Kenny X's Down-On-The-Bayou Training Journal

Post by Kenny X » Sat Jun 06, 2015 5:16 pm

Image

Kenny X is publishing his training regimen right here at The Bad Place for his friends to enjoy and scrutinize.

Kenny X is a visionary and a beacon of hope for motherfuckers who aspire to live on the bayou, to not become the BJJ Blue Belts who end up with their pictures on the back of a milk carton, to choke-out alligators for fun -and then eat them, to enjoy life, to cook amazing food, and to #TrainForLife.

Here's today's update:

SATURDAY (REST DAY):

1. TGU's- None, because his right rear deltoid hurts and feels a little unstable after training BJJ at the tail end of last week.

2. Bottoms-Up Cleans- 16 kg. x 5 (R,L)

3. Yoga- :30 Restorative Vinyasa Flow

Thank you kindly! There'll be lots of Krazyballs, Jiu Jitsu and humor, along with lots of push-ups and pull-ups; with food porn and recipes thrown-in, and of course, much referring to myself in the third-person.

SUNDAY (EASY DAY):

1. TGU's- None. Kenny X's right shoulder still feels fucky.

2. Bottoms-Up Cleans- 16 kg. x 5 (R,L)

3. KB Snatch Intervals- 16 kg. @ :13, 20 seconds on / 20 seconds off, 18 RPM (9R, 9L)

Good, easy, post-morning baby-making maneuvers training session while The Future Mrs. Kenny X cooked breakfast. Kenny X feels virile, vigorous and potent, and ready for more baby-making this afternoon/evening, and for KB's and BJJ this week.

MONDAY (SHOULDERS):

1. Windmills- 16 kg. x 2 x 10 (R,L)

2. Bottoms-Up Cleans- 16 kg. x 5 (R,L)

3. OALC- 24 kg. x 2 x 9,9 (R,L)

4. Push-Ups & Pull-Ups- 1 x 6,8,10,12,14,16 + 1,2,3,4,5,6

5. Yoga- :30 Regular Vinyasa Flow

Kenny X is substituting Windmills in place of TGU's for a while, for his shoulder.

Kenny X is doing OALC stuff for the time being. No eye on time, he's just gonna add reps each time and see what happens.

Kenny X has to work until 7 or 8 o'clock tonight it turns out, because the schedule for the Disaster Recovery Exercise he volunteered to help with at work, which was supposed to happen this Saturday and Sunday, was actually scheduled for today, tomorrow, Thursday and Friday, and he'll be stuck on a teleconference all evening and thus, he'll miss Jiu Jitsu. That's a fucking bummer, man. He'll make Advanced BJJ later this week though.

Right shoulder felt less fucky, today.

Left inner-elbow hurts from the Kimura he got caught in last week after making a rookie mistake with a crazy, bloodthirsty White Belt who's been attending classes twice a day, six days a week, every week, since 2014. Kenny X wants to emulate that guy.

Good day of training today.

WEDNESDAY (HARD SNATCH):

1. Windmills- 16 kg. x 2 x 10 (R,L)

2. Bottoms-Up Cleans- 16 kg. x 5 (R,L)

3. KB Snatch Intervals- 24 kg. @ :5, 20 seconds on / 20 seconds off, 14 RPM (7R, 7L)

4. Push-Ups & Pull-Ups- 5 x 10,5

5. Yoga- :15 Regular Vinyasa Flow

Kenny X started doing the Snatch Intervals with the heavy bell on HARD SNATCH Day, with the new interval :20 on / :20 off. He was doing 20 minutes, :15 on / :15 off with the 16 kg LIKE A BOSS, but today's work with the increased work time and heavier weight smoked his ass. WOW. 6 minutes next time.

Push-Ups and Pull-Ups felt good today. Kenny X would do a set of 10 and then grab the bar and do a set of 5, then rest for :30 and repeat.

Nice session today.

THURSDAY (THE PUPS ARE DOGGIN' IT):

1. Windmills- 16 kg. x 3 x 10 (R,L) ... Kenny X's right rear deltoid feels great!

2. Bottoms-Up Cleans- 0, none, zip, zilch, bupkis (but that's okay)

3. Goblet Squats- 24 kg. x 5

4. Swings- 24 kg x 10 x 16, rest :40

5. Cleans- 24 kg x 5 x 5,5 (R,L), rest :30

Kenny X will be working until probably 9 or 10 tonight, swamp time. So no BJJ or Yoga. But there'll be plenty of beer and leftover jambalaya when he signs off, though.

FRIDAY (EASY DAY):

1. Windmills- None! Kenny X's right rear-deltoid feels even better, today, so Kenny X decided to rest it some more with the hopes it'll feel tip-top come next week!

2. Bottoms-Up's- 16 kg x 1 x 5 (R, L)

3. Push-Ups- BW x 32, 10, 5, 2

4. Pull-Ups- BW x 1 x 4

Kenny X did this training session right after rolling out of bed, and signing-on to work. The reason for his weaksauce showing with the push-ups and pull-ups is his sore-as-all-Hell left inner-elbow, which flared up real badly overnight while Kenny X slept on it wrong. On rep 3 of the pull-ups Kenny X exclaimed "OOOOUCH!" prompting The Soon-To-Be Mrs. Kenny X to fuss him, saying- "If it hurts that's your body telling you not to do it! And I know it's your elbow because of the way you said 'OOOOUCH!' ... We had a discussion, during which time TS2BMKX reasoned with Kenny X and convinced him that a trip to the Doctor's office is in order. He'll set that up for early this-coming week.

Kenny X is happy with how this week's training went. He'll be adding minutes to his Snatch Intervals, reps to his OALC, push-ups and pull-ups, and sets to his swings this-coming week. As for tomorrow, however, well tomorrow is another Glorious Rest Day, and he plans on making Crawfish Étouffée -photos and recipe for Bobby forthcoming.

Thankya kindly ma friend. Kenny X appreciates the good word!

And speaking of being a coon-ass, here's a quick lesson in Cajun English for ya!

(turning off the third-person speaking) ... I was confused the first time I heard the use of the phrase "get down" by Cajun folks. In contrast, Pittsburgh English (Pittsburghese) was fairly easy to get my head around. Cajun English, however, isn't so easy. The use of the phrase "get down," in particular, tripped me up.

Here is an example:

Kenny X: "I'm going to Adrien's to buy beer real quick. Would you like to come along and keep me company?"

The Soon-To-Be Mrs. Kenny X: "Sure my baby, I'll go for a ride with you and keep you company, but I'm not gonna get down."

KX (assuming she meant that she has no interest in dancing at the supermarket): "Huh?"

TS2BMKX: "Oh! Ha! I'm not getting out of the car, is what I meant there."

KX (puzzled): "The fuck!?"

TS2BMKX: Giggling...

Here's why and how it works. In the olden days places in Acadiana were spread-out you know, just like in a lot of other place I suppose, and you had to go places on horseback to get there in a timely manner. Well, you'd get down off your horse whenever you had reached your stated destination and the Cajun folks added that phrase to their vernacular. Therefore, it's perfectly logical for a Cajun person to say "I'm gonna get down at Adriens to pick up some groceries" and that phrase is widely used, down here at home on the Bayou.

Cajun English is an interesting thing.

SUNDAY (IMPROMPTU YOGA DAY):

1. Yoga: 90 min. practice with Lacey

Exciting training diversion happened today!

The Soon-To-Be Mrs. Kenny X got an update from her friend Lacey on Facebook last night, saying that she was holding a practice at Yoga Garden, today. Lacey is a brilliant Yoga teacher, and she was holding a practice there, for donations, so that she can go on on a trip to learn from a teacher she really likes. Kenny X has taken Lacey's classes before and enjoyed them, so we went, and it was great!

Back to the grind tomorrow.

MONDAY (SHOULDERS):

1. Windmills- 24 kg. x 1 x 5 (R,L)

2. Bottoms-Up Cleans- 16 kg. x 6 (R,L)

3. OALC- 24 kg. x 2 x 11,11 (R,L) + 24 kg x 1 x 8,8 (R.L)

4. Push-Ups & Pull-Ups- 1 x 8,10,12,14,16,18,20 + 2,3,4,5,6,7,8

5. Yoga- :15 minute restorative

Kenny X has to work late again, tonight. Kenny X will be tied-up in crazy workdays from now until he goes on vacation next Thursday. Kenny X doesn't care about that, though. He's just trying to get some solid training in. 2 reps were added onto the main OALC sets, and they felt great. Another set of 8's followed that up, and that was a good move. It allowed Kenny X to actually practice a Clean & Jerk with less energy and thus, less of a tendency to muscle-fuck-push-press the weight up. Felt even better. More work was added to the Push X Pull as well, and though the elbow still hurts like a bitch, it held up.

Good day of training today.

Also, this one's for bobby, DWM, and anybody ale who either likes to cook, or has a wife of girl/boy friend who likes to cook for them!

This here's Kenny X's first attempt at Crawfish Étouffée ya'll, which he cooked for TS2BMKX, on Saturday night. Kenny X used renown Cajun Chef Justin Wilson's recipe, which he has copied for you at the bottom of this post.

Here is the finished product, which is served with a cup of rice, and champagne, as well as Kenny X's favorite local brew- Parish Brewery's Canebrake (a tasty wheat beer).

Image

Here is a look inside of Kenny X's Super-Manly, Totally ALPHA-AS-FUCK, Elite Refrigerator. Included is eggs, beer, chicken, crawfish tails, more beer, champagne, etc:

Image

And here's Justin Wilson's Crawfish Étouffée recipe:

CRAWFISH ETOUFFEE

Eight servings

Preparation time: 45 minutes

Cooking time: 1 hour and 10 minutes

1 pound butter or margarine

5 1/2 pounds chopped onions

4 cups chopped green bell peppers
4 cups parsley, stems removed, chopped

1 tablespoon Louisiana hot sauce (or 1/2 teaspoon Tabasco)

2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce

4 teaspoons salt (adding 1 teaspoon at a time to taste)

2 tablespoons lemon juice

5 to 6 pounds live or partly cooked whole crawfish (Or just crawfish tails, that works just fine too. -Kenny X)

1. Put butter into very large heavy-bottomed stockpot; melt over medium heat. (Use crawfish fat if you have it.) Add onions, peppers, parsley, hot sauce and Worcestershire sauce. Stir in 1 teaspoon salt and lemon juice. Simmer, covered, stirring often, for 1 hour. (This will make its own juice.)

2. Taste and adjust seasonings, adding more salt if necessary. Add the crawfish. Cook, covered, until crawfish turn red and tail meat is cooked through, about 10 to 20 minutes. Let cool slightly.

When I come to life I'll suck the air so deep now.
That will be my first breath.
I'm gonna cut my strings and kill the puppeteer now.
Then I'll walk on out of here.
I'll make sure nothing happens here.
Follow all those fingers pulling me.

THURSDAY (HARD SNATCH):

1. Windmills- 24 kg. x 1 x 6 (R,L)

2. Bottoms-Up Cleans- 16 kg. x 6 (R,L)

3. KB Snatch Intervals- 24 kg. @ :7, 20 seconds on / 20 seconds off, 14 RPM (7R, 7L)

4. Push-Ups- 5 x 12

5. Pull-Ups- 3 x 6

6. Advanced BJJ tonight

7. Yoga tonight will be restorative, post-Jits

Kenny X is logging his AM KB and Bodyweight workout, and also logging his plans for forthcoming PM Advanced Jits and Yoga on here because when he gets home tonight from Jits he's not gonna want to get on the computer... \:D/ \:D/ \:D/

Kenny X's left inner-elbow is killing him, today. Dr's appointment forthcoming.

Kenny X's AM training session was still good, despite his left inner-elbow. Two minutes were added to the Hard Snatch Intervals, using the 24 kg bell, and it felt good. It felt like work, but it felt good none the less. Kenny X is shooting for 9 minutes, next time. Slowly building up and moving along.

Kenny X will be able to get off work on time, today, which means he can go train Jits. He's looking forward to the mat time, and he's not looking forward to how his elbow will feel. He's just gonna be mindful of it, keep it in the "special place," and remind his training partners to be mindful of it, too. They're all good guys, even the bloodthirsty white belts, so it should be fine.

Yoga will happen after that.

Good KB training today, looking forward to good Jits tonight.

Left inner-elbow hurts like a bitch this morning. It always hurts in the morning, these days. Yesterday's pull-ups left it real sore.

Kenny X feels like it's time for an agonizing re-appraisal of the whole scene...

1. Pull-Ups irritate Kenny X's left inner-elbow the worst.

2. The Jerk part of OALC irritate Kenny X's left inner-elbow the least, but still irritate it.

3. The KB Clean irritates Kenny X's left inner-elbow intermittently, as does pummeling.

4. Kenny X cannot post hard on his left arm without pain.

5. Snatches with the 24 kg kettlebell, with the left hand are manageable but they leave the left inner-elbow sore afterward, as well.

6. Push-ups can be managed if they are done slowly.

Kenny X has been running various iterations and variants of the Snatch Interval-based program for the past three and a half months before he started logging it here. Though he's pleased with his progress, he feels that he ought to hit the pause button on it, and work in something else for a little while while he sorts-out his elbow.

The Soon-To-Be Mrs. Kenny X, while massaging his aching, hard-as-concrete trapezius, his knotted-up shoulders and his fucked-up elbow last night, reasoned with him about this, saying thus:

"Baby, maybe you just need to rest and not do anything for 6 weeks... but I know that's not gonna happen."

No, it sure isn't going to happen. Training must continue.

But TS2BMKX is an intelligent woman, and her words must not fall on deaf ears. She cares for Kenny X, and his well-being is very important to her. And if there's one thing Kenny X knows about women who care about you, it's this:

Never, EVER make them feel like you're not listening to them, and never, EVER make them feel like you don't value their opinion. And it is also helpful if they know how much you appreciate them.

Kenny X pondered her advice, and asked her, "Well, we both know that Kenny X won't cease all training for 6 weeks. But what if Kenny X trained in such a way as to allow his elbow to rest, for 6 weeks?"

TS2BMKX heartily agreed with this.

Here's what Kenny X can do with minimal or entirely without elbow pain:

1. Swings (without elbow pain)

2. Goblet squats (minimal elbow pain)

3. Slow push ups (minimal elbow pain)

4. Slow Chaturanga Dandasana to Upward, then Downward Dog (minimal elbow pain)

For the movements with minimal elbow pain, if a sleeve is worn over the elbow, the pain is further reduced. And Kenny X thinks that there could be some therapeutic value in moving through that range of motion, with the elbow compressed in a sleeve as long as the movements are slow and controlled. The only time the arms are fully extended and load-bearing is the Downward Dog, but for whatever reason, the pain isn't as bad as when Kenny X is getting up off his back and posting on the mat ... Only God knows why.

Kenny X discussed these things with TS2BMKX, and she thinks that that crazy-ass 10,000 swing protocol that Dan John dreamed-up would work perfectly.

To begin, it'd break-down like this:

Day 1:
Swings and Chaturanga to Down and Up Dog

Day 2:
Swings and Goblet Squats

Day 3:
Swings and Chaturanga to Down and Up Dog

Day 4:
Swings and Goblet Squats

Etc.

And at the end of each training week, elbow can be re-assessed, for consideration of swapping-in the Kettlebell Press into the ancillary between-set exercise rotation.

This, while working on rehabbing my elbow.

TS2BMKX also supports Kenny X's returning to Jits after our vacation, as long as he works on his elbow rehab, sticks to his 10,000 swings program, and as long as he and his training partners remain mindful of his elbow. Kenny X has to change his game up to protect his left elbow better, too, and that can be worked-out. Kenny X's Professor knows all about this and supports him in this, too, and he can help as well.

Seems like a good idea. Use this as an opportunity to take on a new challenge, while getting better.

Kenny X will try this out later today and report back.

I was taught to work an injured joint as much as possible (high reps) in all the ways that cause no pain. It has worked for me... So I am on board with The Kenny X and The S2BMKX on this.

Also, Mississippi/Louisiana hot tamales applied to the belly and injured area are the tits.

Thank you, fellas! I appreciate The Good Word here, on this.

I'm actually really stoked about this idea, which is great because I was feeling really, really shitty yesterday, because of this. It sucks being off the mat a few months, then coming back, feeling good, shit, feeling GREAT, and then BOOM! Really fucking bad Golfer's Elbow from being silly and not tapping early, and then fucking making it a whole lot worse by trying to make my arms get super-swole with lots of pull-ups. I was really feeling down about it last night when The Soon-To-Be Mrs. Kenny X and I apoke about it.

But I'm glad we talked about it, and I'm stoked about doing this new program. I feel a lot better mentally.

I'll be taking a few days off, just doing my Reatorative Yoga stuff (since I haven't had a Deload since the week I moved here two months ago), and then I'll start it up during my vacation this coming week.

Kenny X is pretty stoked.
