11.11.14

Armistice Day, growing up in a service family and having family who have served in nearly every major and minor conflict since WWI it was nice to remember the sacrifices made by these great men and women.

BJJ open mat, 3x30 min rolls hard work with a blue and two purples, my half guard sucks as does my defence from north south, but this is the reason why we train.

Not much time today, busy bouncing place to place managed to squeeze this in about a 15 minute gap while dinner cooked.

Hey Ed, Life is crazy, keeping things on an even keel is a daily challenge, but what is life without a challenge to be honest its been a shitty year, but there are people worse off than me so I try and stay positive.

Thanks for asking, belated congrats on the blue belt!

14/11/14

Jiu jitsu, I was asked to demonstrate a sweep I do when the opposition is passing with pressure, its a little like a tornado guard sweep, but requires less flexibility. its not something I have put much thought into teaching as its something I do naturally and I use a few variations depending on what the opposition does.

15/11/14

1. Suspended lunges 4 x 10/10
2. Pushups 4 x 10
3. Suspended row 4 x 10
4. Jungle gym hip thrust 2 x 10
5. Band push down and curls 2 x 20 for both

Jump Stretch for 10 mins or so.

Thanks man,

17/11/14

1. Press 20kg bell 4 x 5/5
2. Pullup 4 x 4
3. Goblet Squats 24kg 6 x 5
4. Cleans 24kg 4 x 5/5
5. Swings 24kg 5 x 20

Jumpstretch work 10 mins, mainly lower body stuff.

Jiu Jitsu, mount escape to butterfly and xguard followed by 2 nice simple sweeps, 5x5 minute rounds to finish, nothing to note other than a nice spar with a fellow purple belt, felt on point with my pacing tonight.

18//11/14

Jiu Jitsu, open mat rolled for an hour with our resident miyao bro, a visiting white and a blue belt, I played guard its something I am working heavily on along with basic top position chokes from mount, the guard stuff is fun, the mount stuff is frustrating, its probably the most frustrating position in jiu jitsu for me, which is why I am trying hard to stay only on mount and finish with a choke, its too easy for me to transition to the back and side control once the going gets tough.

Tomorrow I am experimenting with two training sessions in a day I can do it if I skip rolling in one session, my body cant take rolling twice in one day, what a pussy I have turned into.

Could you do one roll & one flow-roll? A flow-roll requires the right partner, and shouldn't be too stressful.

Yeah its something worth considering but like you say it requires the right person, for now I am going to build up slowly with drilling.

19/11/14

Despite talking about 2 classes I only managed to get to one today, 2 classes is still on the agenda though:

Jiu Jitsu, class was mainly beginners today so the professor went over the scissor sweep and with some added variations for the upper belts who were there, rolled 5x5 min rounds I persisted with my mount control, cross lapel choke is the only thing I want from mount, its hard, fun and rewarding to have such a narrow focus.

Bodyweight day:

1. Jungle gym lunge 4 x 10/10
2. Banded good mornings 4 x 10
3. Pushups 3 x 10
4. Jungle gym row 3 x 10
5. band push downs 2 x 20
6. kettlebell curls using a towel 2 x 10

20/11/14

Open mat, drilled lasso guard passing for an hour and a half, drilling is work if you put the right intensity in.

In the evening I did a carry based workout various carries with KB's waiters, rack, farmers and bear hug with the sandbag.

21/11/14

Jiu Jitsu, class was on guard retrieval, and guard pass prevention. rolled 4 x 5 min rounds felt good despite having sore elbows.

Forgot to add I cycled 40 mins today hilly route nice chill in the air too.

No workout today elbows are a little tender, see how I feel tomorrow.

21/11/14

Jiu jitsu, drilled some open half guard, nice choke and hip switch sweep, rolled 4 x 5 min rounds

22/11/14

Jiu jitsu, I was asked to cover the class, went over classic head inside single, gi snapdown and a double under guard pass, 20 mins coward sparring, lots of cardio involved in this high tempo throughout.

24/11/14

Bell work:

1. 20kg clean and press 4 x 5/5
2. Neutral grip chins 4 x 5
3. Goblet squat 20kg 4 x 10
4. Swings 20kg 5 x 20

Did this whilst cooking dinner.

Jiu jitsu, escaping mount to butterfly/x guard finished with a sweep. specific sparring, finish from the mount or escape, already in a short time of focusing on mount I can feel an improvement after many years of convincing myself mount wasn't for me. full sparring to finish - good class.

Open mat, rolled for an hour with our little miyao bro traded sweeps passing is a nightmare with him, I dont like using to much pressure as he is 20kg lighter than me and I would rather explore the possibilities, this doesnt mean he doesnt kick my butt.

club warm up maxwell complex 3 x 20/20

1. Jungle gym lunges 4 x 10/10
2. Pushups 4 x 10
3. Jungle gym row 4 x 10
4. Swings 24kg 5 x 20
5. Band curls and press downs 2 x 20

I don't normally post this but I normally cycle to the academy if I attend day classes its only about 3 mile but its very hilly both ways.

Jiu jitsu, class was on sit up guard sweeps and transitions, was good stuff I only drilled during the day, saved the sparring for the night class.

Evening jiu jitsu, carried on the sit up guard drills and sweeps, rolled 4 x 6 min rounds to finish, rolled with my purple belt Nemesis, he always seems to know how to kill my game, good stuff, other rounds where good, continuing my exploration of mount.

Jiu Jitsu, more sit up guard, sweeps and transitions good stuff 4 x 5 min rounds, more mount madness loving the process of discovering mount I have avoided it for to long in favour of the back.

1. Press 24kg 3 x 5
2. Ring chins 3 x 5
3. Goblet squat 24kg 2 x 10
4. Clean 24kg 3 x 5/5
5. H2H swing 24kg 4 x 25

Consistency is the key, not a lot of weight or volume or even intensity but its better than nothing.

Lower body mobility circuit followed by some jumpstretch work

Jiu jitsu, continuing with the sit up guard work, flowing into shin to shin guard, 4 x 6' rounds project mount continues always looking for the cross lapel choke.

09/12/14

Open mat, rolled for an hour with various partners and various intensities.

10/12/14

1. Suspended lunges 5 x 10/10 (will be adding weight soon, last set fighting I was fighting for balance)
2. Pushup 4 x 10 ( once these get to 5 x 10 weighted vest will be added - I use a moderately slow tempo)
3. Row 4 x 10
4. Swings @20kg 4 x 25

Have four jiu jitsu classes over the next 2 days so anything I add will be minimal, I have only trained once this week so I am itching for some mat time.

Morning class I took the class it was very quiet only two white belts there, I went over using the overhook from closed guard and how it can be used, gi nogi and self defence, showed some sensible sequences and sparred a little at the end.

Evening open mat, rolled for an hour and half with no rest, various partners and various intensities hit some nice sweep and was complemented on my top pressure being suffocating.

13/12/14

Band warm up

1. Clean and press 24kg 4 x 5/5
2. Neutral grip chin 4 x 3
3. Goblet squat 24kg 3 x 10
4. Swing 20kg 4 x 25
5. Neck work

Jiu jitsu, class was on guard pass prevention using some new drills, this was followed by some nice open guard sweeps. Solid sparring to finish, mount mission continues!
