My Granddaddy's Words of Wisdom

Post by Hagbard » Fri May 27, 2005 3:02 pm

Due to the often dramatic complexities of southern families, I did not know my mother's father until the last few years of his life.

My grandfather was a self-made man, who fathered many children (most illegitimate) and had at least two confirmed girlfriends in their early twenties when he died in his eighties (his live-in gf poisoned him). When my dad and uncle cleaned out his caddy they found pictures, notes, panties, etc. He had a full head of hair and more lead in his pencil than any three young men you'd meet today, and I hope I received a fraction of those great genes.

He was not much of a talker, spent most of his time working, but he did ask me and all my male relatives one question every time we saw him, without fail:

"Boy, you get any pussy last night? You make any money?"

Pussy and Money.

Pussy and Money.

I think we can all learn a lot from his laser-like focus.

Right on. Hell with enlightenment.

I think the writer James Baldwin wrote.

"Money was exactly like sex. When you didnt have it, nothing else mattered.
Once you had it, it didnt matter at all".

I always puzzled over that last sentence.
