2014.09.13AM; took my son and some neighborhood kids along with my son's boy scout trip on a 2 hour hike. They were earning their hiking achievement. Later in the day...

1. Overhead Squat 10 x 3 @ empty barbell...holy shoulder stretch...sets on the minute x 10:00
2. Seated Dumbbell Press 10 x 5 @ 2 x 50 lbs...sets on the minute x 10:00
3. Ring Chins 10 x 1...sets on the minute x 10:00

Spent the rest of the day building a trellis for my long squash, making gyōza and drinking sake.

Aloha!

2014.09.15PM; Jiu-Jitsu...rolled for 45 minutes straight, first with another black belt, then when he was tired I switched to a blue belt heavyweight. The first run was pretty much me letting him pass, reestablishing my guard, looking for a sweep or arm bar. In the process he gave me enough of an angle to take the back, and that’s where it ended with okuri-eri-jime.

The blue belt we went for more rounds but generally he was getting the suck end of my paper cutter choke (kata-te-jime), as he kept trying to escape bottom side by scooping his near arm under me to scoot out the back: no bueno. His lips were turning blue by the time we finished; I admired his gameness and willingness to train but I told him it was time to take a break and breathe.

2014.09.17PM; jiu-jitsu...an hour of sparring with a couple of blue belts, me pulling guard or half guard and working from there.

The first guy was your classic middle aged, strong but stiff type. The second was a younger, spry guy, lots of movement but a little skittish to really commit to a sweep or attack. With the first guy I focused on just being patient and taking what he gave me, with the second guy I felt freer to improvise.

2. Kettlebell Swing 10 x 5/5 @ 24 kg x 10:00
3. Two Hand Kettlebell Press 10 x 4 @ 2 x 24 kg x 10:00

2014.09.19PM; jiu-jitsu...taught the Friday self defense class, introducing some new students to working against a firearm. I try to keep it light and interesting and make it clear that you would never, ever, ever want to actually have to use this stuff but it is an interesting and potentially life-saving aspect of our art. Even dating back to the time of samurai, jiu-jitsu has incorporated empty hand work against armed attackers not because it is desirable, but because it is real.

Finished the evening with some fun sparring with a black belt student, and then bounced out for a bacon cheeseburger and a Star Wars marathon with my son.

2014.09.20AM; jiu-jitsu...with the keiki Saturday morning. Both my son and my nephew were actually performing at their best and my son won three straight rolls with a four stripe white belt. I tried to find some rolls when I was done teaching but everybody was drag-ass so I just took the kids for lunch.

2014.09.27PM; jiu-jitsu...morning sesh with the kids, it was fun. My son is actually starting to "get it" and it is fun to see the light going on; still a bunch of thrashing going on but there are moments where you can see him operating a technique as opposed to just struggling. Nephew is still too little understand much, but he is enthusiastic and is getting better at concentrating. Most of the class was getting ready for an upcoming tournament, but there have been a couple of kidnapping attempts in Honolulu, so we spent half an hour on awareness, getting help, and assault prevention.

Afternoon time...heavy thunderstorm weather. This is the type of workout that looks like cake on paper, but is vomit inducing: sets on the minute for an hour straight.

1. Two Dumbbell Press 10 x 10 @ 30 lbs. x 2 x 10:00
2. Two Dumbbell Curl 10 x 10 @ 20 lbs. x 2 x 10:00
3. Two Dumbbell Bench Press 10 x 10 @ 50 lbs. x 2 x 10:00
4. One Dumbbell Bent Row 10 x 10/10 @ 30 lbs. x 10:00
5. Two Dumbbell Lateral Raise 10 x 10 @ 5 lbs. x 2 x 10:00
6. Two Dumbbell Flyes 10 x 10 @ 10 lbs. x 2 x 10:00

Taking my wife to an Okinawan pub tonight for bitter melon and awamori.

2014.09.29PM; jiu-jitsu...spent an hour gently executing two blue belts over and over again. I am basically working to improve my back attacks now; I have always known that I lagged behind in this most important of jiu-jitsu positions and I am enjoying really making a study of it.

The submission I worked today was the armbar from the back when the opponent is defending the choke. I must have hit that submission four or five times, just milking reactions for the set up. You know you have a good setup when you hear an opponent go, "aaarrrgh!" realizing they fell for it AGAIN.

PS - if you haven't seen it, Ryan Hall's Back Attack series is great. It might hold some gems even for a Black Belt.

Hey Johno, probably anyone can learn a ton from Ryan Hall, he's a wealth of jiu-jitsu knowledge. One of the reasons the art can hold a lifetime of fascination is because there are so many different chambers: positions, guards, submissions, sweeps, variations, etc. For me it makes it always new.

2014.09.30PM; a thunderstorm raging outside, continuous sets on the minute for one hour inside...average is one rep every six seconds for an hour.

1. Two Dumbbell Press 10 x 10 @ 30 lbs. x 2 x 10:00
2. Two Dumbbell Curl 10 x 10 @ 20 lbs. x 2 x 10:00
3. Two Dumbbell Bench Press 10 x 10 @ 50 lbs. x 2 x 10:00
4. One Dumbbell Bent Row 10 x 10/10 @ 30 lbs. x 10:00
5. Two Dumbbell Lateral Raise 10 x 10 @ 5 lbs. x 2 x 10:00
6. Two Dumbbell Flyes 10 x 10 @ 10 lbs. x 2 x 10:00

Doesn't look like much, but most folks won't make it through the first ten minutes.

Dunn, that's the "A day" workout for upper body. The "B day" workout for the lower body is as shown on September 28th. The idea is from Jack Lalanne, who would workout with weights for an hour each day, alternating upper and lower body.

2014.10.01PM; jiu-jitsu...didn't have a lot of time to train today, so I just rolled for 45 minutes straight with a decent blue belt. He was on the lighter side, so I focused on playing from guard and taking the back.

2014.10.02PM; lower body, sets on the minute for one hour straight...was sweating like a pig in Tehran. Put the abs first so I wouldn't get tired and bag it at the end.

1. Leg Lift & Toe Touch 10 x 5 x 10:00
2. Overhead Squat 10 x 7 @ broomstick x 10:00
3. Calf Raise 10 x 10 @ bodyweight x 10:00

That is smart, puting abs first.Think that is common for a lot of people (planing on doing abs last and then running out of steam and dropping it.I know I tend to do that).
You`ll toughen up.Unless you have a serious medical condition commonly refered to as
"being a pussy".

2014.10.03PM; jiu-jitsu...taught the Friday self defense class for a small group. Topic was defense against two handed grabs from the front, grasping at the throat or clothing. I finished the night sparring with a large white belt; I always enjoy the unpredictable and wild energy of rolling with beginners who won't response with canned "jiu-jitsu" responses. It can be...surprising, what occurs to some people, but at the same time, the essence of martial arts is learning to harmonize with these wild elements.

2014.10.04AM; jiu-jitsu...Saturday jiu-jitsu with the kids. My nephew tapped out his first opponent; he was pretty roughneck about it, he just got on top of this Hawaiian kid and put his forearm across the kids throat and pressed. But still, the kid is getting it. My son is also going through a growth spurt to the point where he and I can play spar a little more openly than I could in the past. Both those kids are going to be huge, so I might as well get my licks in while I can. :)

No afternoon workout as the evening was spent grilling and pounding waaay to much proseco *shudder*. My best man just moved back to O'ahu from Belfast with his new family, so we were celebrating his prodigal return.
