I'm rolling that image in my mind.
At my level, I show patience mostly on defense: I have a strong & sticky Half Guard and I'm learning to wait, wait, wait until the moment is right to Take Back or to otherwise reverse. Then it's pretty much mongoose-cobra stuff - probably too scrambly, due to my limited control. Maybe a bit due to my No Gi play. You've got me thinking.

Thanks for the reply!
Hey johno, how did you end up liking the Billy Robinson video?

That so much reminds me of the dojo war days.. at least early 70's before liability. You'd be training and some guys would just show up. Street clothes or whatnot. You'd look at them in the door and say to yourself, "I'll bet I'm going to fight that guy".
Yeah, this time it worked out in my favor, but to paraphrase someone else on this board: it's best to disengage from outcomes and just do the work.

FC - the video hasn't arrived yet. They warned me that there would be a delay in shipping; I assumed they had to burn another DVD to ship to me...probably don't keep it in stock.

Anyhow, my birthday is in early November, so I'm not worried about it yet. I'll report back in a week or two.

2014.10.28PM; jiu-jitsu...rolled with a the big semi-pro basketball guy for three or four rounds. Last time I had pulled guard and let him have the top to begin with; this time I was a bit more aggressive so he didn’t get the wrong idea so I either took the takedown or used a turtle guard to put him on his back and crush him from there. Like all muscular people, he was very susceptible to bent arm locks.

After that, I assisted a bit with class and then bounced out.

2014.10.29PM; jiu-jitsu...rolled for an hour with a fun blue belt. He's a lighter guy, so I don't play from the top, but get to work on all my "fancy" techniques: rolling entries, back takes to sweeps, reverse triangles, 50/50 attacks, etc. We just sparred continuously for the nearly the full hour.

2014.10.30PM; squat snatches with a very light weight, just trying to get the groove of the movement since I have never been able to do them in the past. Followed that with some sword and buckler fencing with my son and then drinks on the lanai with my bimbo.

2014.11.01AM; jiu-jitsu...everyone was hungover from Halloween but we scraped ourselves together for Saturday morning jiu-jitsu. I could tell my son was tired and cranky, as one might expect from a little kid, but I didn't realize how cranky he was...until he hauled off and smacked some girl that was trying to take the ball he was playing with after class. Normally I take the boys for lunch after class, but that was out, and instead we had a long talk about not hitting girls (unless they ask to be). Live and learn yo.

Later in the day I did the first workout of my November scheme: Peary Rader's old "Press-Chin-Squat" program. I did very light overhead squats as my warm up. What I like about the OHS is that it enforces perfect form and good shoulder flexibility. What I do not like is that when I go "heavy" (for me) it leaves my shoulders feeling pretty beat up. As a compromise, this month I will use it as my warm up exercise, but stick to the regular back squat for the actual training.

1. Press
45 x 10
65 x 2
85 x 2
105 x 2
125 x 2
145 x 2

2. Chins
5 x 2

3. Squats
45 x 12
95 x 5
115 x 5
135 x 5
135 x 5
135 x 5

...for the month of November I will just work to improve those numbers. If I like it, I will try to push through to the end of the year.

Aloha!

2014.11.03PM; jiu-jitsu...rolled with my main competition as a warm up. He was going hard, but knowing I had to teach, I kind of held back a little and let him run. He still wasn’t able to sweep or submit, or really even get any position other than guard on me. At one point we broke contact and both went to the feet, but as I was trying to set my grips for sumi-gaeshi he asked to take a breather.

After that I rolled a bit more with a white belt and then planned the class. Ended the night teaching an hour of Lucas Leite/Bernardo Faria style half guard.

145 x 2
150 x 1

2014.11.08PM; Took the kids to the morning jiu-jitsu class, had the pleasure of promoting a bunch of great kids including my son, who got his second stripe on his white belt. :)

Today is my baby-mama's birthday. From the sounds she was making earlier I think I killed her with the Hitachi Magic Wand and my five fingers of death. She's passed out, so on to the Rader “Press-Chin-Squat” Program – Day 3....warmed up with light Overhead Squats 3 x 10.

1. Press
Empty bar x 10
115 x 5
125 x 4
135 x 3
145 x 2
155 x 1

2. Incline Dumbbell Bench
50s x 10 x 3

3. Chins
2 x 1, 2, 3

4. Squat
115 x 12
135 x 12
135 x 12

Gonna go for drinks with my ladyfriend and then on to Izakaya Gaku for omakase.

Aloha!

2014.11.11PM; jiu-jitsu...rolled with one of our four-stripe brown belts as my pre-funk. He has a very creative, Nino Schembri style, and has particularly good crucifix. I made sure to give him plenty of opportunities to try it out on me and escaped each time, turned the match, and submitted him. We went for a good half an hour and had some great rolls.

Finished up with an hour of guard passing drills and omoplata entries and re-counters. Walked back to my car in the rain.

2014.11.12PM; jiu-jitsu...rolled for an hour with an eager blue belt. In standing position I got a nice hiza-guruma, an ura-nage counterthrow, and a drop single. On the mat I was focusing on getting to the armbar position, then as the opponent escapes, transitioning to the "checkmate" reverse triangle, and also triangles from open guard.

2014.11.17PM; jiu-jitsu...rolled with a decent blue belt for a half an hour or so. I let him burn some energy getting good positions and then worked to turn things around, but generally I played pretty laid back. I will say that the guy did a great job of changing tempos on me, going from a sitting shin-to-shin guard to coming up and wrestling for a takedown if I took the pressure off. It was fun, but I demolished him patiently.

2014.11.18PM; on Big Island, traveling for work. Since no jiu-jitsu, I broke my workout into an upper and lower split for the two days I am away to give me something to do. Also, this was intentionally a "light day" workout since I had hit a heavy (for me) 160 lbs. press on Saturday.

1. Press
Empty bar x 10
115 x 5
125 x 4
125 x 4
125 x 4
125 x 4

2. Incline Dumbbell Bench

3. Chins
2 x 1, 2, 3, 4

2014.11.21PM; jiu-jitsu...back in town, yo. Worked all damned day, got a 40k bonus and a raise, rolled a bit with a couple of white belts, and then taught the Friday self-defense class and went home. I did also have one of the largest classes yet for my teaching, which to be honest, was the most personally gratifying thing that happened today.
