What's up Kenny, good to have you back. Are you no longer doing BJJ, or are you just switching to kali due to the gyms being closed?

Fat Cat,

I’m actually training *both* but BJJ is on hiatus due to lockdown. School will be open again soon though at which time my grappling will resume.

I found Kali last Fall, crash-landed with a great teacher (Mr. Danny Terrell) under Tuhon Rob from PTI and have been thoroughly enjoying myself with it. So I’m doing that too!

*...I’ve been working a lot of Doble stuff lately, as that’s the curriculum I’m learning and preparing to test on. And I figure, one good way to improve might be to break-down the Dirty Dozen and other Doble drills I’ve been doing, pull each idea out and drill each one solo, individually, and iron-out any kinks. Good way to focus on each strike and get good reps in as well as good practice for executing these strikes while doing the footwork. It’s also good for focusing on power generation, as well as other things like discerning which ideas can occur when bringing the stick back to the chamber, for example:

When striking with a #2, a good way to re-chamber the stick would be to execute a #9 thrust. This necessitates stopping the stick on the follow-through, rotating the hand slightly to get the stick into position, and executing the thrust. Another way to do it would be to swing all the way through, returning the stick to the #1 chamber position, and then letting the stick orbit your head, and there you go, back in the #2 chamber. I mix these up as I go, as an exercise in altering what I’m doing in subtle ways “on command” with conscious thoughts. I have to slow down to do that, but I believe I can build up the speed of strikes -and of thought commands- with practice.

Sometimes it’s good to go back, simplify, and work the basics 😆

I have been slacking on Yoga here and there. How hard can it be to do some Sun Salutations and stretches every day for the sake of mobility? Hard for me. I get going real good and then lose it. SO, I’ve started laying out my mat in my office and every time I leave the office I do a Sun Salutation and some stretching, and every time I come back I do the same thing. Maybe if I just do that and make it automatic that’ll be better. We’ll see.

All exercises performed outside in the hot sun and humid Gulf Coast air.

1. 16 kg x 5 x 10
Kali:

My new Kamagong (iron wood) sticks came in the mail today, so I worked out with them. They’re much heavier than rattan, and way more dense. You could do some serious damage with them. I was actually getting some lactic acid going in my arms when I was training with them, which is cool.

Focused on good body mechanics for power generation with the Kali and heavy sticks today. Footwork was practiced during active rest between KB Snatch sets.

Roadwork:
1. AM Walk: 00:20:00
Kali:
1. Dirty Dozen: x 50 for all 12 techniques

3. Upper 8 “B” Espada Y Daga style with Broken Triangles footwork: 150 strikes

5. Seguidas Set 1, #2: x 10 R, L
6. Carenza Espada Y Daga style: 00:15:00

1. SSDD

Today’s weapons were the Kamagong sticks and the training knife. I would like to work up to 100 reps for all of the 12 techniques in the Dirty Dozen with my Kamagong sticks. Once there, I’ll switch to using baseball bats and reset the count goal, which my classmate Marc Aymond suggests. Dirty Dozen is a good collection of techniques which you can use as a warmup, and in doing so it keeps your body tuned-up nicely for Kali practice.

Taking away a stick and using a dagger instead was a nice way to refresh the practice and expand my knowledge of these techniques and their applicability. It was easy to get stoked about training today when I decided to use a dagger in place of one of the sticks. Made me engage my mind more.

Good session today.
