Goals and Strategies

Post by Bram » Fri Feb 26, 2016 12:40 am

Curious what approaches people here are taking towards their goals.

Current Goal - be a better surfer, in all aspects

Strategies:

A) prioritizing - reducing my other activities (the gym, mainly) to a level that doesn't interfere
B) drilling
C) video recording and analysis
D) good self-care - sleep, nutrition, etc.
E) cross training - especially when I can't surf
F) keep it fun - using different boards, going to different spots, being friendly

Whether it's squatting or whatever, how are you approaching things?

Can you elaborate?

Do you mean an ordered list of best to to worst practices? Philosophical basis for pursuing goals? SWOT analysis for practical next steps?

EDIT:

I'm not pissing in you cornflakes, I really don;t fully grok the question. I can't tell if you goals setting and pursuit conceptually or practically.

Any strategy you're employing to accomplish your goal.

But if you want to add complexity to the question (ordering them, discussing goal setting, etc.) by all means go ahead.

I see your edit, no offense taken.

1. Surf a lot.

That's all you need, no?

There are as many different ways to set goals as there is to reach them.

It's just problem solving and project management.

Depends on the individual.

Most pro surfers agree that video footage of yourself is immensely valuable.

And most pro surf coaches agree that the two largest issues (even at the higher levels) are how quickly you can correctly get your foot placement and how you do one particular type of turn.

Just surfing a lot doesn't guarantee any of those things, but deliberate practice and reviewing video footage can help.

I know what I actually do is very different from what I or most people would say you should do.

First pick a good goal and don't lie. I want to surf good is a way to articulate a goal but it's pretty Inexact. I'm betting. I think if it were me, I would say " I want to have the feeling of mastery doing X.

When that was motocross I said, "I want to win "

When the goal was mountain biking it was "earn a pro card"

When it was Highland games the goal was, "Look like you know what you're doing and meet people. "

In old fucker powerlifting it's ,"Have a respectable squat and total elite in the open. "

These all demand radically different approaches. You grok?

So...after picking the right goal and articulating it correctly, things get bone simple.

If Micky wants to be the best moutainbiker he can, it's dead easy.

Go Race.
Find the fastest people there
Train with them.
Chaos ensues. Run with it.

There are other ways to do it, all of them will fail to achieve the same level as the above.

Now if Mickey wants to enjoy mountain biking, this too is dead simple.

Do It.
All the time.
When it stops being fun. Quit.

The biggest mistake people consistently make is saying they want to get good at X and yet fuckin refuse to expose themselves to people that are better, faster stronger, smarter. I'm really not picking on you Bram but no amount of video analysis (which totally has its place) will fix being a pussy...which is what most people are. I'm not sayiong you are..you seem to know what you want and have a clue of how to get there on your own.

BUT I've trained with literally hundreds and hundreds of people who were good, some even great (gold medal great, multi time world champion great) at their pursuit. And without fail these people break into two camps. The great ones who will do what is necessary and everyone else. Everyone else are the dudes with all kinds of ideas about how good they were relative others or how close to their goal of being an X or Y. All sorts of training splits and plans and projections and recovery modalities. And still when offered a chance to get schooled by someone better, they chumped the fuck out.

Short answer: Want to achieve a goal? Go work with people who have been there. Not one fucking thing substitutes for this. Full Stop.

BD has it right, again.

Training partners are everything, regardless of sport or game.

If you find yourself at the head of your pack, with everybody looking to you for the answers, you're stuck in stagnation.

You want to keep moving until you're one of the little guys. Being in charge and getting people better is fun, but it gets you nowhere.

Also: you have to have ways to measure progress, objectively.

Placing in a race, time to complete an event, weight lifted. Etc.

I've found thousands of ways to wiggle my way around fuzzy goals I've set for myself. When I say, "I want to pull 650" and I currently pull 550, I know exactly where I am in relation to my goal. If I drop to 525 in the next few months, what I'm doing isn't working. If I move up to 575, it is.

Fuzzy goals don't let you do this.

I agree completely. And I like your varied goals.

My goal is actually "I want X to happen" - due to surfing better.

I don't know if you remember, but I shared that I had private goals at the start of the year? One is related to surfing, but the only way it's happening is if I'm universally a better surfer. And I have to demonstrate that skill at a particular local surf break. But I do have a very clear goal in mind, going to check out the other replies.

I do know some good surfers, even great ones. I'll start asking for their feedback and working on what they tell me. Good call.

If I could be agreed upon by good surfers that I had good style when surfing that would get me a lot closer to my goal.

Thank you guys for your feedback, seriously as vague as that is (good style), it's something tangible I can move towards.

Most of the time, those folks are the most generous in person. Just hanging out, watching them (mirror neurons, yo) shooting the shit. In motosports it's called "bench racing." 90% of what I learned about motorcycle racing I got from lsitening to myu Dad and his buddies after the race. Took years to put it in practice but that super zen high level knowledge will settle into your cerebellum.

Okay, here's my goal:

Score more pussy.

So, following the most salient point of this thread, I guess I need to hang out with guys who score a lot of pussy? Maybe video it as well?

Goal: improve 3 lift total

Strategies:

stick to the plan ('modified' 531)
listen to my body
don't cut calories even though bathing suit season is almost here (!!)
pwn favgs online

Edit:

Now that I said it, I realize this is the first time I've ever NOT combined that goal with "build muscle" ...and it seems to be working for once.
