The science behind this is the physics you learned in high school - force = mass x acceleration. Moving the same weight at twice the speed requires twice the force. Another great benefit of CA is that you can get a very similar training effect with lighter weights and spare your joints and connective tissues the trauma associated with going max all the time.
Be careful if you use CA, especially with bench presses. You have to put the brakes on before the bar leaves your hands. I've seen it happen and it ain't pretty.
