2014.11.28PM; visiting my best man's family at his new home in the Waiʻanae mountains at Palehua. We went for a two family walk in the woods, picking fresh lilikoi, and then back to the house for whiskey, swimming, and hot tub.

2014.12.01PM; jiu-jitsu...rolled with a decently strong blue belt. I wasn't in the mood to be generous so I just repeatedly took him down and submitted him, but he did stage a few very nicely timed bump escapes. Rest of the evening was variations on the São Paulo pass.

2014.12.03PM; jiu-jitsu...an hour of straight rolling, working all rounds from the feet. In takedowns I focused on hiza-guruma and osoto-gari in combination; on the mat I focused on triangles and finishing from the back. I have dropped a few pounds and it shows in a bit quicker footwork.

2014.12.06AM; jiu-jitsu...kids jiu-jitsu in the morning, then this workout in the afternoon. I must admit to a minor change of course for my December workouts. I had originally intended to stick with presses, chins, and squats for the month of December, with the addition of just three sets of bench press. However, when I went to conduct the second workout of this type, I just had that feeling of aversion and decided to break my workout into an A and B format, like so:

A = Presses, Chins, and Squats
B = Bench Presses, Rows, and Deadlifts

So along those lines, my Saturday workout was as follows:

1. Bench Press
145 x 10
155 x 10
165 x 10

2. Bent Rows
105 x 8
115 x 8
125 x 8

3. Deadlifts
135 x 8
185 x 8
205 x 8

4. Alt. Dumbbell Curls
30s x 8
30s x 8
30s x 8

2014.12.07; spent the day in the Wai‘anae Mountains, looking down on Pearl Harbor, felling ironwood trees, chopping them up, and hauling them away. My forearms are blown to shit today from handling a big Stihl chainsaw and axe all day.

Mickey, I couldn't agree more. I was with some of my best friends from childhood, too; we drank cider, blasted heavy metal, and cracked jokes the whole time and it was both productive and enjoyable.

2014.12.09PM; had to go and get a Christmas tree for the family, so no jiu-jitsu until tomorrow...just going for reps on everything, except I knew that my heaviest set of presses would be a bitch. In retrospect, I should have eaten a piece of fruit before this workout as I felt a little flat.

2014.12.10PM; jiu-jitsu...rolled for an hour with a good blue belt, round after round starting from the feet. I hit a beautiful drop seoi-nage that was my "move of the night" but I thought that my performance in general lacked a little bit of its luster; I'm not sure why. At any rate, it was great exercise and a ton of fun, and I left with a big smile on my face. When I left there was a street party going on so I stayed, had a Fernet, and watched the girls go by in a zenlike state of tranquility.

2014.12.12PM; Jiu-jitsu...taught the Friday self-defense class, finishing a fight from the mounted position. We went through the GM Helio Gracie classic: collar choke > Americana > armbar first. Then, we took on Rickson’s “gift wrap” evolution of the back take to mata leao finish. Finally, we talked about how to use these positions to strike effectively. Finished up sparring with a senior black belt and then called it a night.

I was pretty low-energy all weekend, so I deferred an afternoon workout or hike in favor of an evening out with my best man drinking craft cocktails. I with the Manhattans, he with the Old Fashioneds; I was the last man standing.

2014.12.14PM; December B.3...as supposed to be the "A" workout but a cold wind was whipping rain through the trees and NFW was I going outside and doing pull-ups in that so I did the "B" workout instead. Always striving for more reps right now, weight takes a back seat to reps.
