2014.10.10PM; jiu-jitsu...taught a self-defense class (club defenses) and then some sparring with one of my students. He likes to talk a lot of shit when we roll—in a fun way—and so I started WWF’n on him. Aloha!

2014.10.11AM; jiu-jitsu...took the boys to jiu-jitsu, got in a little rolling at the end. A lot of our kids were competing in the NAGA tournament this weekend, so it was a small group of about eight kids. Last week we had 24, so it’s all relative.

Continuing to polish the blade with respect to back attacks, slowly letting the lessons seep into my bones. It’s interesting the way changes in your game in one position can affect things elsewhere; as an example, knowing you can finish people effectively from the back makes getting there more attractive.

2014.10.12PM; 2 hour hike and then some yardwork in the late afternoon sun, then had the whole clan over for a birthday dinner for my mom: Schweinsbraten, krautsalat, potato dumplings, and a blackberry pie sent down with way too much German wine.

2014.10.14PM; jiu-jitsu...started out sparring with a new guy, a big brother who’s easily a fit 250 lbs. and 6’6”. He’s the kind of guy that every blackbelt hates to train with, huge and athletic, and while he doesn’t know any jiu-jitsu he’s a natural handful with great strength and balance. Even when you win, you won’t look good doing it haha. I understood what I was getting myself into from the get go, but it’s still humbling to realize that even with 18 years of jiu-jitsu, size and strength are still real factors. In my mind I know I need to seek out opportunities to train with guys this size, but I don't often have the chance. That said, he’s a nice guy and has a positive attitude—I already teach his son on Saturday so he felt comfortable with me—and we had some good rolls. Being under him was no joke though, and it gave me a renewed appreciation of what smaller guys who are willing to train with me go through.

Anyway, first few rounds I pulled guard and tried to take his back, but it was tough as he sat so high in my guard I couldn’t easily scale him. That said, I did manage to get out from under him, and once he was on his back he was as helpless as any new student. It was a good illustrative moment, to see how the actual positions themselves provide the power that an individual may lack. I think I ended up subbing him five times: choke from mount, Americana from mount, Americana from side control, kimura from top half, and cross lapel choke from knee on belly. Afterwards I felt like I was hit by a truck, though, so clearly I wasn’t in the condition I should be for beating up big boys.

Rest of the evening was split between a half an hour of self-defense drills against an attack from behind, and taking the back or sweeping from closed guard.

Aloha!

“The strongest of all warriors are these two — Time and Patience.” ― Leo Tolstoy, War and Peace

2014.10.22PM; jiu-jitsu...20+ minutes or so of continuous sparring with a big—280 lbs.—Samoan MMA fighter who is up here getting ready for his third fight. He has a wrestling and kickboxing background, not jiu-jitsu (thank God) or I would have been in deep shit. As it was, I have rarely felt such strength and pressure while rolling. I decided to play the mark, just playing defensively and really making him work for takedowns and establishing positions and then reversing him. The first time I got top position he was able to explode out of it, but the second time he had depleted himself and gave up with a little convincing from your humble servant, Fat Cat.

At 15 years younger and 60 lbs. heavier, I couldn’t really make him do anything, but if ever there was solid proof that “jiu-jitsu works” it’s that it lets a purely average person like me overcome a bigger, stronger, younger athlete with a strategy of time and patience. That said, I felt like I was hit by a fucking truck afterward. He was a really great guy though, very friendly and open; Polynesians tend to be very genuine people. Spent another hour drilling arm bar attacks and mount escapes with him, then walked home in a tropical downpour.

Aloha!

It has taken me years to learn and strategize patience. (Hearing Rickson describe "slow-cooking" a younger partner was a revelation.)
When I'm patient, my partner gives me so many more openings than when I try to force a move.

I have to pick my moments to spar with the big/strong guys. My ego expects me to always be game. Realistically, I should do it pretty infrequently.

To be sure. And that really is a type of inscrutable and inexorable strength; the strength of mountains, glaciers, oceans. Of things that have made up their mind. As someone described me the other day, "a slow hot death."

Yeah. Part of me wanted to respond with, "but I'm the club enforcer..." but fo' realz fuck that ego bullshit. But acceding to my egotism, my attitude as always been (to paraphrase) Bud in Kill Bill Vol. 2: If they want to fight with me, all they gotta do is come down to the club and start some shit, and we'll be in a fight.

I'm rolling that image in my mind.
At my level, I show patience mostly on defense: I have a strong & sticky Half Guard and I'm learning to wait, wait, wait until the moment is right to Take Back or to otherwise reverse. Then it's pretty much mongoose-cobra stuff - probably too scrambly, due to my limited control. Maybe a bit due to my No Gi play. You've got me thinking.

Thanks for the reply!

That so much reminds me of the dojo war days.. at least early 70's before liability. You'd be training and some guys would just show up. Street clothes or whatnot. You'd look at them in the door and say to yourself, "I'll bet I'm going to fight that guy".
