How do you avoid straining your collateral ligaments during those?

That movement in my program is called the Crocodile. Short and long. The series of movements is progressive and you develop the mobility in the hips. Knees are escape valves for the hips so the weakest link,.. the knee ligaments, can take the stress if you don't approach it with proper gradient.
The worse scenario is an instructor who is particularly gifted in the area setting the bar high with stupid human tricks. Then those less gifted try the advanced stuff and get hurt.

Good video clip, thanks for the post.

In fact, I think this is actually a better "teaching" video than many other sources on the subject.

You do need to approach this one with sensitivity and caution. I've got some major restrictions in one hip that make the "full" version nearly impossible, but it's worth doing for that very reason. I respect the messages my knees give me when I do this, and adapt it so all the tweaking is in the hips or the ankles.
