a reasonable weight and a good mix of other exercises (single-leg stuff like lunges, then your leg curls, maybe calves, and a back extension move) seems like a best balance.

The problem, from my perspective, is that I have very limited time to devote to weight training and I want the best bang for my buck. Going down the road of, "just a few more exercises" ends up with me getting stale and losing the desire to do it at all. If I have to do four more exercises just so I can squat, it's better to bag the squats.

Fair enough.

Do you think the hard stretching may have been a culprit?

Bram, it's possible. I think what really started the problem was when I jacked it up kicking the heavy bag, but for sure, it could have aggravated it when I was doing hurdler stretches. With the knee in that bent, loaded position maybe it made things worse. I am going to skip squatting this week and see if I can work things out.

2014.06.23PM; Jiu-Jitsu...watched my fellow instructor test for his first degree on his black belt. I am supposed to do it soon too, maybe when Relson gets back from Russia. We wil see. After that I rolled with R.S. for a bit; we have had some bad blood in the past, so both of us were going light. That said, he is one of our sharpest black belts in the entire association, but I had my moments, and the match ended in a draw.

After that two hour seminar with Relson Gracie covering mount escapes and attacks from north south, including a cool toehold series. Walked to and from the gym.

2014.06.25PM; Jiu-Jitsu...rolled with some kid visiting from the mainland, assisted with class, then bounced out. Even though I stayed off my knee and played entirely from guard, my knee was barking by the end. How utterly lame.
