We Got it from Here...Thank You 4 Your Service

PM

12kg half snatch - 22 minutes switch on the minute

Later evening - Two 12 minute easy mobility sessions.

----
Maybe I should have titled the training log Here We Go Again, because here we go again.

Current Status: recovering.

Some bad choices, dietary and training, along with those mid life things of added work responsibilities, personal stresses, family responsibilities, etc. led to a bit of crash.

I am coming off a longer phase of heavy (for me), short sessions (think anywhere from 10 to 15 minutes). At one point it was frequent with a lot of walking. But then it went from 6 sessions a week to two..with no walking.

Weight has gone up, kind of crashed, and now feeling like complete crap.

So....rebuilding the cardio base. Rotating half snatches, one arm long cycle, and mixing in heavy-hand shadow box sessions.

When I re-started, I was in terrible shape. 6 minutes, switching on the minute, gassed me. But I've taken it slow, adding 2 minutes here when I can.

We will see where this takes me...but I need to rebuild.

Wednesday 11/30/16

PM

16kg 1 arm long cycle - 26 minutes, switch on the minute

later evening - two 12 minute mobility sessions

------

Notes -
I felt my best years and years ago when I was a running machine. I could run easily and forever. Right now, I cannot run. I am out of shape and too heavy. I need something that can be my cardio and I want something I can do at home.

So for me, the KB work is simply cardio. It is me replicating running. Instead of going out for a run, I am just doing these extended sessions, switching on the minute. I am going to just keep adding time where I can until I get to 50 minutes. That is the goal at least.

It is just cardio. Not sport. Not anything. Just cardio.

Right now the weights are fine. The goal isn't weight, reps, whatever. The goal is to build up to 50 minutes working at an appropriate level. What does that mean for me? The heart beats, I sweat, and breathing gets deeper, but if I keep calm and concentrate I can control the breathing and the reps.

Boring? For me no more boring than anything else other than being outside. My rowing machine computer/monitor thing is broken. I don't have an exercise bike. Maybe there are better things out there than long sets with the KB. But whatever. I am not looking for perfect. I am looking for cardio.

Mobility - in the evening I am taking some time to get some basic mobility work in. Twice each night. Once after dinner, once before bed. Simple stuff. Joint mobility. Some breathing work. Squatting. That type of thing. Each time (I have a set routine I do) takes about 12 minutes.

Starting to feel a bit better. Not sure exactly what happened for everything to crash. But I am breathing a bit easier and more deeply now. Last night was the first night in forever I slept well. Digestion is better. Again, along with sleeping, last night was the first night in a while as well that the stomach felt settled and not like it was at war with me.

Mind is feeling a bit more stable. Less chaotic. Along with all this is a stronger focus on being present, recognizing stress and breathing through it.

AM

Way of Energy, Standing Wu Chi - 5:00

Late PM

one 12 minute mobility session
--
Running a tournament at my school the next two nights. With commute this puts it at two, fourteen hour days. It is all for the children...but I am not going to be doing any working out tonight or friday.
--
You have to sometimes look forward. Other times you look back. Right now I am looking back to when I felt the best, the practices that seemed to give me the most. And by most, I just mean that subjective sense of health and well being. One practice that always seemed to give was/is qigong.

For the past few weeks I've been flirting with it, but at some point you have to put a ring on the finger and commit. Going to try and start getting back up early and doing my qigong. Using The Way of Energy and I am starting from the beginning. Five minutes until it is a habit and then I will increase the time.
--
I felt really good today. Well rested. Good energy levels. Breathing is deep. Body feels right. Like things are back on the right track. Slept great again last night. Woke up feeling good.

Finished running this tournament at my school. Things like this put me at a fourteen hour days. Two in a row are tough. But as said, it is all for the children.

Another night with good sleep. Another day feeling good.

I have not put this down yet, but what I am calling my "crash" was kind of an eye-opener for me. I have always felt healthy. Yes, I always carried too many pounds. But I have good energy. I generally feel really good. I move well. I have endurance. I glow. All that stuff. But stress (in all it's forms) left my general well being, mental, physical, and yes spiritual, wrecked. Sleep, digestion cracked. My general sense of well being, normally positive, was wrecked.

A few points I am taking away from all this....

The intersection of mind and body matters. There are times when life and all that word encompasses can be overwhelming. But a lot of time it is not really what is happening so much as how you are allowing yourself to get caught up in the interpretation of what is happening. Are these things really stressful? Or are you just buying into the story that they should be stressful?

Mind matters.

But body matters as well. There are practices that I know leave me feeling better. Cardio....movement...qigong (whatever that is)...yoga.....etc.....

Why not just do those things? Why choose a path that I know takes more than it gives?

Ego.

Early AM

Mobility Work 12:00
Way of Energy Wu Chi - 5:00

--

I was hoping to get in a longer cardio session today, heavy hands shadow boxing. But a we had an early Sunday thing going, combo work/school/daughter/social thing, and after went to brunch with the accompanying few drinks. By the time we got home I figured I could either train or have some beer. I chose beer.

I am going to put a lot of focus on creating a consistent standing practice. The benefits bridge the physical and mental realms of life. When you are standing, and it is hard, and the way to get through it is not to gut it out but to relax into it.....well that is the type of thing that is going to carry over into life. Right now it is only five minutes (well, I am actually going six, but whatever). So I am sinking deep into the stance. The legs do start to burn a bit. But rather than just power through, you have to actively attempt to slow the breathing and relax the body and let go of it in the mind. That is the only way to get through.

I found myself a couple of times today feeling a sense of tension and anxiety, but I almost reflexively tried to relax my way through it.

Another week finished.

Right now I am relaxing. I am having an excellent oatmeal stout from a local brewery. I am reading some graphic novels.

Life is good.

Things are going well. Feeling good. Actually, feeling great.

Adding a bit of stretching to the mobility routine, and ending the whole thing with a plank.

Resisting the urge to add time/weight/ to the KB work right now. Want to spend some more time letting 30 minutes get easier.

Heavy Hands shadowboxing - 50:00

Got off early from work and had extra time. Decided to do a bit longer session of hh shadowboxing. I don't have a hr monitor right now (one is on the way) so I don't really have a way of quantifying the effort level. I have a feeling it is a higher heart rate than the cardiac output 120-130 zone. I am breathing pretty heavy by the end.

Whatever. I'm not stressing about it.

Going out tonight so this is it for today.

Rowing - 15:00
HH shadow box - 15:00

Way of energy, wu chi - 10:00

---

pulled out the old concept 2 and dusted it off. The computer is broken. All I know is I did fifteen minutes. Did not want to push the time. Let the body/knees get used to it. Once the HR monitor is in my plan will be to just log minutes in the 120-140 zone.

Did my standing after. I woke up feeling like I was ran over by a herd of donkeys and it took me a few hours and gallons of coffee to get going.

PM

20kg 1 arm long cycle - 6:00, switch on the minute
16kg complex x 2 (put bell down between complex)
----

Felt like mixing it up a bit so went with the 20kg for LC. (might as well start getting the tendons/ligaments adapted). To get in some more conditioning I ran through my KB complex. I love this complex I am putting it into the rotation. It is, without setting the bell down:
cleans 10/10
1 arm jerk 10/10
half snatch 10/10
1 arm long cycle 10/10

So that's 10 cleans right, 10 cleans left, 10 jerks right, 10 jerks left, etc. etc.

What I love about this one is you can use it as a long set. Set the timer for 30 minutes and keep going without putting it down. I didn't do that. I put it down when I was done and then did it one more time. But if I ever wanted to get in a REALLY long set this is the format I would work in.
